Congratulations on your first mac! But you payed Apple for 4 gigs of ram, big mistake!

Ok.. i thought about this for a long while before ordering... problem is Apple provide 2GB ( 2 x 1GB sticks) as standard... if i was to get he memory myself... I can only remove 1Gb stick and replace it with a 2Gb stick... meaning DIY upgrade maxes out at 3Gb.... so I guess I thought it was worth the EXTRA £60 to have 4Gb (2 x 2Gb) ready installed for use on Day One since I know I will be using Windows Vista in Leopard using VMWare or something!!

**You can change both memory sticks for a total of 2x2GB

Trust me. Go and buy her something too :)
With my first Mac i bought my wife a iPod Nano. She was happy and never asked.

iMac - well... I bought her a iPhone :D

And with the Mac Pro and ACD I was told sure... AFTER you get me a Louis Vuitton bag (the small one thanks God!).
Well I needed the Pro so for 3 weeks I was eating tuna cans to get the $$ for that damn bag.

We're a happy family now :D

Find things around the house to sell - including any Windows computers.

Work over time or find a part time job. Convince her of the value of the iMac. It centralizes all your photos, tv shows, and home movies.

Last time I looked, a freakin' Emachine could centralize your photos, tv shows and home movies...

You payed way too much for that computer, and if I were her, I would be really pissed off.

Glad to hear all is well at home... BTW... did you just say you can change BOTH sticks??? I mean both??? I have tried researching this everywhere... and I keep hearing the system one is close to impossible to replace... apparantely you have to take off the screen or soemthing with special equipment and so on... and I haven't built a PC for a while...and I have NEVER had a mac before... so i thought it would be less hassle since I dont really have the time....

Yes. All iMacs - u can change both sticks:
iMac memory replacement

It's a bit different in alu as you are pulling the sticks out with a piece of (at least it looks like) plastic but idea is the same..

It so easy to change the ram, just pull the sticks out. Doesn't apple charge £120 for 4 gb of ram? For £70 you can get 2x2GB from crucial, sell the 2gb apple give standard, and probably end up getting 4GB of ram for £30 in total.

I would cancel your order, and do it the crucial.com way! That would also give you a chance to tell the wife!

I have re-ordered the same spec but with 2 Gig Ram but decided to invest in the bigger hardrive 500Gb >>>> 750Gb since i know this will be hard to upgrade in the future... Many thanks again... u saved me a load of money!!!

No worries mate, I was in the exact same position as you in December of last year :)

I still use my vaio, hoping for a nice design change soon.
I have two vaio's mate - one for me SZ2XP (Newish), one for the wife S2XP (3 yrs old), and a compaq tablet tc4400 for the teaching and my kids to play around with. Have to say the build quality on the Vaio and Keyboard are awesome! Just got the Imac to add to that lot now...

I'd be preparing for a coup d'etat once the iMac arrives!
You may well have a hard time keeping everyone off it!

A few questions...

1 - Do you have a full-time job that pays a decent salary?

2 - Do you have enough money after this purchase to manage household expenses?

3 - Are you over 21?:D

I'm a full time grad student with very tight budget constraints and I get 1 paycheck per year when I lead services for the Jewish Holidays. So when I decided that I needed to upgrade from my 933MHz G4 to a 2.8 iMac, I talked it over with my wife and I gave her a list of reasons for the purchase. I had planned to pay for the entire thing from my 1 paycheck. However, my lovely, generous wife would not allow me to do that. I ended up only using part of the paycheck for the purchase and my wife completely agrees that it was a great buy. Of course, the advantage I have is that I used to do Mac support for a living and am therefore the live in tech guy. My point is that if this purchase will not affect your ability to pay your bills and put food on the table, she should not have a problem with it.
Best of luck.

P.S. The RAM changing instructions that someone here linked to are not for the current iMac. It covers the early intel models that did have 1 GB soldered on the Mobo and maxed out at 3GBs. The correct link is... I have just been hunting for the correct link but can't seem to find it at the moment. However, be assured that with current iMacs, you can absolutely replace both memory sticks.

I went though the same thing with my wife...

Bought my MacBook Pro on impulse without telling her, bought my Mac Mini on impulse without telling her, and bought HER iBook G4 without telling her

I STILL haven't told her about the MacBook I just got cheap on eBay... i'll have to phase it into the house somehow because I can't think of any logical reason why I should have bought it in the first place

Oh well, she's due to give birth to our first child tomorrow so maybe she'll be confused and I can say it was always there :D

Other people collect art, puppets, warhammer minatures, we collect Mac computers, don't we. :)

So hard to resist, isn't it.

Apart from the fact that it looks beautiful and has no nasty wires (wives hate wires don't they!)

Tell her that she can now surf the web and use her credit card in the confidence that there will be no spyware/keyloggers taking a copy of her CC number and sending it across the net. Reports say that 25% of all PC's with spyware and AV s/w STILL have some form of malware - that's a very worrying thing for a husband to have to deal with!! ;)

Plus when she actually uses it for a few weeks and starts to do things that she simply couldn't before she'll realise it's pretty awesome. Also, make sure she's there for the 'welcome' video that runs on first boot up - that always impresses - makes her feel 'part of it' too..

It'll take a while before she realises that it IS different from a PC - her own personal user experience will make her realise it's a very smart move.

Don't forget the re-sale value and the fact that this little beauty will last years and still be worth hundreds more pounds when you come to sell it than a junky PC.

There really are a ton of genuinely valid reasons to have made a wise investment in a Mac than merely buying another crappy Vista PC - I think she'll realise that if she just gives it a chance...

Anyway, good luck and enjoy your new Mac - you ordered a great spec iMac...Your going to love it!

Love the answer, YOU were destined for greatness!
and to the new i-Mac owner congratulations! I LOVE MAC's:D;):apple::apple::apple:

Good God man; if she loves you doesn't she want you happy? I never understand these couples where someone has to beg to spend money he or she made. Macs last for ever any way.... Cowboy up and tell her after it arrives.... :D

To answer your questions, I definately have a job with more than adequate (well paid) salary being an Assistant Head of Mathematics at my school.... the problem my wife has with me is my inability to SAVE money since I generally spend almost all my excess income and live like a KING... she keeps saying that its about time I put some money aside (I am 32 now).. she right... but I have this kind of ..i dunno addiction to spending on gadgets/technology.. you might like to call it.... I just can't help it..

Tell her your having an early mid-life crisis and that it's much cheaper than a mistress - that would be the very last time she ever mentions 'the cost of the Mac' :)
