what is the big deal about people jailbreaking? are you that whiny about the phone that you cant just be happy with it? "noooo, i cant have a custom text message tone". maybe someone can give me a good enough reason to hack my phone, void the warranty, and potentially destroy my phone

u want a good enough reason to jailbreak. How bout this? Since, I jailbroke my iPhone is like my computer. I install some thangs that allowed me to download many type of files on the internet through safari. Access my iPhone as if it was a flash drive. Edit documents and sending them back to my email. I have download rar files, mp4 videos, even flash you tube videos and converted them to mp3 file all on my iphone to send back to my computer and sync wit my itunes. Best of all, free apps. In today's economy, we have money to spend on better things, but still some apps should be payed for cus of the updates. Oh yeah, I barely touch my macbook pro noawadays

It's getting harder and harder to jailbreak. 3GS jailbreakers are waiting... and waiting... and waiting forever for a broken 3.1 to be released.

I have. but i have only come up with what that one guy said, and I don't think those are legit reasons. I was hoping for some new or less known advantages

If you damage your iPhone, Apple won’t fix it. Some of my friends have damaged their jailed iPhones and gotten full replacements! This is not a possibility for someone with a jailbroken iPhone. Apple will just say, “The reason it’s not working is because you hacked it.” Hacking your iPhone is not sanctioned by Apple, so whatever you do is at your own risk.

A majority of the iPhone apps on installer are absolute pointless. Also, people make a lot of apps just to prove the point that it is possible, but actually do nothing helpful for the user. I have two examples. I downloaded this one apps called cowbell… You tap on it and it makes a cowbell noise, this is self explanatory. There is also an app that lets your record videos, but only 5 seconds long. Then, the only way to get it onto your computer it to SSH into your iPhone. Trust me there are a lot more apps that do nothing helpful than apps that cool or help you get things done.

You love your iPhone and it already does everything you want it to. You just have to live for 4 months, knowing it can do so much more. It’s a great iPod, a great phone and a great internet communicator. Why should you jeopardize that?

I have a 3gs, jailbreak is not hard. Iphones can't git brick, I mean I don't know bout 3gs since it's pretty new. But there really is no risk because ur not really messing with the boot. Also, it's good for the times ur comfortbaly in bed browinsing on ur iphone for new music to dl. I wouldn't want to git up to get my macbook pro, n besides I want to conserve battery life on that for when I have to really type essays. But jailbreaking has allowed me to do business real well, since I jailbroken it like 2 months ago, I have actually edited 10 + word documents and emailed them to teachers and business people. Dude, just jailbreak ur ****, iuf u don't like it, just simply restore it, no need to be ocd about wiping ur system clean before jailbreak, or any rituals. Just jailbreak or restore

MY main reason, iblacklist, its a lifesaver. plus i did not want to pay for a new iphone just for video recording. cycorder and video recorder 3g are good enough for me. plus there is a hack to edit video just like the 3gs. plus i have found a hack to delete single recent calls without clearing them all. <---which should have been standard anyways. plus redlaser...ok not that one, but i find it kinda cool

but with all that said, i hate arguments that can easily be settled. it matters on what your needs are, some people were dying to have copy/paste, others wanted mms, some people just love the fact they can mod their phones to their likeness. why bash each other over what they like to do with their own phone?

I have j/b all of my iPhones and haven't had any problems. The reason I unlocked my 3gs was to get 3gunrestrictor since I don't have wifi. Also to customize it. Don't you think by this time apple would have that feature to customize your iPhone.

I jailbreak for:

• Software Unlocking
• Apps that Apple wouldn't approve that I think are good
• The ability to theme my phone
• The ability to have features not available to non-jailbreakers
• The ability to modify files directly on my phone (SSH)

Does it void the warranty, well yes and no. It does, until I reflash the phone with a normal approved Apple firmware that overwrites all files, therefore making jailbreaking undetactable to Apple

its undectable to Apple until it breaks your iPhone. that was why I started the thread, for a reason that would make it worth potentially ruining the phone

Not to pour cold water on jailbreaking, but I’d just like to mention it’s not exactly a bonanza of apps and functionality. Outside of Winterboard/Summerboard, there’s just not that much to it, IMHO. But I didn’t know any better, and so after several months of reading gushing praise for jailbreaking, I took the plunge. Sure, skinning your interface is fun and there are a couple of apps that are interesting, but it just not worth consistently restoring the device (which means basically reinstalling the OS and all of your apps), not being able to update when new updates dropped. Why would you jailbreak, when the 3.1 release is just months away! If you are serious about jailbreaking, I’d wait until after a 3.1 jailbreak.

As for me, it’s been there, done that. Given all that’s coming to the iDevice (from the 3.1 update to open sourcing of Wolfenstein, Quake and Doom), it just seems like there’s not much incentive for me. I really don’t want to see my iDevice stuck on the pineapple logo or visited by a Steve Jobs caricature speaking German.

Jailbreaking is all software. In case you didn't catch that, JAILBREAKING IS ALL SOFTWARE. It does not touch hardware. If the slightest thing goes wrong, all you have to do is restore in iTunes, and it's perfectly fine.
It also does not void your warranty. When you restore, it erases all traces of jailbreaking. Apple has no idea. If you bring it in jailbroken, yeah, they're going to void your warranty. But you're an idiot if you do that anyways. Apple tells you not to jailbreak so they can have control, not because they care about what it'll do to your device.

Jailbreaking allows video recording on the 3G, software unlocked, the ability to download files from Safari, theming, the ability to hide apps, the ability to have Stacks like OS X on your iPhone, the ability to reply to SMS's without leaving the app you're in, the ability to put App Store apps in the background and return to them, the ability to use wifi only apps from the App Store on 3G and EDGE, the ability to put icons in your status bar for unread things like SMS and voicemails, the ability to put five icons in your dock or have five rows or five columns of icons, the ability to download YouTube videos straight from the YouTube app, etc. Need I go on? Or is your argument already dead? I believe it is.

It sounds like you jailbroke and had a bad experience with it, and now you're trying to ruin it for everyone else. Just because you didn't know what in the world you were doing doesn't mean everyone else is just as clueless.

By the way, SummerBoard was back on 1.1.4, over a year ago. Jailbreaking also does not cause you to restore constantly.

why do all people who jailbreak get offended or mad when someone questions jailbreaking?

none of your reasons really sell it for me. i dont want to continually restore and reinstall the OS, and I dont want to chance not restoring it before I take it to AT&T or Apple. and having a software issue can still fry your phone; the hardware can't operate without the software

There is about a 99% chance you won't destroy your phone if you follow the simple instructions.

I'm too paranoid to risk it with that 1%

Being honest here, I felt the same way. Then one day I searched on here and google...and read discussions on how easy it was and the percent failure was so low I gave it a shot. I'm still glad I did.

If you decide to do it and need any help, there are tons of people here including myself that can answer your questions along the way. Go for it I say!
