JailBreaking - A true revelation.

Hi all,

This is the way i always thought about jailbreaking: "I'll only ever do it if it will enable me to unlock my phone. It can't possibly give me that many options and new ways to use my phone". How wrong I was!

It's unbelievable what the guys at the dev team and all other developer of JB apps are up to all over the world and what kind of functions they add to this phone which I thought was great already even before jailbreaking it!

Started off easy by installing the video recorder, don't think i'll use it much but hey, why not have it? Then yellowsn0w was finally released and it worked for me pretty much straight away, no need to mess about. Only after that I started to realize what a vast amount of apps are available on Cydia...

so now i've changed the way my dock looks (and it now has 5 apps on it), changed my lockedscreen to notify me of calls and new mail without needing to unlock the phone, installed backgrounder which finally lets me run apps (like nimbuzz - i use skype for IMing mainly) in the background which works really well so far, installed a VNC server (Veency) which lets me control my iPhone from my macbook and finally and most importantly, unlocked my iphone so i can use any cheap sim card when i'm away from my home network.

Great stuff, it's really been a revelation so far. it's like discovering the iPhone over and over again.

It vibrates, same as it would if you were in the app. I've turned sounds off but I'm guessing the sounds would be played too when you get a new IM.

Ah yes... It's so revoluntionry. Mhm, longer booting times, taking several seconds for apps to load, freezing up, f***ing your phone up, lagging you, having to force turn off every few days, crashing your apps, causing you to loose precious files... Ah yes, how revolutionary!

None of that has happened to me yet, so I won't worry about it for now. It does sound like something that would happen if you clog have your phone with a lot of useless stuff though?

Edit: I'm guessing it would most certainly happen if you keep too many apps running in the background so I'm sticking to one at the time. we'll see how i get on with that...

I have way too many issues with Vista and Ubuntu is way more stable. But, I used to use Vista but I went back to XP.

None of that has happened to me yet, so I won't worry about it for now. It does sound like something that would happen if you clog have your phone with a lot of useless stuff though?

I don't have many JB apps. I haven't clogged it up, just a few apps. I haven't stuffed it with custom things or themes.

How stable is the latest release?

I know it is still technically a beta build. I'm really interested in JailBreaking, but haven't much of a clue about it, I'll need to do my research.

It seems reasonably stable to me - but other peoples milage seems to vary (as you can see in this post).

I was much in the same situation as you are, thinking about it but i've always been somewhat afraid it'd be similar to an evil linux-horror distribution in terms of usability. turns out that's not the case at all, it's more like a competition to the official app store.

all you need to do is download quickpwn and follow the few very simple steps it tells you to do and you're good to go.

if you don't like it you can always restore to a backup.

I oppose Jailbreaking because at my school, people modify a certain file in iTunes and the iDevice to get cracked or pirated apps. And then they complain about how their iDevice sucks because they improperly jailbroke it. I did jailbreak my iPod touch for a little bit. Couldn't stand waiting minutes for cydia to load or Winterboard. It was laggy and some themes looked hideous.

How themes look is subjective. You picked 'ugly' ones. That's not the 'fault' of jailbreaking, that's simply bad taste.

If you're not a fan of jailbreaking, fine, but at least post facts instead of what you posted in this thread.

So, to summarize: I picked ugly themes and therefore oppose jailbreaking. I think there's a simpler solution: don't pick hideous themes.

laggy-ness with the iphone has nothing to do with jailbreaking..I've realized the only thing that slows down my phone was using a custom keyboard..nothing else slows down my phone or causes it to crash, besides for badly written apps, or the usual safari crashes..Cydia has slowed down for me though, it now takes about 10-15 seconds for Cydia to start and begin downloading packages or whatever it does while it starts up

Okay, been reading up on how 10.5.6 disables DFU mode.

I tried doing this but the Automator file loads, quits all open applications then just quits itself.

I'm downloading the 10.5.6 combo update, but I can't get this Automator sequence to work. Any ideas?

no idea mate, did you see the big thread about this? Might be helpful to have a look around there if you haven't already.

Try using a PC to do the Jailbreak (gets around the DFU issue)

Please forgive me for a second here if this seems like a rant. The OP has posted perfectly legitimate reasons for why he likes what he has now that his iPhone is jailbroken. I actually liked reading your comments because more often than not people only complain on forums. Then lo and behold someone comes along and complains. Wow, now there's a surprise.

The solution is simple, if you don't like your jailbroken iPhone then simply restore it and forget about it. It's simple enough to restore.

I on the other hand am thankful for so many free apps and ways to configure my jailbroken iPhone. Like the OP it has been like having a new toy to play with since being jailbroken

I had mine loaded with themes and then restored it back to factory settings and noticed a significant difference, but I believe this is due to the themes and not the jailbreaking itself. I now have rejailbroken it and only installed some apps I am going to use and it is running as fast as it was when it was stock.
