when u did a restore from time capsule, was it a backup of ur MBP? did u just tell osx on the new i5 to restore from that backup?

Well, I like to start fresh and clean with a new Mac. So I didn't restore the whole computer from a TC backup. I set up the iMac as new and then just accessed the folders in my latest TC backup of the MBPro and pulled off everything I wanted - iTunes Library, iPhoto Library, Documents, Addressbook contacts, etc.

That way, I wasn't pulling over unwanted .plist files and all the other stuff that accumulated on the MBP over the past ~2 years. Cleanest way.

Very savvy.

My i5 quad arrives by August 10th (Canada) and I'm looking for ways to cleanly transfer files off my PC (*gag*). My iTunes folder has junk in it from 3 different PC transfers, I have 10 years worth of digital photos, various short videos of my kids and a smattering of office documents to move. I've been lurking this site daily/hourly since December and have relied on its members for opinion and guidance.

Finally pulled the trigger (with a trackpad out of curiosity) and am quite pumped to switch from PC.

You're going to love it! My first Mac was the black MacBook back in 2006 and I have been an Apple cult member ever since. Going from a crap PC to a 27" iMac is going to be awesome for you. And yes, I'd say the Magic Trackpad is well worth the $69. Great build quality, super easy to pair with Bluetooth and really fun to use over the mouse.

New iMac

Hey guys, mine just arrived today - well, I missed Fedex when they came so I went and picked it up. Man I thought my old Samsung screen was big - THIS is BIG. This is my second Apple machine - my first is a late 2008 Macbook Pro, which I still have.

This is the iMac i7 Quad Core with an SSD and 1TB drive. Gonna put in another 8GB of RAM (from a cheaper 3rd party retailer). Can't wait for Time Machine to finish transferring! Woot!

So far no yellow tinting or other problems...! (Fingers crossed)

Nice man. Believe, me the screen won't appear as BIG in a week once you get used to seeing it on your desk;)

Also, what's the big attraction to SSD's? You pay way more for less space for what? Just to say it's less likely to fail? I'd rather have a 1TB hard drive with a Time Capsule for my backups (I know you have the 1TB drive on board as well - referring to those who opt for just the SSD).

Ordered my i5 27" iMac yesterday

So after much debate between models I ordered a quad core i5 27" iMac last night from MacMall.com. It is to ship tomorrow. It will be replacing a six year old Gateway Pentium machine that has a 15" LCD flatpanel monitor. After getting my wife a Mac Book Pro in June - I can't wait to go all Mac in our house. Next comes the iPhone and iPad.

Slowly but surely switching to Apple.

Welcome to the Cult.:p

Congrats!

You just can't beat 27" of love. :D

I've had the magic trackpad for almost a week now, I don't even reach for the magic mouse anymore.

Same here, i got an 27" i5 Quad and 13" MacBook Pro, my sons got a MacBook, we also have six iPods between us (I have five kids:eek::mad::eek::mad:).

Only my eldest daughter has a crappy Acer, which is an especially crap PC;).

I also am amazed at the size of the 27" iMac, I mean I've seen it in shops, but when u actually get it home it seems to double in size. I'll never buy a PC again.

"Out for Delivery"

UPS has my iMac "Out for Delivery" Just another hour and I head home. I keep hoping the wife will call to say it has arrived....but not yet.

As another person said, definitely the speed. If everything else is so fast already, the bottleneck really is in the HD. With all my apps on the SSD, everything loads SUPER quick. I actually sit down and turn this baby on now as opposed to before, when I used to turn on my MBP and walk away to do something else while it boots up for example. Adobe Photoshop CS4 loads in 2 seconds.

And you're right! This screen doesn't seem that huge anymore lol. I don't now how I used to use a screen that was smaller! Definitely makes you a screen snob :OP

Hey All - For those debating whether or not to get the new 27" iMac...GET IT! Just bought the quad-core i5 iMac from the Apple Store here in the Boston area tonight and I am completely in love:p

I upgraded from a late 2008 15" MacBook Pro (which was a great machine) and am really enjoying this GIANT 27" LED IPS display. Just moving all my files over from Time Capsule and haven't had a chance to push the Core i5 but I'm betting it's blazing fast!

Anyway, just wanted to share some initial thoughts and excitement with the MR community. Pic of my set up below. Let me know what you think!

PS - the Magic Trackpad is sweet as well:D

Thanks for sharing, very nice set up, keep us posted :)

Yea. After a few weeks with the 27", I feel like I could go for 32"...haha:p I don't know if I can ever own a laptop again unless I also shell out the dough for a Cinema Display.

It's great to be able to sit back in a chair and surf the web without having to lean in to get a better look at text and images.
