xp thumbnail view

oh one more thing. i used to love having the thumbnail view in XP, where you can see all your jpgs from within the folder. at first i couldnt see how to do this in OSX, but i found out how -

open the folder with your jpgs in, then choose view>show view options (cmd+j). then simply check the show icon preview box and your away! you can choose weather to make that the default for any folder or just the one you are looking at.

another thing i absolutely love is expose. F9 shows you all your open windows, F10 shows you the windows for a certain program, F11 shows you your desktop. think of using F9 where you would click on another program in the start menu of XP.

hope my suggestions made sense, i tried to explain them as best i could. but chances are if you just follow the instructions it becomes second nature! if you need any more tips feel free to pm me or write a thread here. the people are very friendly.

i found a great resource for people like us who have used PCs all their lives and now moved to OSX - https://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?p=1285350#post1285350

have a look at that if you want to find where stuff like control panel, add/remove programs, etc is in OSX.

have fun!

lol, no offense, but what is it with Windows users an MSN Messenger? Haven't you guys encountered AIM before?

Also, twoodcc, a very nice chat client that can handle ALL networks (MSN, AIM, ICQ, and more) on in a single program is Adium. I recommend it over MSN messenger 8,000 times over.

thanks pulse for the suggestions. i noticed at www.download.com, most of the software didn't come with an uninstaller, but i guess i don't need one? just just drag it to the trash? that's nice

yeah i do use AIM, and msn messenger. i might try adium or whatever, since i lost msn messenger.

btw, could i connect to the internet with my mac using msn dial-up? i probably will never do it, but just curious.

another question i have is : will i be able to upgrade to tiger when it comes out? for free?

Sorry, but I reckon you'll have to pay for Tiger. As for MSN dial up, it should be fine. I know Microsoft is closing down MSN for Mac (there's a whole other thread on this) but I'm pretty sure that won't affect their dial up services. I could be wrong though.

According to recent news, Microsoft will discontinue their msn dial-up software for the Mac. You should still be able to connect to the internet using msn dial-up, but you will not get any of the extra msn dial-up software, whatever that this.

Dragging an application to the trash is all that is required to uninstall it. However, that will usually leave a small preference file in your Library/Preferences folder. Remove it too if you like to keep things tidy, but it's usually not necessary, as these files are tiny.

If closing a window, using the red X or ctrl-w quits the application or not is entirely up to the application. Usually, applications that can have several windows/documents open do not quit even if you close all the windows. Applications that have only one window and don't have any function without the window will usually quit if you close the window.

To quit applications easily, try the shortcut ctrl-q, you might find that you like the consistency of keyboard short cuts between application.

i was livid when i found that out by accidentally deleting a folder containing my presentation files, 3 minutes before my presentation!
...which brings up another important point: always back up your work if you can't afford to lose it. This is good advice on any computer, but it's particularly important when using a new OS that you're not familiar with. The latest versions of OS X have a "zip" compressor built-in. You can use it to make make archives of files and folders. Not only will it collect things into a single file, but it can drastically reduce the size of the content, depending on the kind of data you're archiving. I like to make incremental zip archives of my work whenever I make some important changes, which I number, something like My Project nn, where "nn" is a number lik 06 that I keep incrementing. That way I can always go back to any version.

Making zip archives in OS X is easy. Simply select a file or folder, or multiple files and/or folders in a Finder view. Contiguous selections can be made using the shift key when clicking on the second item, non-contiguous selections can be made by holding down the command ("cloverleaf") key while clicking on items. Then select the "Create Archive of ..." menu item from the File menu. OS X will gather and compress all the files you had selected into a single archive file, called Archive.zip by default. Then rename it. To decompress (restore) an archive, simply move it to the folder you want the contents extracted in and double-click on it.

