First impressions are good. It makes my 24" LED Cinema Display look pitiful (both size and resolution-wise). I noticed a speck of dust under the glass, which took literally 2 seconds to fix: suction cup the glass and blow the dust out with my compressed air. Didn't even need to turn the system off to do that either. Just did it on my desk. Easy.

Does my iMac have any yellow tinge?

Wait for it!

NO!!!!!

Hah, no I'm kidding. Yes it does. Very slight yellowing toward the bottom third of the screen. This falls in line with EVERY SINGLE LCD I'VE EVER OWNED!!! Seriously, people! Get over it! You're never going to find a screen without some form of color bleed. It's NOT possible with the current tech. Yes, I'm sure some screens are "better" than others, but really, panel variance is all that is. It's so funny watching people go mad about the tinge, when both my 24" LED Cinema Displays have a tinge, and they're from 2008! And guess what? My MacBook Pros have a tinge, too! And guess what? My old Dell 2407WFP had a tinge, too! And guess what? My Samsung 46" LCD TV has a tinge, too!

Anyway, SO FAR so good. Only had it on about half an hour - did my upgrade to 8GB by adding 2x 2GB Crucial sticks, and she fired right up. It hurt my fingers to get the RAM in. :D

Anyway, now I have to use this for a bit and then do the SSD upgrade.

Enjoy your iMacs, people! First impressions are just amazing with this puppy.

Why did you feel the urge to send yet another request to our godly macrumors server to create a thread, when there are about 50 BILLION of them already ?

The power of ARN compels you!

Congratulations. However, I've had 3 of these. The slight yellow at the bottom isn't so bad, but when 3/4 of the display makes white things looks dingy/yellow, something is wrong.

I'm glad you got one that doesn't do that. Enjoy it. They are really impressive machines besides the yellow.

grats,
I've got a five years old apple cinema display with no yellow tinge at all.
great thread.

It's frightening how many perfectly within-normal-tolerance computers must have been returned along with a few genuinely sub-par units, because of that "yellow" test that was planted here. The effects of that thread, combined with the promptings and goadings of a few anti-Apple moles throughout other threads, must be way beyond the instigators' dreams.
The same test (and resulting mass panic) could have been aimed at any model of consumer computer, anytime.

... except that the other 9 computers in my house pass the test and neither my first or second 27" i5 iMac's did.

First of all, My Samsung 46" LED LCD TV has no a yellow tinge at all.

Second, If whatever you said 's true, I need an Apple Hardware Engineer (or Steve Jobs) to come out and say that to the public like" This yellow issue cannot be fixed and no one is never going to find a screen without some form of color bleed. It's NOT possible with the current tech including ours. "

The question is that why Apple people still keep apologizing to the cutomers whenever they recieve the complaint of the Yellow issue? and Why they still keep doing the replacement to those suffering customers if they think this problem cannot be fixed with the current technology? Just one public speech would be enough to stop the replacement game with the customers.

I'm a software engineer and I have a lot of hardware engineer's friends. They all told me this problem can be fixed.

My 23" LG monitor doesn't have any backlight bleeding or anything, and I have seen it on fully black. If it does, it's like 1 mm down the bottom, but I'm not sure whether that is backlight bleeding or not.

muahahaha...

Fackers, seriously it's not as big as a deal as everyone makes it out to be I mean seriously guys swapping out their iMacs 3-4, more than 5 times and they still get the yellow tinge???

All of you fackers write a petition to Steve Jobs or something, all the whining and crying on these forums don't do jack, I'll be the first on the list to sign that petition if that fixes all the Yellow Tinged screens out there, though I doubt it.:D

Bravo! Absolutely outstanding thread. It's good to see someone with some common sense around here!

If you have 6000/7000 series Samsung, you may not have a tinge of any sort, but you definitely suffer from clouding/uneven backlight, most noticeable when there's a dark scene. I've NEVER seen a Samsung LED-lit TV without this issue, and I've seen a LOT of them.

In any case, I'm about to rip apart my iMac and install my SSD, I think. Wish me luck!

