Hi, just got my new iPad 16gb 3g today and loving it. Any things i should know that are a must for the iPad? (such as must have apps, settings)?

Cheers

Matt

Congrats and welcome... Definitely give thumbs up to the Apple Case, best there is and it doesn't increase the size of what you're holding.

Some fav apps:
Angry Bird
Scrabble
Tweetings (tried twitter, went back)
WSJ (worth the subscription)
First Look (very good alarm clock, weather and news. Also can wake up to internet radio stations)
Socials (better then Friendly for accessing Facebook)
YourVersionHD
Wikihood
Yahoo Sportacular HD
Flipboard (more I use, more I like)
Docs to Go Premium
Boomberg
AmazingHD (wallpapers)

FYI: I only use iPad only apps, much better in all facets and don't cause drag when backing up via iTunes.

Enjoy and when you start reading about all the new tabs hitting the market with more hardware etc... don't fall into what you got isn't good anymore. Form factor and how the apps etc work with the device is key and besides, all these new tabs hitting the market with one OS (android) will first have to fight amongst themselves to determine whom will be the one to attempt a formidable challenge to the iPad.

Hi,

Dont worry i wont jump ship lol

I dont think any of them will knock the ipad off top spot as apple have a whole infastructure now such as the appstore, mobile me that works.

Actually im buying a new computer next week.... Apple iMac 27" and ditching windows for good.

Matt :D

Congratulations!
I'm loving my iPad!

Here's a few of my fav apps (sorry if they've already mentioned)

Flipboard, perfect magazine like. In a lot of ways feels a lot nicer than a real magazine.
Twitter App, brilliantly designed.
Apple Pages, for document editing/creating.
Air Video, brilliant for streaming video over your network, good whilst on the couch or in bed.
FileBrowser, almost perfect, it lets you browse your network, just like you would from a computer, see all your shared folders etc, even copy files.
Transfer, for sending photos/videos from your iPhone (if you've got one) over your network instead of buying the adaptor, plugging it in, emailing etc.
And USA today, nice news reader. :)

Wow! Second congrats in order... I remember 3+ years ago when I did similar, went Apple all the way and haven't looked back.

Don't bother with a screen protector - spoils the experience - a cleaning cloth from a pair of glasses will get the fingerprints off in 0.5 seconds :)

But definitely the Apple case :)

Could you expound on what you mean by, "spoils the experience". I use the Powers Support Anti-Glare, smooth install and it looks really good (zero bubbles), hard to tell screen protector being used. Haven't loss a bit of sensitivity, but have loss good percentage of glare.

Go sky watch planetarium is great, and is featured on the latest iPad advert. Ever wondered what that star is or what constellations you can see? I have the free version and it is great.

I have the Power Support Antiglare too, and I agree with you. I notice little tradeoff but appreciate the less glare a lot. I think the key is the quality of the screen protector. Power Support and SGP are very good and do not "spoil the experience," but others do. On my iPhone, I hated the cheap protector I had on it before I switched to Power Support on it.

Air video is nice, but right now it can only do just that...video. If you want to stream your music too, you should look into either Zumocast or Plex.

Other apps I consider must have would be:

ABC Player - Great for catching up on TV shows and works better then their desktop client by far. This is now my preferred way to watch shows over the internet.

Flixster - Awesome little app for looking up movie showtimes.

IMDb - Even more awesome app to look up everything about movies...actors, movie trailers, even showtimes if it's playing somewhere.

Flipboard - Way awesome way to catch up on only the subjects you are interested in. I use this app each and every day.

Epicurious If you cook at all, this app is amazing.

The Weather Channel Love this app. Looks great and works great too.

Marble Mixer - Great game that really shows off the unique abilities of an iPad with it's four-player-on-a screen gameplay. So damn addicting.

Appshopper - Another app I use everyday. I've gotten a large number of apps for free this way that I might have had to pay for or miss altogether. Highly recommended.

