Why do we all assume Steve jobs made this choice. He was just the messanger who got shot quite a bit here. He may have been the one that decided but ios has been for 3 betas so it's not a guarded secret anymore. I am going to miss the feature though.

What's with all this universal bs. The mute switch on the iPhone is on the left side.

Great job Apple, way to piss off the iPad faithful.

He screwed us once again. I look for the day when Jobs is no longer in control of Apple.

And I dread the day Jobs is no longer in control if it means Apple start trying to please everyone because their devices will end up having 15 buttons; the devices would go back down to a meagre industry standard of 3-4 battery life because everyone demanded better specs; and no doubt, crashes and viruses from opening up the App Store to please everyone.

Jobs has a very specific view of the future and computer usability and, despite it pissing off a lot of people very often, he's been completely right for a decade, has got Apple where they are today, and has pushed the entire industry to change and improve which it otherwise probably would not have.

All the more reason to stay on 3.2.x forever. I even just downgraded my 3GS from 4.1 to 3.1.3 just because 4.x was garbage. I just really couldn't stand Apple's poor attempt at multitasking, so now I'm back to using Kirikae as my task switcher. It's so nice :)

The one thing I might miss out on in the iPad update is the wireless printing ability, but I honestly haven't even hooked my printer up to my computer since moving a month ago...

I just noticed my (half hour ago) comments have been removed. No profanities, just my opinion. Seems to me as though macrumors.com bow to Jobs and also don't allow individual expression! Shame on you!

No need to go back down to 3.x to get rid of Apple's multitasking, I have my Touch on the latest -- is it 4.1? These version numbers are getting difficult to remember! Anyway, I have backgrounder set to not background any app other than the ones I set up with backgrounder exceptions or those I background manually. Then I use SwitcherMod to set the multitasking tray to only show the apps that are actually running. Voila, backgrounding as it was meant to be!

However, my iPad will stay on 3.2 until there is a jailbreak for 4.2, and someone releases a jailbreak mod to let me use that switch for lock orientation. I'm not living without my lock orientation switch!

I am not updating until there is a jailbreak either. I just got an iPod and it is driving me nuts doing it on screen. I absolutely hate it to the point that I think I would rather have 3. whatever I have on it now with no multitasking or folders and an orientation lock switch than 4.2 with multitasking and folders and no orientation lock switch. I know I'm being a big baby but it makes me mad to the point that I kind of want to sell my iPad now. Not because it is any less useful but because I'm pissed and hate apple.

Well, just jailbreak your iPod! As I said in my previous post, you can "fix" the multitasking, and I just remembered, I installed SBSettings on my iPod, and a toggle that locks rotation. And this locks the rotation in both portrait and landscape, unlike Apple's orientation lock, which only locks in portrait on the iPhone/iPod.

When you begin to use the iPad with AirPlay, that mute switch will make all the sense in the world. When you use AirPlay, iPad transmits all sounds from the device: keyboard clicks, lock sounds. Mute switch kills all sounds but music. If it were still an orientation lock, you'd have no way of NOT hearing those sounds over your media. Volume rockers lower ALL volume.

Then it's kind of counter-intuitive to call it the mute switch. Since it's called a mute switch, I'd expect it to mute all sounds, including music, when I flick it.

if the switch will be a mute switch then it will take only a few weeks till developers have a orientation lock in their apps if it is indeed needed. some already have.

so it's not a big issue and if you use your iPad for skype or facetime then a mute switch will come in very handy.

They could keep the orientation lock and add a mute button to where the new orientation will be in 4.2. But I guess when steve says no, it's a no

I for one want the mute switch. There are many instances where I want to easily switch off the sound without turning on the iPad then unlocking it before I can even mute it. I've gotten used to locking the orientation on my iPhone so no issues there.

I'm happy to hear that. The mute switch is so much better than an orientation lock. If I need to lock orient - i just double tap home button swipe left and hit button - done.
