keeping formatted text in copy/paste

When pasting formatted text from Word to Illu (or Indesign) the formatting (Bold/Italics, Coloured text etc.) is lost. Is there a way to keep it?
 
Place it instead of pasting it. Should be under File > Place. Gives you a lot of controls. For anything beyond that, use the Google machine.