Soundhound - Want to know what that song you just heard was? Run this app, let it listen for a bit and it will most likely be able to tell you.

Spark Radio Lite - AWESOME streaming radio app. With a fantastic visualizer. Great just for listening to or demoing what an iPad can do.

Yeah I think Apple case is a must.

Some people prefer screen protectors, I dont necessarily think it spoils the experience. But if you get the Apple case, you probably wont need the protector. I have had mine in a case and my screen is in perfect condition

To be honest my experience may be limited - the only screen protector I've used is the InvisibleShield, on my iPhone, for about a year - but I find it hard to believe any effective protector could give the same feel as the 'naked' glass, which is what I meant by 'spoiling the experience'. I would dearly love to be proved wrong!

I've had my iPad since early August and I am loving it also.
Many of the apps mentioned here i did not have, but wow I am being impressed more everyday!

I bought FlightControl also, but I bought the iphone version as it's cheaper and looked the same on AppStore. Plus I'll be getting my iPhone 4 in like 10 days.
Does anyone have the iPad version, if so what are the difference between the two?

For getting work done, I'd suggest:

EverNote - sync's with free web-based cloud service, your iPhone, and desktop versions. Really great way to capture websites, and notes on your iPad.

Pages - It works with MobileMe (paid), but also iWorks.com (1GB Free!) to create, edit, share, and save stuff to the cloud. If you have iWorks on your Mac, this is awesome.

Numbers - same as Pages, but with spreadsheets. I use it all the time for work. I even use it for gaming to share rankings, stats, and raid lists, etc. LOL (I'm a total geek.)

GoodReader - best PDF app out there, cheap, and has a huge number of ways of grabbing PDFs, including just browsing to the doc on a website and hitting download.

Twitter, Facebook, and Wordpress all have great apps for social media on the iPad. Skype works too, in case you have a Skype account.

The iPad is a really awesome computer. It's like someone chipped off a piece of the future and handed it to me. I expect to hear the "2001: A Space Odyssey" music every time I pick it up.

There are definitely some apps to check out, here are the apps I couldn't go without:

-Pages (I use this a lot for writing essays for school, it is especially good if you have a keyboard dock)

-Remote (Apples remote app for controlling iTunes and the new apple TV, I use it very often to control my iTunes in my room since my computer is hooked up to my Bose speakers in here.)

-Netflix (If you already have a Netflix account thats great, but even if you don't already, it's not a bad thing to get, its only $9 a month and there is so much streaming content)

-Friendly (This is just a Facebook app, since Facebook doesn't have an official one for the iPad, there are many out there, but I really like this one)

-Popular Mechanics, Popular Science, and Wired (These are all just magazine apps, I dont know if you personally would want them, but I enjoy reading those magazines, especially on my iPad with all the added content)

-Star Walk (A fun app to pull out and show your friends, look at the stars and know what they are, or search for a formation and find it, just something fun to have when your outside at night)

-Flixster (The movie app I look on to find a movie to go see, I can check local theater times, watch previews, look at ratings, and buy tickets right from my iPad)

Games:

-Fieldrunners (In my opinion the best tower defense game, it is very addicting and i spend a lot of time playing it, and its great having it on the bigger screen rather then on the iPhone.)

-Valet Hero (Parking cars into designated spots as they come in, its a fun game that isn't that hard, but fun to play and it is entertaining enough to be worth the money)

-Angry Birds (I think this is on every iOS owner's must have app list, a great game to play when you have any free time, very addicting and very fun)

-RealRacingHD (This is an amazing racing game, I honestly don't play it that often, and for the price its a little hard to justify for how little I play it, but if you will play it enough, it is a great designed app)

-Flight Control (A fun app to pick up and play, but it has limited functionality, and honestly if you already have the iPhone version, you can get away with that, its not a huge benefit getting the iPad version in my opinion)

I hope that this helped with some apps to start out with, if you have anymore apps your looking for PM me or something and id be glad to help.
