Same. I take off the folio when I am using the iPad on the couch or bed, and I can’t stand the iPad being any thicker or heavier then it originally is.

The magnets are strong, I give Apple credit for this.
I find the magnets are not very strong on mine.

The magnets on my 2018 11” iPad Pro are much more sturdy.

I often use a leather sleeve from Harber London instead of
I had Apple's leather sleeve for my old 12.9" 2nd gen. I've never been a fan of cases, don't use them at all, no applecare usually either. And with the older, heavier model I had, a case added more annoying weight and bulk. The older model folios only covered the screen at least. I tried one and didn't care for it, the extra step of opening every time I want to use it. The sleeve granted some protection while not using, and had pencil storage as a bonus.

I've been trying to find the old 12.9" leather sleeve everywhere to use with the 13" and I can't find it anywhere online! There are loads of 10.5" leather sleeves that works really well with the 11" M4 at least.

They were overpriced, I think I bought mine used or open box back in 2017. I sold it with my old iPad, sorry I don't have it for you!

11” M4, naked, all the way. I never put it in a case or folio in the house. It’s a thing of beauty, and pretty strong, so why put a clunky heavy folio on it in the safety of your house?

Even outside I just take extra care, however I think I might get the folio to be able to confidently put it down on the outside coffee table after using it. Currently I’m just holding it all the time then bringing it back inside onto the sofa.

I have a MKB but that is used for light work and watching video in bed or travel, which it’s awesome for.

So yeah, no case for these bad boys. They are too thin and nice for that. However, if I had the 13”, I’d be more nervous, hence why I didn’t get one. I already have a MBA M2 for a bigger display. With the 13”, I wouldn’t want to constantly be worrying about a bigger sheet of glass.

I am going to have to try this out….

Do you use your iPhone naked too?

Same here....I just have a basic folio by ESR that I use to move the iPad around or to set it on my desk/table. While using it, it comes out of the folio.

My iPad Air 3rd gen is always out of a case, never dropped it aside from on the bed or sofa. I just love the thinness and design of it!

I’ve thought about doing this as well. It’s such a shame covering up a beautiful device with a case.

Relatedly, every time I upgrade my iPhone I think, “I should use it without a case,” but always chicken out. My iPhone‘s back sees the light of day the day it’s taken out of the box, the day it’s traded in, and a handful of times in between when I switch cases.
Same here. The 13” M4 iPad Pro‘s size and weight are delightful with the Apple Smart Folio, but a joy when used without one — but risky. Same thing with my iPhone. I’ve transitioned to essentially a naked iPhone 13 mini. I say essentially naked because the only thing it wears is the MagSafe Apple wallet and a tempered glass screen protector. The MagSafe wallet adds utility and also makes the mini surprisingly easier to hold. I’ve been using it this way for 3+ years and dont plan to go back to using a case with my phone. I would love a similar magnetically-attached back for the iPad Pro. That plus a tempered glass screen protector would provide a balance of size/weight and protection that works for me.

My Smart Folio has not come off on my 13” since day one. Used the folios on all of my iPads.

In Best Buy the other day - I thought of how nice it would be able to use the 13" without a case. I would probably do the folio for carrying in my bag etc and around the house. But pop it off when I was using it....

That is, in my humble opinion, still the case for all of Apple’s iPad cases.
Here, the 11” iPad Air Smart Folio costs the equivalent of $110. While they feel nice, look nice and don’t stink like some of the third party folios I’ve tried, I honestly don’t think they should sell for that much.

Still missing the smart cover of my iPad Air 2: the best option in my opinion, a mess that Apple changed magnets position.

I am using the magic keyboard with my iPad 11 inch M4. However, when I want to read, I take it off the magic keyboard to hold it in my hands and enjoy the thinness. Coming from a 13 inch m4 the difference is really striking. But even compared to my M1 11 inch, the difference is still really noticeable.

I completely agree, the 13” feels like a sheet of metal without the “over protection”. I have the MKB, Smart Folio and a sleeve to hold everything when away from home

I am holding it bare typing this comment, whilst enveloped in soft cushions of course!;)

Still trying to decide if I put a case on. Since my verizon warranty covers the Ipad if it breaks, stolen etc., well, maybe I will start doing naked.

I use dbrand (dbrand.com) on my iPad 12.9" M1 when it was out of a case to protect it from scuffs and scratches.

Is it my imagination or they changed the design of the smartcover for the iPad pro 13” 7th gen so as to only able to have a single stand position? Previous smartcovers were able to fold into two positions: one almost flat on the table and one more vertical, as to watch a video. It’s a clear step back for me, I don’t understand the rationale.

The Apple case has two primary positions but also has the ability to slide (from a near 90 degree up right to a 45 degree slant) the stand between the two primary positions. I believe it's using the magnets in the case, providing you a tilt that you prefer.

I see, there’s a new way to fold the Smart Folio as to be more vertical. It’s just different from the previous design. Thanks!

it does still have two positions, but I hate it. The more horizontal position is achieved in one of two ways. You can either "flip out" the triangularly folded-up cover out from under the iPad, but that's too low for my tastes. The better position is where you "tuck in" the folded-up cover under the iPad. However, in this case the cover remains precariously in position magnetically -- it's too easy to for it to flip back out from under the iPad when typing.

I ended up buying the ESR smart cover, which is similar to the smart covers of prior generations of iPad Pros. There are some downsides to the ESR:

(1) It includes a pencil "wrap around" that I don't need. This isn't that big of a deal ... I just keep the "wrap around" in the open position, magnetically secured to the back side of the cover. It does add some bulk of course. And I guess it's a nice feature if/when I do buy a pencil.

(2) It's thicker than the Apple version. I ordinarily wouldn't view this as an issue (and as it is, it is a minor one), but one of the things I love about the new iPad Pro is how thin it is -- the Apple version of the cover still makes it possible to discern this thinness, whereas with the ESR you lose that ability.

However, another thing I like about the ESR better than the Apple version is that I find the edges of the Apple cover uncomfortably sharp, which I never experienced with their past covers, and which I don't with the ESR.

(3) The Apple version comes in nicer colors than the ESR, which is of course personal preference. Apple offers a nice "denim" color. For the new Pros , ESR offers navy blue, pink, purple, silver gray, black, and white -- none of which are bad, but none of which are as cool looking to me as Apple's denim.

As djinn stated, it slides. It has “endless” positions in between.
