Which is the consensus. iPhone 4S sales floored because iPhone 5 was just around the corner, which made other smart phone sales seem greater.

This is not rocket science.

I'd to see real numbers though, like how many were sold per carrier, which is far more telling. If Samsung sold 5000 units, and Apple sold 4,800 units, the headlines become far less sensational.

id like to see it month by month. like how many units did the 4S sell in october? how many units did the GS3 sell in June? now how close were they in august? I bet that would paint the picture right there.

I'm sorry, but this must be some of the ********* journalism I've ever read.

Are we talking about TOTAL UNITS SOLD, or UNITS SOLD IN AUGUST?

By the published chart (which, by the way, BGR is no official source in my book, more of a rumor site than anything, and their "channel check" isn't credible either), Apple topped Samsung in even JULY! Is is just me, or didn't the GS III come out in June/July? One would think that the old 4S SHOULD have been trumped even by the GS III in July! But it wasn't ...

OBVIOUSLY people are going to hold back on their iPhone purchase in August when everyone knows the release cycle is Summer -> Fall. In addition, the GS III is brand new! OBVIOUSLY, people are more inclined to buy it.

Point being, this SHOULD be the case. Who cares ...

The increased sales volume of the Galaxy S III is very significant, and cannot be denied.

Why?

There's well over 50 other Android phones that count & take away "Android" sales from the SGS III when that category is reported.

To those who use the excuse "the one year old" iPhone 4S, haven't a clue.

Facts are the US market was the last to get the SGS III, the actual release date was just 23 days after the release of iPhone 4S. Therefore they're the same age.

In _no way_ am I advocating for Android or Samsung. I'm an Apple loyalist & shareholder of over twenty years. Yet if Apple exaggerates or fails to live up to what I _know_ they're capable of, I don't hesitate to speak out.

Just like when I'm asked for a laptop suggestion I always point people to Apple. I've converted loads of PC users to Macs. It's the best their is.

Sorry but you don't have a clue what you're talking about. The GS3 was released first on May 29, 2012 in Europe--nearly 8 months after the 4s.

UPDATE: Looks like intervenient beat me to the punch.

In lieu of something positive to contribute, you thought you'd pump up your ego by proving someone wrong. Feel better?

"I trusted Apple for years. Especially when Wozniak was still there"

...You know...about 10 years before he claimed to be an Apple loyalist... Never mind that Woz hadn't been actively involved with Apple since 1983...

So you can chastise
those who use the excuse "the one year old" iPhone 4S, haven't a clue.
but when you get called on it, the very 'fact' that is the basis of your argument, you find the criticism unfair?

Read the post, the comment on release date was not the basis.

Unfair? Those are your words. I live in the real world. Nothing is fair. :)

Just wondering what the stats would be if they included world wide sales - and sales from brick & motar stores like best-buy, then of course eBay etc.?

I don't think this is the big question that the GS3 is the best selling phone this month.
The real question is who was the people buying them.
If this was all vertical upgrades from other Android phones no big deal but if a bunch of people that bought the GS3 came over from the iPhone camp is the question.
Because now they are locked into a 2 year contract and won't buy the newest iPhone and that changes everything for Apple and how they will have to address the upgrade cycle.

I don't think it will be a huge factor considering the sheer number of people more than happy to pay for an iPhone outright.

However, as I speculated awhile ago, the great GS3 sell off started today. There was a huge jump in used galaxy S3 for sale ads on my local online classifieds in the last 24 hours. Prices are now as low as $350, which was unheard of just a few days ago when prices were rock solid at $450 on average.

No doubt there are people looking to buy their way back into an iPhone by selling their GS3 now that the dalliance has lost its luster.

Samsung isn't stupid. You don't stand directly in front of a heavy hitter.

Samsung launched the GS2 a month before iPhone 4S in the USA and got annihilated.

There is a reason they cut the USA lifecycle of the GS2 down to about 7 months; they wanted to launch the GS3 without iPhone 5 wrecking the party.

A month to a limelight is what Samsung will get at best. I'll call it now and say Apple will sell more iPhone 5's in one month than Samsung has sold GS3's ever.

Care to put your money where your mouth is? You lose and you give every single person on this board $5. Let's see just how confident you are that Apple will sell 15 to 20 million iphone 5's in 30 days (something they have never done. Not even close.) good luck with that tough guy.

And as I expected when the S3 came out, sales of iphone 4s skyrocketed in my local paper. They sell between $300 and $400, if you are lucky, and this is in California, not some little town in Kansas. Obviously, the local population of one tiny spot of the country is indicative of global sales, right? You iFaithful crack me up.

I was one of them. Got sick of the crap Apple was spoon feeding everyone. But, I will also be purchasing a new iphone for my wife. So, even though I can't stand the phone and put my money into Samsung, I still will be giving money to Apple.

Quick question? Why do we as consumers care which phone is the top selling smartphone on the market? If you own an iPhone or GS3, why do you care that everybody else owns the same phone as you? Unless you're a shareholder, it shouldn't matter.

I don't know about most of you but I prefer exclusivity, which is another reason that drove me towards the HTC One X. Only one US carrier, which means not everybody is going to have the same phone as me. I look around at work and all I see are GS3's and iPhones. I like that my phone is one of a kind.

Yeah, this is stupid and means nothing. iPhone sales always drop before a new model launches.

That is silly logic. If iPhone sales always drop before the new model launches and an Android phone has never outsold the iPhone mono a mono then clearly doing so is a significant even. Not the same as outselling it in general but still significant.

So I sold my iPhone 4S last month on the 21st, thought i'd use a GS3 till the new iPhone is released.. I just can't do it anymore going back to a 3GS until the new release of the new iPhone. I can at least say i have tried both worlds. But iOS is much more fluent and less glitchy. :apple: Best of luck to everyone who made the jump.

It's pointless to compare market share between the two vendors because their approaches are vastly different.

Samsung makes maybe hundreds of different smartphones and market share is divided between them all. Apple makes only several phones (one per year) so their market share will mostly be concentrated onto the most recent models.

If Samsung only made one phone per year, or Apple made hundreds, then the comparison would be more fair.

So did I but I got the HTC One X instead the GS3.
Well actually I started with the GNote but that one did not work.

I also kept my upgrade path for the iPhone 5 should I be surprised but we are still seeing the same leaks and that phone will not do it for me.

Sorry Apple but not this time.

Sure some people will do that and that will go both ways but the majority of people do buy on contract especially in this economy that we are having.
