If you upgrade the HD be careful about your choice. I put a 7200rpm in mine and am having heat problems now

Yeah I was concerned about that. I am glad you told me, I was looking to stick with a 5400rpm drive. I like durability more than performance. What hard drive did you put in your Mac Mini?

What do you mean with heat problems? Two days ago i ordered a Seagate ST9200420AS 200 GB/7200 rpm/16 MB/SATA drive, to replace my 80 GB drive...

I would like to know, where do you have your mini, does it have enough place for breathing etc. (you know, the free place around the mini, etc.)?

How to you deal with the heat problem?

Because before i did geat into the upgrade, i did read this:
http://www.gearlive.com/index.php/news/article/how_back_up_upgrade_the_mac_mini_hard_drive_05101143/

Oh and most 7200 RPM drives make less heat then 5400 RPM drives, i’ve had a 7200RPM 160 gig drive in my mac mini for a year… now i replaced it with a 7200RPM 320 gig drive that crates less heat then the old one…

Also is your Mini a Intel or G4, I think the G4 ran hotter because they have a dedicated graphics card, where the Intels just have integrated.

Also Seagate drives usually* run cool, at least all the ones that I have owned in the past have.

A 1.5 GHz intel mini for $200. Wow like you I would jump on that in a second.

As far as a faster drive generating heat, I went with an external drive connected by firewire and left the stock 80GB drive alone.

Yeah I have a 500gb connected to ti now, thinking about upping that to 1Tb or 1.5TB, I have a ton of video so it would be used.

The mini sitting on top of an external makes a nice little stack with pretty good performance an storage.

I had really hoped for an updated mini earlier this year. But gave up and snagged a great deal on an iMac. But I still love having the mini.

Have you done any upgrades to your Mac Mini?

The only internal upgrade was upgrading it to 2GB of RAM the same day I got the mini.

For external storage I have a ministack with a 500 GB drive.

I was looking at getting a Ministack, how do you like it? Would you recommend it to other Mac Mini owners?

Thanks

The price was a little more then some other external enclosures. But I really did like the fact that if provides more USB ports. In addition a plus for the integrated look.

The biggest negative in my opinion is the plastic top didn't fit back real close. However the mini sits on top so that doesn't really show.

Where did you order your Ministack from?

The ministack was from OWC.

I found the 500 GB drive locally. One of those $99 after rebate specials.

Solo Core Mini

I have never had a Mac before but we just bought our son a new iMac and he gave me his Mini. He hasn't had it that long a guy owed him money and couldn't pay so he gave him this Solo Core Mini. It's got 2 GB memory in it but I'm intrigued by the idea of getting a dual core on ebay can anyone give me pointers.;)

I did the upgrade myself, and I found it challenging, and I have built and customized computers and macs for nearly 10 years. You really need to know what you are doing or else you can destroy your mini.

that's really a steal for 200$. I remember I got a mini 1.63 for my ex last year, slightly used, 350$~. Thought it was a steal. She destroyed it the second week she got it by spilling liquid on it...
