Dear all,

I believe that I have spent enough time on this thread (https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/unresponsive-screen-ipad-pro-12-9-2nd-gen.2121051/) and finally decided to sell my iPad Pro 12.9 2nd gen due to the touch unresponsiveness issue.

I need to get new iPad and planning to get iPad Pro 11" 3rd gen.
Does it suffer from all the issues of touch similar to the 2nd gen 12.9"? Kindly advise as I am planning to buy the new one within one or two days maximum.

Thank you,

No such thing as a 10.5 3rd gen.

Promising. For how long you have been using it?

I think you misunderstood, they meant there is no such thing as a 10.5” third gen. The only 10.5” iPad Pro is the 2nd gen, the same generation as your previous one. If you want the third gen of that size, 11” is your option (similar physical size, bigger screen).

As for whether they have these touch issues, who knows. But the 10.5” is, basically, the same tech as your 12.9” 2nd gen. I can only tell you my 12.9” 3rd gen is fine and I had issues with my 2nd gen. But YMMV.

Thank you very much. I fixed the title. I meant the other one (11 inches).

My 11 Pro has no touch issues - it has been 100% responsive and that is with a film screen protector on since purchase.

Yeah seems it affects all iPads including 11" and even minis. You can check this oldest thread on I know on iFixit about the touch issue. People are complaining (for two years already!) about every existing model.

I've never experienced this on any iPad I've owned. I'm curious if the people having problems use glass screen protectors.

My 11” had minor touch issues (day one purchase) but they have since gone away.
I used to have issues touch-typing on the 11”, but now I have no issues at all (basically it was all centered around they responsiveness in they keyboard in portrait mode - landscape worked fine).

Not sure if it was a software update that fixed it, or the issues just went away, but I’ve been pretty happy with it for a few months now.

Never had any touch issues on my iPad Mini 5 (day one purchase).

I do not use screen protectors.

Edit:

One other note. I'm always very skeptical when forum posters conclude it affects ALL models just because a few experience it (I often do not experience the issues other posters apparently have to return their products for multiple times).

When I first experienced the issue, I was curious and went back to multiple Apple Stores (over a period of time) to test display Pro models and they all experienced the issue. It was indeed widespread.

Fast forward to today - since I noticed the issue "fixed" I went back to a few Apple Stores, in a few different states, and again tested the display models - they were also no longer displayed the issue.

I’ve never had touch issues on any iPad I’ve owned either, which has been almost every one since the first generation, and I have always used glass screen protectors.

Why would anyone keep an iPad that had touch issues? Apple has a warranty against defects and they also sell Apple care. I’ve own every iPad except iPad 4, only had touch issues with one. My launch day gen 3 12.9 had touch issues, I took it to my local Apple store and they replaced it. Haven’t had any issues with the new one.

There’s zero reason to keep an iPad that is defective, unless you’re buying out of warranty used.

Edit... I haven’t owned the new mini 5 either.

it is definitely a poor coding.. i had it, then i didnt have it and now it is back with the latest ios. not as bad as it was, but some hiccups daily. cant be only harware because then it wouldnt disappear and come back with the os update so it has to be in the bad coding.

when i bought mine it worked fine for a couple of months.
a couple months later i saw hiccups, days later, it became unresponsive so badly, that restarting didnt help. only reinstalling the os helped, but only for awhile - it always came back. then the update before the newest helped and no problems at all. now, months later after the newest os update it shows hiccups again. not as bad it used be, but missing letters, tapping again and again without response. but it works much better than it worked when it was totally unresponsive.

people have replaced their ipads many times without resolving the issue. so, a very bad coding i say.

Only time I ever have touch issues (with a screen protector) is when charging, and that’s not even a given each time.

Congrats, you're a lucky person!
No everybody is as lucky as you are. I still hear about people buying iPads and returning them back one after one due to this problem.

Not really. We recently purchased 20 iPad Mini 5s And 20 of the new Airs to use for Augmented Reality simulations. I set them all up personally and there were no touch issues in any of them. I realize that’s not necessarily indicative, but I think if the trend was that large we would have gotten at least one.

I have a glass screen protector on my 3rd gen 12.9” and even with iOS 13 PB installed I’ve experienced 0 issues. Folks here must have had terrible luck (I’ve made few AC claims myself over the years for random issues, so I sympathize) or they may be just a little too “picky” about their experience using Apple products.

Given the price, people should be picky - I just think that people see a handful of posts and assume it’s a widespread issue.

Unfortunately handful is underestimation. Even while personally I had this issue on 2 iPad Pros 12.9. Two of my friends that I personally know experience this issue on their iPads....Here are some (not even all of them) posts about problems with iPad unresponsive touchscreen, it even got to MacRumors news:

Yeah it’s definitely a widespread issue I have an iPad Pro 12.9 myself that has the issue and strangely it seems to come and go and doesn’t happen all the time - but is certainly annoying when it does happen

This must be costing Apple quite a bit since there are numerous posts about people returning and swapping iPad pros 2 and 3 times and still having the same issue

I keep waiting for an iOS update to be a final fix but it hasn’t happened - crossing fingers for iOS for iPad maybe that will do the magic?
