Why was it a risk?

Any time you purchase RAM, even if it's the identical spec of what you need, there's a risk of it not working because some computers are very picky about the RAM that you put in. Supposedly, Macs are more picky than other machines, but I've yet to find a stick of RAM that a Mac didn't like.

Couldn't that just have been a faulty stick of RAM though? Crucial send out faulty ones too... been there done that.

Same here! I just ordered 2 gigs of Crucial ram for my 24" iMac. One stick was DOA and I had to RMA it. I bought it straight from Crucial. Anything can go bad, but this kinda broke my heart. The prices they charge, they should have some way to test it first at least.

Crucial Ram, not expensive

:apple: This is probably cause its been about a year since the last post
but I'm going to get 4GB (2GBx2) of Ram for Crucial for only $81.98 for my 20 inch iMac. That comes out to about $20.50/gig. That is really cheap I think.
I currently have only one 1GB stick from Apple.

Mine is crucial Ram too, it works great, bought a pair of 1G DDR2 667 for 77euros last, spetember, I remember the price droped to 44 euros the very next week... ..lol,,,, well you never know
