Japanese Input Keyboards on iPhone 2.0

quick question,

Am I right in thinking that the new input method is the same (or very similar) to the one currently used in mobile phones in Japan, where you push the keys to cycle through the hiragana. for example あ　い　う　え　お　(usually on the '1abc' key) ?
And then there will be text prediction as you input them?

yeah, when i type "ha" and then "ro" in japanese on my japanese sony-ericsson phone, "HELLOWEEN", in english, is one of the top five results.

good to see that the iPhone's japanese dictionary is at least on par with sony-ericsson's!

i hope it produces "Wii" when i type "u" and "i", too.

now, my big question -- does the iPhone feature a number-pad input system for english? i've gotten SO used to it on my little phone here; i'd like to buy an iPhone, though a few half-hours of messing around with friends' iPod touches have, um, left me thinking my fingers are too thick, or something.

I am as white as they come but spent 7 years in Japan... I speak pretty good Japanese and wanting to know if there are any applications that will allow me to type in Japanese to send a SMS or an Email. Or do I have to wait for the 2.0 version to be released later next month?

It makes sense that they would implement a Chinese character recognition system before English.

English has 26 letters whereas Chinese has a few hundred. I suspect those who use Chinese will find it a great relief.

I would also love to have an iphone, or any phone that could type in Japanese and send to friends in Japan. I know that if an application exists, then one could email Japan. However, sms is not possible because of the different frequencies we use for cell phones. It will just go through looking like this, !#@%U&%*&y.

That's due to different character encoding, not different frequencies.

You can turn on the Japanese keyboard in your Keyboard Settings, and type in romanji from there - it will automatically bring up suggested kana/kanji for the romanji you type.

I can imagine that the lack of the iPhone being available in Japan may hinder development in regards to the functionality of the phone in Japanese. If it does become available, I'm sure more functionality and additional software will quickly become available.

wow thanks for that one. yeah i guess you skipped most of this thread where we argued how many ten of thousands of chinese characters there are.. what you called a few hundred. awesome.

so how is he input done anyway? it looks clunky, romaji to hiragana is usually way faster, don't you think?
