I needed a laptop and at the end of the transaction I spent 4000. I bought that
Apple M1 Max with 10-core CPU, 32-core GPU, 16-core Neural Engine
64GB unified memory
2TB SSD storage

How good is this machine. I wanna make sure I did good before I open it.
Not sure if this post is a joke or not...but you bought literally one of the fastest computers ever made. If I were you I would get the upgraded M1 Pro with the cores 10, 14, 16. and then get 32 GB memory and either a 1 or 2 TB hard drive because you can always by a cheaper SSD.

I bought the same machine two weeks ago. I use it as a desktop. Dead silent. Fast. Quad 4K external displays. I'm really happy with it. I also bought a D-Link DUB-E250 USB-C 2.5 gigabit ethernet adapter, Anker-USB C adapter with 4 USB 3.0 ports, Magic keyboard with Touch ID, and a Plugable USB4/Thunderbolt4 Hub. Everything works perfectly. Great choice.

Congratulations on your new purchase. It is certainly very good, it will serve you many years. Back in January 2016, I purchased a MacBook Pro 2015 model for my daughter to use for university studies. It was 8GB RAM and 256GB SSD. After 7 years, she has graduated, she never needed a new computer and today I sold the laptop for 20% of what I purchased it. I think this is is good example of longevity and 7 years after I still recovered 1/5th of the cost.

Is it a good computer? Yes, it is one of the best.

The question that should have been asked is "Is the the right computer for my needs?" For that probably not. As others have said it is overkill for such a usage scenario.

That said, I did pretty much the same thing, bought a maxed out MBP-14 with an M1Max, 64GB of RAM and a 4TB SSD. My usage is similar to yours but I wanted to provide extra headroom for future needs.

I own the 14" MBP in my signature (32C M1 Max similar to what you bought but with less RAM/storage)

It is easily the best laptop I've ever owned, and, for everything other than gaming, probably one of (if not) the best laptops ever made. You made the right choice going for the MacBook Pro 14". The people who are telling you "an M1 MBA would be more than enough for years to come" aren't necessarily wrong, but having used that machine for over a year, I can tell you that even for basic tasks the MBP just feels way better/faster, and the extra CPU/GPU/RAM will serve you well for years to come.
Basic tasks feel faster on the MBP than the M1 MBA? Basic tasks probably aren't even operating on the performance cores, and you shouldn't be seeing a difference. I think you're enjoying the placebo effect.

I always try to enjoy the placebo effect. In this case, while using my M1 MBP.

So, basically, you bought the fastest and best laptop Apple makes, the fastest laptop of that size and one of the fastest laptops in general - and you're asking how good is it?

Well, it really depends. For example, if you want to play a lot of games, it's not the best option ? If you dislike macOS, same.

Let me put it this way - if you like Macs you'll most likely find it amazing. If you generally like laptops, you'll probably find it amazing. If you really prefer Windows laptops, you might find it amazing.

That's it ?
