Hey fellow 'forummers' ,

I just ordered my first mac! Since I've seen heard and read so many good things about macs I decided to switch and thought if switching, why not good so I did it big time.
A few minutes ago I ordered a:
24'' 3,06GHz Imac
750GB HDD
Wireless mouse and keyboard.
I''l buy some additional crucial ram as well(4gb)

Let me know what you think of my decision and please don't hesitate to give me some tips to make it a great first mac experience.

I also wanted to make use of the opportunity to thank you all so much by all the great threads and messages you guys have written. I learned so much on these forums, I think I already know more about how to use a mac than the average user jut by you and youtubers!

Thanks!
~Sander~

Nice. ;) I just got a refurb of the same machine, except with a 500GB drive. I would have gone with 1TB, but you can't upgrade refurbs online. :(

Oh, and just for peace of mind you should know I've had no problems with my screen. :)

I spent 25 minutes with one last Saturday at the Apple Store in Tampa at the International Mall. I am still drooling. Opens apps in a millisecond, even MS Office For the Mac. as new BMB's as soon as they are released. The iMac is a Family Christmas Present.
I know you will be VERY happy with your new Computer;):D:D:D:D:apple::apple:

My wife and I just got an iMac as well. We love it so far no problem what so ever. ;) enjoy your iMac, you will love it!

I ordered a brand new iMac almost the same as yours about 3 days ago.

I won't lie, I'm terrified of the screen issues everyone's been moaning about.

Don't worry, people don't go out of their way to make posts about their screens when they're working correctly. :) There's plenty of us, we just don't have a reason to moan!

AW MAAAAN! MY SCREEN WORKS PERFECTLY!

I was just at Best Buy yesturday, those 24' iMac's are amazing! I don't understand how much screen real estate do you need. But hey, if I can afford it, I'd buy one. :D

^ yea, the posts saying it's bad and has problems are the defect units. i hate it when people say that about one product and say another product is better. but anyway, congratulations on that machine. the wireless KB and mighty mouse are really great compliments to that imac.

Well its usually luck of the draw. Hey, if any of you have an issue with your iMac, I'd be glad to take it out of your hands. :D

Remove all the extra languages and printer files. ie. Reinstall OS X.
Smcfancontrol
iStat Pro
Onyx

Hope that helps.

Thank you! I have a few questions though..
- Which sofware is the best for removing the extra languages etc.?
- Why reinstall OS X because it already is a clean install right?
- Is it necessary to use Smcfancontrtol since I feel hesitant to mess with the fan speeds because they're automatic and when you control them your self you always have to change it when your're going to do more intensive stuff, hope you understand what I mean:p..
- What exactly do you use Onyx for?
Again thanks!

'Monolingual' can be used to remove unwanted language files. You'll find it at Sourceforge. It's a useful utility.

Onyx can be used to enable some hidden Finder/Safari options and change the frequency of log rotation and other general system maintenance functions. It's a useful utility, but not essential.

SMCfancontrol should be installed at your own risk. I have an aluminium iMac and don't consider it necessary.

Thanks, so you don't recommend installing Smcfancontrol, and why the clean install of OSX?

Nothing listed so far are considered essential. But are nice suggestions. The Fan control I have used and to be honest... removed it as it really shouldnt be needed. I play Wow in windowed mode with itunes going and safari and temps seem to be controled fine automaticly.

Doing a clean reinstall probably won't be needed either unless you only have the tiger to leopard upgrade disc in the box. I would think any newer systems are preloaded with a full leopard install. My iMac had the Tiger to leopard upgrade disc so instead of that I just did a full leopard install.

My list of suggested add on apps would be;

Flip for mac
iGlasses
Mac da'ripper
Handbrake
Steer mouse

for starters. There are a few more but i am at work and can't remember them.

Thank you! Really appreciate it, it seems that Mactheripper and handbrake do quite the same thing but handbrake is somewhat better(more options) or am I wrong here, and what do you use steer mouse for because you can already change all setting in osx right?

I recently bought my iMac too. Mine seems to be getting a little warm. I have seen as high as 191 F when using handbrake. Is that normal?

One thing I forgot to mention is that you should probably run a software update (via the Apple menu) when your Mac arrives.

(I can't remember if this happens automatically or not on setting up a new machine)

Enjoy the new iMac. Your going to love it.

Snap&Drag and CandyBar are two apps i recommend looking at also depending on your needs.
