wipe the drive, unplug everything except factory mouse and keyboard and see what happens. also make sure it's not too hot in the room you're in. overheating Macs do what you're describing.

alternatively, make an appointment at the genius bar if you have one
On the m1 Macs, wiping the boot drive is not a good idea!! The M1 systems will NOT boot from external devices for security.

Any chance you could record your screen to show how slow things are on your computer? You can do that with Quicktime Player (File -> New Screen Recording)
I remember that by default mouse pointer speed is quite slow so that's one thing you can tweak.

The whole point in buying a brand new pre-build, particularly one from Apple, is that you'll not have these issues.
The best advice so far, are the suggestions to have Apple provide a solution or replace the device. :D

Your new computer is fine. It doesn't need to be erased, reinstalled, or anything else. Try this -- close Safari and then click its icon in the Dock to start it. How many icon "bounces" until the app opens? My M1 Mac Mini opens in less than one bounce; older Mac's with HDD's take up to a half-dozen "bounces". Maybe as a new user your expectations are too high?

This ought to not make a critical difference (as performance on it should still be decent), but the 7 GPU Core version of the M1 is clocked at 2.5GHz versus the 3.2GHz of the M1 in all other M1 Macs (including both 7 and 8 GPU core versions of the MacBook Air). Similarly, the cooling in the 7 GPU core version of the M1 iMac is reduced (there is only one fan and it's not connected to a heat pipe connected to the SoC's heatsink, compared to a second fan connected to a heat pipe connected to the heatsink on the 8 GPU core model of iMac). Seeing as the thermal envelope of the 7 GPU core M1 iMac is, in theory, larger than that of the M1 MacBook Air, I'm disinclined to believe that this ought to make a difference (especially given the reduced clock speed on the 7 GPU core iMac versus the 7 GPU core MacBook Air).

At only 10 lbs. a trip to an Apple Store might be the best/easiest course of action, if only to bring peace of mind. Have the Genius Bar crew give it a going over. There *could* be a hardware problem, in which case a repair or replacement is needed. If it's a software or install issue they can sort it out right there and return a perfectly functioning iMac.

No, it is not. They all have a maximum clock of 3.2Ghz

I can't believe all the people that have bought into the idea that you need to bring your Mac into the Apple Store for every little thing. Where's the fun in that? Maybe one of the ideas posted here works, and the OP then has a sense of accomplishment instead of being dependent on Apple to always be there to wipe their ... brow. And if nothing works, then there's Apple to rescue them from whatever sticky situation they get themselves into by following our advice.

YES! But the first thing that OP needs to do is give us a few screenshots or a screen recording of OP’s activity monitor.

Without that and with us having ZERO idea what’s happening on OP’s activity monitor during the slowdowns, this thread is like the blind leading the blind—or a shoot first, aim later mentality.
(No offense to people who are blind or visually impaired)

The Macrumors crowd is definitely a little bit nuts, and all about the drama.😘😘😘😘😘

I just bought a brand new M1 Imac from the Apple website and things are loading slowly. It doesn't matter what website I go to or what app I load, it loads slowly. I also noticed right when I first turned it on for the first time that my mouse was moving very slowly. Even when I went into settings to turn it up to the fastest speed, it's still much slower than I think it should be. I thought at first that maybe these issues were bc of my internet connection but I don't have this problem on my HP laptop or my iPhone which are all connected to the same internet. This is my first Apple computer so I'm not really sure where to start with finding out what the issue may be.
Same with me. I'm not computer savvy, but just set up my new (Yay!) iMac a couple of days ago and now pages are taking forever to load and the computer is BRAND NEW! So frustrating. Responses here would be helpful if I knew what half of the terms were/meant. Also have set Chrome to be my default browser four times and that has yet to work.

Check activity monitor, see if there's anything taking a high percentage of your CPU. If so, might want to let that task finish or kill it.

Also, I'd recommend using a wire for your internet connectivity. It will alleviate a bunch of potential issues with wireless, and make this problem easier to track down. If your desk or working area contains a lot of metal, it might make it hard for the signal to reach the iMac.

There should not be any issue with your machine being able to draw the mouse movements on the screen, so like @rpmurray mentioned above, check for wireless interference, or try debugging with a wired mouse temporarily
Thank you, Kevcube. Where do you find the 'activity monitor'? Will it tell me which 'task' is interfering with the Mac's performance? The problem I'm having with slow loading (and just now, mouse responsiveness) didn't occur during the first two days of using the computer.

I have no clue why the cursor movement would be slow, but regarding web page and app loading: 1) try running the Ookla Speed Test on your iMac and then on another device in the same location. See if your download speeds are similar. 2) If the apps you are referring to are designed to run on Intel they will need Rosetta on your iMac. They will run fine, but the first time you load them, they can take upwards of 10 full seconds to start up. Subsequent loading should be faster. Hope this helps.
Ohh, do you need Rosetta for loading Internet pages too?

The broad description you give is rather suggestive of an active process keeping the system busy. On new systems during setup there are several things going on in the background that could cause this kind of problem if they fail to complete and close.

First thing I would do is open Activity Monitor (in Applications>Utilities) and then click on the '%CPU' heading, to get a list of what's running on your system, in order in which they are actively using the CPU. This would at least tell you what is actively running, and give some opportunity to see what may be causing the system to stall - priority CPU tasks can cause widespread slowdowns.
Thank you, za9ra22:. There is no %CPU option under Utilities. What do you suggest?

Launch Safari browser check https://www.speedtest.net and see what connectivity is like. Likely you have several things that are being updated from the internet initially. For example it ships with 11.3, but it would try to update to 11.4 MacOS. You should have nothing else connected except the wired cable to power supply port or connected to your WiFi when starting. Just use the bluetooth keyboard and mouse. The mouse being slow would usually be akin of a lot of processor activity unless for some reason the optical mouse is having a issue with your surface it being moved on.
Thank you. Just clicked on your link above and it took 24 seconds to load!!

Followed instructions and it took me to Tudum where I had to provide credit card info to access the speed test and where the free trial (to get you to Ookla in the first place) is only 5 days (a bit sneaky)! After signing up, you have to search for the speed test. I got the results below which mean nothing to me, do not indicate what has to be fixed nor how to fix it. Grrr.

Have your issues been resolved? Could it be that you have some iCloud syncing going on? In Spotlight indexing? You can check this via CMD+Space combination and then begin typing to see if there's a message about indexing

You DEFINITELY don’t need to give anyone your credit card info, check your card in the next few days for charges. Maybe you clicked on some ad

Do you have an Asus router? They don’t know play nice with Apple sometimes

Just go to an apple store to get help

Looks like your browsers are full of bad extensions, better get these removed first. Never give your credit card info to an ad. I'm sorry but I think the internet on a computer is not for you, an iPad seems a safer solution

I had the same feeling, maybe better return the iMac and get an iPad with keyboard
