Oh, I agree he just shut his eyes and swung at a softball and hit it out. But I think that recommendation is at the heart of his popularity because it worked out so well for so many people.
A couple years ago, I purchased a motor drive for my old Canon F1-N. It came with no instructions, and I couldn't find instructions for it anywhere. On the 3rd page of Google listings, Ken Rockwell had reviewed the item at his site, along with giving detailed instructions on how to use it. I sent him an email thanking him, and received a nice email in return.
It doesn't make his website any different, it still is what it is. But he was gracious enough to acknowledge my thanks, and his site is not completely without value.
