I'm sure you're not the only one who returned it. But looks like you're the only one who has the courage to admit it to that brainwashed herd.

I'm a new convert to Mac, having used PC laptops since they first came out (kind of giving away my age there). I'm retired, have a little disposable income (too old to chase hot but expensive chicks anymore) and decided to try out the MBA. Yeah, it's more expensive than some higher performing computers, but a BMW costs more a higher performing Dodge with more horsepower. Sure it's a toy to me, not being of the tech-geek persuasion, but it does meet all of my needs, being light-weight and extremely portable. In short, I'm very happy with it.

What I don't understand, after reading a lot of the posts on this forum, is why some individuals continually post their negative views, time after time after time, ad nauseum. I know, it's an open forum and people can say what they want, but it gets a little tiresome after awhile. The MBA is out, it has it's proponents and it has the folks that view it with disdain. But folks of the latter persuasion, please get over it. I don't know if it is an Apple thing or what, but I've never witnessed such petty banging and haranguing in my life. I use this forum to exchange ideas about my new computer, not to listen to a lot of incessant whining. But I guess you kind of lose patience as you get older, not wishing to waste a lot valuable time listening to whining from people that are not your kids.

Don't attend to offend anyone, but that's JMHO.

Mac users always bitch about the new Apple hardware. The iPhone sucks becuase it's only 8 gigs.. waaaaaaah.... The Air sucks because you can't hook up an ancient firewire device... waaaaaaaaaah...... It only has one usb port... waaaaaaaaaaaah...

We have Dell sub-notes at work. I have a TP X31 sub-note.

ALL LIGHT-NOTES AND SUB-NOTES GET REALLY, REALLY HOT.

They crammed all those tiny, tiny electronics in there and yet try to maintain the power and speed of a normal laptop. Tiny fans also.

I find this true when you have the unit plugged in, running at full speed.

If you want it to run "cooler" - you need to go into the control panel and shut off stuff you don't need (like networking, modems, etc.) and throttle down the CPU to minimum speed. Also keep it unplugged so the charging unit is not on.

Should run much cooler.

Sounds like the OP expected regular notebook features, instead of the ones that are inherent to this type of notebook.

What apps were you using to get it so hot? If you were just surfing it must be defective judging by everyone else's comments... The SSD should be even cooler!

C
I was doing light surfing last night on my desk and the rpm's on the fan were about 5500-6200 rpm's. It was also hot as hell. I have a 1.6/80GB

I once drove in a Lotus Elise sports car. It was incredibly difficult to get in/out of the car and had poor headroom.

It was also incredibly fun ride with amazing speed, handling and turning fast.

You can't have all that in a Camry.

Why people expect from the MBA what they do from an MBP is beyond me...they are simply different beasts.

That may be so, love, but personal opinion on these forums leads to all this aggravating crap I've been reading all over about people putting other people down and forcing their own opinions on others.

Mr Pot, meet Mr Kettle.

Ummmm, I have read this entire thread and other threads where you have posted, and there hasn't been one positive thing that I can see you have posted recently. You have done nothing but rag on other people for their opinion.

ALL notebooks will heat up when placed on a soft surface, by their very nature they rely on having at least some circulation under the unit.

I knew a guy who left his notebook on and ontop of a couch when he needed a new one. It was either too slow or corporate IT would not replace it.

It heats up, fries, and then there is no choice but to get them a new one.

Like? I just make fun of people and their lame excuses as to why a particular computer is "underpowered" because of one usb port, et al. I don't rag on other people's choices or opinions. I just like to make fun of stupid and lame excuses that people come up with, like "my laptop gets hot when I put it on a pillow..."

It just boils down to this. You cannot block vents. No matter what surface your laptop is on, it will get hot, some surfaces quicker than other. With the MBR, it is near impossible not to black the vents if your surface isn't hard. This is because there are no sides or back, where laptops normally vent.

Just FYI for anyone looking at one. I'm sure they are nice and cool on the tables at the apple store...

Yes, I could have had a defective one as well, someone else posted a similar issue so it's very possible.

I doubt it was defective. Every laptop I've ever had that I've tried to use on a non-flat surface got hot. Apples, Dells, Thinkpads, you name it.

Well, come back in a little while when the trolls have wandered off to bash something else... ;) They start stumbling and falling down on the job. It has something to do with their Pinocchio-like noses growing longer and longer and disturbing their centers of gravity.

I am certainly keeping my MB Air, it is the featherweight joy I thought it would be to take up and downstairs during my workday.

LOL, you wish that the MBA turned out to be a bad product in real life, don't you? :p

I spend less time on this forum because of all the pissing and moaning about a product that someone will NEVER buy or WANT!

I went to the store to look at them and I'm scared to death of that vent location also. Even if I balance the rubber feet on my legs, I can't see how the vent wouldn't be blocked a bit by my knees. I wouldn't be using the MBA on a desk 90% of the time. I'm really worried about it (and the limited opening angle of the display), but the MB is always hot as hell in the store and feels so much heavier in comparison. IDK what to do now.

My MBP gets pretty hot when I play games or I am encoding stuff. If I am not at a table, I rest it on a plank of pine wood that I cut out with just enough space for the MBP and a surface for my BT mouse to track. I rest this in my lap, and it's fairly light, insulates me extremely well, and allows the machine to vent better.

It would be a PITA if I had to do it regularly, but again, it's only necessary when the laptop is doing heavy lifting. Something like this or Sun Baked's cutting board idea might work well in certain circumstances.