You must have had a very bad series of screens I am afraid.

Unless we are talking about different things (I am guessing we probably are).

I have a MBP and MB here, both passes the test (hello?). I have seen MBPs at BestBuy that fails the test, but the newer ones at the Apple Stores do pass the same test.

I just read this on the test thread,

Could you kindly explain this?

Uniform (left) vs Yellow-tinge (right)

And if this is "within spec" like you are saying, then why do some displays have a totally different yellowing pattern? Some are so bad that they almost entirely fill the screen? Some have a drastic difference half way, some are in a corner, and some have a vertical stripe?

Why are there so many Week 41 iMacs with a uniform display?

Even the 24" iMacs on my campus perfectly passes the test, though they are not LED lit. Is this an issue specific to LED lit screens?

There are many of us who have seen side by side comparisons of these iMacs where one has the yellowing, one without. Are you trying to tell them that they are just imagining things? Seriously?

If this had been an ongoing issue for Apple, then they better make sure they fix it now.

I have a Apple display at work, and judging from my parents 24" imac I'd call BS, and if you are suggesting all apple computer monitors have yellowing and we should just get over it then you are incorrect, there is no way in hell anyway should pay full price for a defective unit, maybe if they charged 3/4 price and acknowledged the problem. But that's besides the point, not all Apple monitors have yellow tinge.

Also I am on a 4 1/2 year old Asus laptop at the moment, no yellowing here.....

Outstanding? To suggest people should just shut up and put up with an inferior product that doesn't live up to its main selling point and hype?? Good one.
I sure as hell hope God doesn't return us given that a few people on here seem defective...

I refuse to argue with people who don't know how LCDs work.

Just got my OCZ Vertex installed (transplant from my MacBook Pro). Seems to work perfectly. Heck, don't even need to even reinstall the OS it seems! I was a little freaked out because my hard drive fan was running full pelt, but it seems my old SMC Fan Control was the cause of that. I just turned that off and rebooted, and we're back to 1099rpm on the hard drive fan.

Whew! Thought I'd not shorted that connector correctly.

Let me tell you, it was NOT fun taking this iMac apart. Lots of tricky connectors to unplug, and I had to have my wife help me undo them. .I was sweating ALL OVER the place.

But SSD speeds are TASTY! :D

I refuse to argue with people who don't know how LCDs work.
Me too. You clearly don't know anything about good lcd panels, since you only had bad ones... :)

My experience:
24" iMac alu: brown/yellow corners, gradient
17" Late 2006 iMac: no yellow tinge
13" Mid 2007 MacBook: no yellow tinge
17" LG L1740B: no yellow tinge
32" Philips lcd tv: no yellow tinge
15,4" Acer Aspire 5720G: no yellow tinge
15,1" Asus M6Va: no yellow tinge

You're never going to find a screen without some form of color bleed. It's NOT possible with the current tech.

Rubbish.
I have owned a 30", two 23" Alu, two 20" Alu and a 20" Acrylic ACDs and none of them exhibited non-uniform screens. They were identical from top to bottom and left to right.

My MacBook Pro also has a perfectly uniform screen in terms of colour, and so did the MacBook and PowerBook G4 before that.

My partner's iMac 24" and 20" from 2006 are also perfectly uniform screens with no flaws.

Every single Mac at work (20" G5 iMac, 15" iMac G4, eight 17" Acrylic ACDs, six 23" Alu ACDs, a pair of 30" ACDs and twelve Eizo CE210Ws are all perfect.

So yeah, don't tell me you can't get perfect screens. You can, but LG just can't seem to make many.

I count myself as one of the more restrained iMac 27" screen owners, I have a yellow hue on my display but I'm not going to enter into this cycle of returning multiple machines in the pursuit of getting one that doesn't have it. Rather, I've registered the issue with Applecare but chosen to take a position of holding off addressing it to see if Apple come up with a solution and/or repair policy. There's just no point in going back and forth with replacements until Apple either openly or covertly acknowledge that there is a problem for some users and address it.

