Why would anyone keep an iPad that had touch issues? Apple has a warranty against defects and they also sell Apple care. I’ve own every iPad except iPad 4, only had touch issues with one. My launch day gen 3 12.9 had touch issues, I took it to my local Apple store and they replaced it. Haven’t had any issues with the new one.

There’s zero reason to keep an iPad that is defective, unless you’re buying out of warranty used.

Edit... I haven’t owned the new mini 5 either.
If you’re out of the return window and cannot prove it’s defective, Apple will not swap it out. Hence the wash I took on the 2017 12.9”. I did return every subsequent iPad Pro or Mini (yes 2019) that exhibited this issue.

I finally filmed the irresponsiveness on my 2018 iPad last night, but forgot to leave it alone this morning so I have to wait until it happens again to bring it to Apple.

If you filmed it why wait?

My 11” had minor touch issues (day one purchase) but they have since gone away.
I used to have issues touch-typing on the 11”, but now I have no issues at all (basically it was all centered around they responsiveness in they keyboard in portrait mode - landscape worked fine).

Not sure if it was a software update that fixed it, or the issues just went away, but I’ve been pretty happy with it for a few months now.

Never had any touch issues on my iPad Mini 5 (day one purchase).

Hello @bensisko I have just opened a thread for those who owns iPad mini 5. Please share your experience there so we can have it as a reference for everybody.

https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/ipad-mini-5-feedback-and-testimony-share-yours.2187782/

Thank you,

Congrats, you're a lucky person!
No everybody is as lucky as you are. I still hear about people buying iPads and returning them back one after one due to this problem.

This is not a widespread problem. If it was, more mainstream press would have picked up the story. Kind of like the bending issue. I have no doubt some people have 'bent' Ipads and some people have touch issues. But like cars, TVs and anything else that's manufactured by the millions there are bound to be lemons and extremely unlucky.

I've yet to experience any of these issues on my 12.9 but I've been keeping an eye out for trouble.
My first iPad Pro 12.9 Gen2 didn’t have the issue but I dropped it and shattered the screen. I got it replaced under AppleCare+ and the replacement had the touch issue. That one had the screen fail and I got a warranty replacement for the replacement and it doesn’t have the issue. I would push for a replacement if you have a touch issue for anyone that has the issue.

My schedule for one, I cannot go to Apple until this Wednesday the earliest and I thought they also have to see this happening at the store?

Just go whenever you can and say it's intermittent but regular enough that you were able to catch in on film

Unfortunately handful is underestimation. Even while personally I had this issue on 2 iPad Pros 12.9. Two of my friends that I personally know experience this issue on their iPads....Here are some (not even all of them) posts about problems with iPad unresponsive touchscreen, it even got to MacRumors news:

There are millions and millions of iPad owners so I would think you would need many thousands or even a million or more reported issues for this to be even considered a minor problem. The number of reported issues you could ever hope to find online represents only a very tiny percentage so really shouldn’t be considered in my opinion. You can find this crap on any tech product and unnecessarily scare yourself out of buying anything. Get what you want and forget this nonsense.

why dont you wait for the iPadOS official version?

I have already replaced 2 iPads (2nd gen 12.9"), tried all the iOS versions (including the betas & iPadOS) and there was 0 improvement (literally, 0). I wanted to get rid of it asap before it loses its value even more.

You say it (and count people) exactly like you're an Apple marketing employee. Can you show me real numbers? Or is just your guess.
Also please don't tell me what I should and what I shouldn't do.

But if I go through one or two Apple products with this issue, why would I want to continue to purchase them? Especially since i know others with the same models experience the issue. Seems to me it makes more sense to just take my business elsewhere, which I've done.

Do you doubt that there are millions and millions of iPad owners? My post is based on common sense and nothing else. I’m not “telling” you to do anything, I’m suggesting you use a bit of logic before thinking that a handful of internet posts (compared to total ownership) really means anything. I couldn’t care less what you do.

I hope you’re able to have a pleasant day.

Any of my days is pleasant, thank you.

I see, you have no data it's just guessing.

1) You don't know the number of issues reported to Apple
2) You don't know anything if it's tiny or even the percentage of the sales
3) "really shouldn’t be considered" sounds like a person who tries to make the issue looking insignificant for some kind of reason

You don't know how big it is. But looking at numerous threads, YouTube videos, Amazon reviews, iFixit threads and Apple support forums with people complaining about all models of iPads developing touch problems after some time... I didn't see so many posts except for the butterfly keyboard which was admitted by Apple as being significant enough. My logic tells me this issue is significant at the same level.

It is an iPad Pro issue (just like the title of the thread) - not a general iPad issue - makes me wonder if you even have an iPad pro?

I have a 10.5 pro and that is irrelevant to having enough common sense not to deprive myself of things I want because of stories on the internet. Especially when I have a good warranty. Good day to you too.

Dear all,

I believe that I have spent enough time on this thread (https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/unresponsive-screen-ipad-pro-12-9-2nd-gen.2121051/) and finally decided to sell my iPad Pro 12.9 2nd gen due to the touch unresponsiveness issue.

I need to get new iPad and planning to get iPad Pro 11" 3rd gen.
Does it suffer from all the issues of touch similar to the 2nd gen 12.9"? Kindly advise as I am planning to buy the new one within one or two days maximum.

Thank you,

I have a new (undamaged) iPad Pro 11 (April 2019) with persistent intermittent touchscreen issues. At times the touchscreen is unresponsive to tap and swipe. Also, the iPad Pro stutters, lags, and gets hung up. Yes I did everything to try to correct the issues: Apple Tech assistance was no help. Apple store diagnostics could not find anything wrong? Check the attached screenshot: It is difficult to use a Pro touchscreen when the screen characters disappear — what is that about? My solution, I try to continue to use the iPad Pro 11, and use a reliable iPad Air in tandem when the Pro glitches.

Your screenshot shows cursor mode which is activated when you use 2 fingers or long press on the keyboard. So are you actually doing this accidentally or is the iPad incorrectly detecting that you are?

I see, you have no data it's just guessing.

And neither do you. But despite this say:

Yeah seems it affects all iPads including 11" and even minis. You can check this oldest thread on I know on iFixit about the touch issue. People are complaining (for two years already!) about every existing model.

I mean come off it, this is patently untrue.

I have an 11 and have not experienced this problem, so for some reason I seem to be excluded from your definition of ‘all”. It’s abundantly clear if it affected all iPads this would already be known as fact.

You’re personally not experiencing this problem doesn’t mean it doesn’t affect all iPad models. Just look at the thread, it does.

1. You didn’t address my first comment about you guessing just as much as the next guy.

2. I should clarify in case we’re at crossed purposes. Do you mean all models can be affected or all models are affected?

3. If the former and we take your assumption as true then surely the most simple and therefore likely explanation is that it is a bug in iOS. To instead come to the conclusion that it is a hardware fault that has crept into multiple models and still hasn’t been designed out is a large leap.

1. Let's not turn it into a Usenet haha

2. I mean that all models are affected including normal iPads, minis and pros. People are complaining about all models. Personally I have this problem with 2 iPad pros 12.9".

and

3. If you check all the threads you will see that no update ever fixed it during 2 years! I lost all hope that Apple will ever address it looking at all other widespread hardware problems that Apple always actively denied (like butterfly keyboard on Mac).
And no, it's not a bug in iOS because
a) It develops over time
b) It returns back after full software/settings reset on the same iOS version/iPad.

4. My reason behind all my complaining is I just want it to get fixed by Apple. What's your reason for defending Apple?
