They ended up giving me a refund for my upgrade to a 1 TB fusion drive. Not a new computer but not bad, very kind customer service. She sounded willing to ask for an exchange until she found out I had gotten rid of most of the original packaging, and said it would be a no-go. $170 richer at least

That's not bad. I have none of the original packaging either and I was clear with customer service. He said no worries, just tell the courier when he calls you'll need a box and just give everything to them.

Sorry to hear that - and you are absolutely justified to feel a bit shortchanged and to reflect on it. I am not sure to what degree you push the limits of the hardware, but I want to be completely honest and say that if I didn't use my iMac primarily for large and demanding video editing jobs, I don't know if I'd have the energy to go through swapping out for the new model. In general I don't like to buy a big refresh in the first month or two of production either since there always seems to be a few glitches that affect a percentage of users. I guess what I'm saying is if you purchased it for hardcore tasks like 4K video editing or 3-D modeling, then that is a reason to feel some substantial disappointment. However if your new iMac is a joy to use and handling the tasks you require with ease, then I hope that once you're able to work out a bit of disappointment, you can get back to sitting down in front of that beautiful screen and enjoying it just as you did before they made this announcement - be this under any other circumstance in my case I know I would. Good luck with this and I hope you can continue to enjoy your new iMac!

Yeah, I mean if Apple had said, no, sorry, we can't give you a refund, I wouldn't have been overly upset at all. I just tried it to see if they could and when they said yes, I agreed, I mean why not. I know it's a hassle, I have to do a wipe of the system and be there when the courier calls etc and then order the new system. And I'm not a demanding user, it's web browsing, sports and netflix viewing, emails etc. But I figure I'll have this computer for 5 years and I may as well start off with the latest stuff rather than 2 year old components. Especially as it won't cost me a penny, just a bit of inconvenience.

Well, I cancelled the refund!

I just thought....why bother? I'm a light user who watches Netflix, listens to music and browses the web. No games, photo/video editing etc. The 2TB fusion is more than enough and after spending a while transferring old data to this to the point where my iMac is now running perfectly it really is not worth the hassle of upgrading

Having to arrange time off work to be there for the courier, waiting for the refund, ordering again, waiting a week or so and then arranging more time off work to be at home for delivery. No thanks!!

Yes one thing - time is money! And another thing you can have is piece of mind. I really don't like to by a revamped product early in the first run. There is always a higher chance for a problem to arise. The 5K 27" iMac is no exception on the last "big" update. In 2014 the 5K model had a thermal issue where the machine heats up causing fans to run at high speeds. Fast forward to the 2015 update and guess what? Apple "fixed" the problem with updated models of the GPU. Enjoy your iMac! I'll keep you posted on my situation. I did order the new model while my fully loaded 27" late 2015 5K sits here in the sealed box. If there are any early issues reported of lesser performance in FCP X OR thermal issues with the new ones with the new Radeon 580 Pro GPU - I'll seriously consider staying with the machine that's already here.

DISCLAIMER: For others who might read this response and say "I'm crazy" about the new higher spec'd GPU being slower in Final Cut Pro X than the older M395X GPU - my thinking is that historically hardware can have amazing capabilities on paper, but when it comes to real world tasks there is always a chance for a surprise either in a good way or a bad way. GPU's are very complex and sometimes a new model can fall short in a specific area. I need the fastest rendering I can get for 4K video editing - not interested in the VR stuff which was a primary goal for the new GPU. Anyway enough techie talk already! Waiting patiently for real world benchmarks on the new card!!!!
