The point is Apple chose the $99 price point because more people are likely to impulse buy a $99 device than a $299 device, and at the time Apple were pushing a rental only business model so internal storage wasn't needed.

Granted you are correct, however had they made a $199.99 and $299.99 model that offered lets say 64GB & 128GB SSD or even 160GB iPod Classic sized drive in it, it would have been a proper upgrade for ATV1 owners

I don't believe Apple will ever return to internal storage in that sense, since most of what they've done the past years point to the opposite. iCloud, internet recovery, iTunes match and so on...

I really wanted to get Ubuntu on my ATV1 but for the life of me I couldnt find any way to do it ! It looked as though you either had to have a PC running windows or be running Linux - am I wrong ?
I'd hoped the would be some way to clone an image onto the ATV1 hard drive using OSX ....

thanks very much for the link :)
Is that the same thing as Crystalbuntu (stmlabs)?
... if not, does the ATVcloner linux also enable the crystalHD card ?
Perhaps you could tell me if there is a specific place (forum?) where I can find more info and perhaps a "how to" or FAQ ?

Its much like sam's hack. But it uses atvcloner.app to reformat your atv's hard drive.

instructions are on the site. I am pretty close to a new image which has xbmc Eden on it (they are now on release candidate 2) and a new fantastic version of the quartz skin which is *very* atv like in nature so its familiar.

... and yes it works phenomenal with the chd chip, I have three running. True 1080p decrypted blu ray playback is not a problem.

I personally prefer the ATV 1, and you know why? Cause it has iTunes Extras, the MAIN POINT of selling movies on iTunes store, in my opinion. I ended up buying the 2nd gen, due to airplay and i was afraid that it would lag with hd video, so yeah.. but having in mind that my TV only goes up to 720p, the ATV 1 would really be the best choice for me, since i value A LOT those iTunes extras and iTunes LPs.. :/
