Glad to hear you are hapy with your mbp. Mine is due to arrive on Monday - can't wait! I was waiting for the merom revision but I needed it for uni on the 17th so I bit the bullet and went for it!

Don't worry about it your MBP will be super :) And Steve don't listen to those negative comments. To those who were making them way to rain on his parade geez nice one.

all i need to make sure of is that a slipstreamed disc is sufficient for bootcamp instead of a genuwine disk

haha, all the people who posted about merom-based macbook pros, I'll i can say is I hope it makes you feel better. keep on waiting, sorry but i've had more advanced technology then you for about 5 months, and will for at least another month. So, are you saying, that my computer will be replaced in 6 months? Oh my goodness! I thought computers only got replaced every few years... haha. And by the way, 64-bit wont REALLY matter until Leopard. By then most of us will be upgrading anyway. Think about this, we haven't made fun of your PowerPc computer for the last 6 months to a year, so stop making fun of us! If you keep on waiting, you'll never truly experience apple hard ware. If you waited almost a year, you should just wait until Santa Rose right? Or how about even longer?

I liked jaydub's post. :D congrats on the new MBP, you should have no regrets! I would like to see pictures as well ASAP!

Viccles - I'd like to see pictures of yours too!

i also didnt like safari very much is there any difference between that and firefox? is macs firefox and different than its pc counter part which i LOVE.

Of course, there is a difference between safari and ff. FF has much more in the way of add ons, extensions, etc. as you know. FF is a pain though (I say this using FF right now!). It tends to freeze up if it's been on a while. It will also start to gobble up RAM. I use FF for the main reason that it has the best RSS reader of any browser. I've heard FF is better on PC's. My limited experience with FF on windows would back this up. You might also check out Camino and, when it's past the beta phase, Shiira. Shiira is f*%#ing fast...

I really need MS Office for school but I will wait for the UB or a huge price cut. I also intend on streaming videos and music from my pc would quicktime be sufficient? i intend on playing. avi file(what should i convert them to?)

Depending on the urgency, you might want to use iWork until MSO is binary. You can type in pages and export to word. Pages will read word docs. With a student discount, iWork is $50.

If you are having trouble with any video files in QT (make sure you download flip4mac), then VLC player or Mplayer OSX should deal with it.
You should also make sure to load up on common codecs - divx etc... Anyway, the $30 you pay for a full version of QT is a steal. It is really an awesome app.

And even then when all the procs are 64bit it won't really matter anyway. Apple has to carry on supporting the older platforms and the regular user really isn't going to be able to tell the diff all that well. I know of the benefits later on, but for the meantime, this is a load of marketing huey!

i downloaded flip4mac and i must say it sucks. it tried to use that in conjunction with switch to convert a wma album into aac but it didnt work even after i downloaded the only flip4mac plugin available.....

To install flip4mac you have to go to applications>utilities>secondary click installer>get info>run in rosetta>then install flip4mac as it is not a universal binary yet.

Flip4Mac WMV IS a Universal Binary as of Version 2.1.0.33 (the current version). So there is not need to make quicktime and safari run in Rosetta. As a side note, it works decently on my Macbook Pro.

hey steve.....i am one among the many waiting for the merom MBPs (and i don't mind waiting) and gonna become a mac convert soon.....could you point us to the threads which u read to get acclimatised to ur new mac and the things you did to install boot camp and other applications......it would be really useful if you could write an article about ur experiences with ur new mac, the difficulties you faced and how u overcame them....it would be a good read for the new mac owners.

cheers on ur new mbp!