For those of you who think this is all in the mind of individual and that it's within acceptable manufacturing tolerances then I would really have to take issue with this. From my observations the yellowing increases the longer you have the display active. For example I have only just switched the display on and the yellow hue is barely noticeable - I would go as far as saying almost within acceptable tolerances. HOWEVER, once I use the screen for any sustained durations, such as 40 minutes, then the yellow becomes far more prominent and way beyond the acceptable threshold. Having a 27" monitor which Apple claims "you’ll get a perfect picture with superb color consistency" is not much good when I'm limited to using the left hand side of it for Photoshop colour correction due to the right hand side being yellow.

I do emphasise, I am not some wingeing Mac Head seeking some 27" screen Nirvana and chasing some un-obtainable pure screen. I am a complete realist but one who recognises when something is within acceptable tolerances and when something is not.

I'm really bothered that I got called a fanboy. Oh well. Whatever.

There is NO question in my mind that this whole yellowing thing has been blown out of proportion. And for those that say their whatever-brand LCD is completely uniform, BS. BS. BS. There's no such thing. I've owned more LCDs than the average person, and I'm EXTREMELY picky. But I refuse to drive myself crazy over this sort of thing. Is my iMac flawless? Hell no! But am I a fanboy? NO WAY. Like I said in my first post, I found some dust under the glass even before I took it apart to install my SSD.

In any case, this yellowing is not something new and I GUARANTEE you Apple won't "fix it." Color casts on LCDs are something I've learned to deal with over the years. I suggest a lot of you get used to it, or quite simply - buy a different computer since an iMac clearly isn't for you.

For those that care, off the top of my head - products with a color cast of some sort:

1.) Nintendo DS/DSi - various DSs - some with green tints, some yellow.
2.) Sony PSP - green tinge to bottom of screen.
3.) 17" 2007 MacBook Pro. Slightly pinkish tint to the top left.
4.) Apple iPhone/3G/3GS - all my iPhones look different from my wife's iPhones.
5.) Dell 2407WFP. Non-uniform blacks.
6.) MANY Samsung LCD TVs with clouds/patchiness to the backlight - slight yellow tinge on a few of them.
7.) Apple Cinema Displays - slight pink tinge to my 23" ACD and slight yellowing on both of my 24" LED Cinema Displays.

Blah blah blah. You get the idea. :)

I would hazard a guess that you aren't that picky as you have owned several substandard screens without complaining.

If you went to Starbucks and got a coffee and they left out the coffee, would you complain???

Why then with a computer (much more expensive then a coffee) which major selling point IS its monitor do you expect people to be happy with less than what they are promised?

I manage a small pre-press outfit, all of our monitors are colour accurate and calibrated regularly and none of them exhibit colour irregularity, this is essential to my industry. So I'm still calling BS on your posts, also as it has been pointed out a lot of people have received great monitors with no discoloration, hell there is even photographic evidence on these forums if you bother to search a bit.

I'm sorry mate but this IS a very real issue for many people on here and a lot of people have it a lot worse than you do, so keep your childish "SHUT UP..." comments to yourself. If you are content with substandard then so be it. Some of us expect a bit of quality and consistency for our money.

Easy tiger, for someone so happy with their display you seem quite rattled by an issue that doesn't affect you.;)

See my previous post but to provide some context I work in high end Video Post Production and see plenty of flat screens ranging from low end screens right through to Grade 1 monitors costing in the region of £12000 - £18000. Unlike some posters I'm not expecting perfection from this 27" iMac screen, however I can categorically say this screen is not as it should be - something is amiss, possibly in the backlighting. In it's current state you could not use this machine at a prosumer level, and I would argue a home user is being short changed in accepting this yellow issue some screens seem to suffer.

It's frightening how many perfectly within-normal-tolerance computers must have been returned along with a few genuinely sub-par units, because of that "yellow" test that was planted here.

As you've no basis in fact for this assertion it seems you're frightened by your own imagination

Let me guess - the "genuinely sub-par units" would be the two you had replaced. The "perfectly within-normal-tolerance computers" would be everyone elses?