There are other ways to make backups, such as .sit (Stuffit) archives or simply holding down the Option key while you drag on a file or folder to make a copy of it, but however you do it, you should be backing up your data, and you should be backing up to external media (CD, DVD, flash drive, external hard disk, .Mac iDisk) for really important stuff to guard against disk failure (rare, but it does happen).

If you're new to OS X, I would highly recommend buying one of the many excellent books on learning OS X. There are many of them now, and many very reasonably-priced ones. This will give you a more comprehensive view of how things work in OS X, show you all kinds of shortcuts and tips and tricks that it might take you years to discover by yourself, help you avoid mistakes and disasters, and give you a reference for when things do go wrong. Just do a search on Amazon.com and read the reviews. Good luck!

MSN comes as standard with Windows. Most people have hotmail accounts, and so MSN is the easiest thing to use. I dont know anyone here in the UK that uses AIM, I used it a few years back as most of my friends in the US seemed to like it.

Probably the most important thing you can ever be taught. Students regularly come up to me at work with a floppy disk and an upset expression, asking if i can salvage work from their corrupted floppy. Makes me feel bad telling them they should at least save it on 2 floppies - like rubbing salt in their wound!

is there any widget-like things i can put on my mac? like that shows my computer's uptime and stuff? just curious. it seems i have seen others with some. and if so, how easy is it to put it on here? like could i just download one someone else has already made or something?

thanks for the info on the msn stuff, i'll look into it.

also, i bought the apple wired keyboard to go with my mini, but it seems i can't use the 2 usb ports on the keyboard b/c i don't have enough power or something. is there anything i can do about this?

Not sure about your keyboard problem, but for widgets you just download Konfabulator. Also, as you may know, the next release of OS X (Tiger) will have widgets built-in to the system via Dashboard.

thanks. can i download already made widgets for konfabulator? or do i make to make it myself?

i didn't know that about tiger. i've heard that if tiger comes out within 30 days of my purchase, i could upgrade to it for free. but i didn't buy direct from apple, so would this still apply to me, if it even exists?

thanks

ok well i got the widgets working. thanks

but i couldn't get adium working right. i have an AIM account (the free one, not the real AOL account) but i can't sign in with adium.

well my mini has slowed down a little. is there anything i need to do to keep it clean and running fast?

Verify/Repair Permissions using Disk Utility never hurts, and you can always defrag your system sing a command like sudo periodic daily weekly monthly from Terminal. There are some good free programs out there as well for maintenance, like MacJanitor. Just check out VersionTracker for a wide variety of programs.

And of course, you can always restart to see if that fixes the problem - is there something specific that seems to slow down? Provide some more info if you can...

i have an icon on my desktop labeled "folders" which contains subfolders that i access VERY frequently, like all my school and work files and some other things that i don't really know where to classify. The only thing that i've had to install in a year almost has been MS office, and it created the icons in the Apps folder for me. Everything else i just drag to the apps folder (which i have on my dock for easy access) from the mounted image. It is really an easy process. I really recommend Adium X (you can google it for the site) because it is much like the windows client Trilian... it handles AIM, .Mac, and MSN. I really like it, but it does take some getting used to. Enjoy your mac...

well i have itunes, ichat, safari, and some widgets going all at the same time. safari seems kinda slow. but i thought a mac could easily handle this, and it did at first.

you ought to just get rid of that Konfabulator... i had it at one time, but when the 14 day trial ran out there was NO way i was paying for that. It wasn't even that great of a program and I'm sure that Dashboard will be better since its part of 10.4.

well i do like Konfabulator, but i'm not going to pay for it. i didn't know i only had a 14-day trial. oh well. i guess i'll have to get rid of it then

In Canada, Western part at least, I don't know of any PC or Mac users that use AIM. I'm pretty sure that's just American. Everyone here uses msn, the mac users use ichat as well. I've never even heard of adium before.

Adium isn't an IM network. It's a useful cross-IM app that allows you to connect to MSN, Yahoo and AIM rather than having various different Messenger apps open.
