UPDATE: Kevin Rose now predicts that the next iPhone is actually an iPhonograph, a black and aluminium media player for wax-pressed records. AND that the iSight will be replaced by iDageurrotype.

An FM Transmitter built in would be awesome, but I don't really see the need for a receiver.

The 3G data networks are really not upto the task of delivering live radio on the move to significant numbers of people in nearly all countries. Indeed, in the UK the iPhone terms and conditions explicitly state that you may not use your 3G data connection for listening to streaming media for this reason.

Having an FM radio would dramatically cut down on people wanting to stream stations and save the networks considerable amounts of money on bandwidth provision and network QoS issues - hence it would not surprise me at all if the networks were pushing very hard for this.

Phazer

Digital radio would be even better.

Pressuring "major mp3 player" manufacturers to include DAB radios to encourage digital switchover was mentioned as a part of British goverment stategy in a paper recently.

That made me laugh. That strategy is so screwed up now that it looks almost certain DAB will die. DAB is mostly a UK think too.

Most DAB devices are power hogs too. That tech ain't gonna work out at all. IP radio will likely take over.

In the USA, the corresponding technology is called HD Radio. HD in this case stands for "hybrid digital", so named because initially both the conventional analog and the new digital signals are broadcast simultaneously, and the digital signal occupies unused (or de-emphasized) portions of the same band and frequency as the original FM or AM station. The long-term objective, if things go as planned, would be that gradually the analog portion of the broadcast would be phased out, and the freed bandwidth would be allocated to improve the quality or extra features (alternate programming, etc) of the digital signal.

Id have to guess this means the push to talk feature of some phones... Nothing like people walking around letting everyone hear their conversations! :)

Next Apple's R&D is gonna start thinking about developing the iSmoke, they sell a package with some dry wood, a box of matches and 1 blanket.

Instructions: take wood out of the package, place it on the ground, light a match and set the wood on fire, wait 2 to 5 minutes to gain optimum network coverage, then use the blanket to comunicate via smoke signals!!

Then Apple's R&D remembers that they advertized about how this system would have a exlent network coverage, but they forgot about windy days, and since on windy days you can't archive the necessary smoke consistency to comunicate they will get sued for 5 million in damages from false advertizing...

I would rather have more CPU, better screen or more battery life before more bells and whistles.

As long as it has an abacus built in, I'll be happy.

I would prefer two; That way when they release the multi-core iPhone, I can multi-task better. "Load your second abacus in the background with the all new iPhone -multicore"

UPDATE: Kevin Rose says the new iphone will come attached with a non-removable Darth Vader. Replacement of the non-removable Darth Vader will be offered by apple for a nominal fee of just $79.99.

Yeah that's what we need, 18th century technology on the next iPhone

Personally, I'd like it. When you really need to listen to the radio--such as during some type of emergency--mobile/data transmissions will be overwhelmed by people making frantic calls and you'll get nothing. Perhaps even the tower's will be gone depending on what type of an emergency it is.

There have been a few examples in the past 10 years where people have relied on real radios(the old "18th century" kind) to get important information during these crises. Maybe I'm a little more sensitive to this since I've actually experienced these situations though.

Anyway, FM radio has a better audio quality than cheesy "radio" apps available at the app store anyway.

For a long time I would have been over the moon about this, but now that I can listen to pretty much any local station and hundreds of stations around the country on my iPhone, I no longer need this nor think it would be terribly useful.

what about a walkie talkie type system i know other phones have it would be somewhat bulkier but then you could talk to people within range and not use up minutes.

just a thought that will probably never happen

Is this initially dismissed rumor coming back?

In Jan when Rose suggested the idea of an "FM Radio" it was hard to believe.

However with more recent rumors saying the next iPhone would have an "FM transmitter" sounds like the initial rumor had legs.

if Kevin Rose says it's true than it's true.

He has been an extremely reliable source concerning Apple.

He has been an extremely reliable source concerning Apple.

Well, if I remember correctly he wasn't 100% sure at the time, he was essentially passing on something he heard, which at the time was hard to believe but since then there have been various mentions of some FM radio being included. Still nothing concrete.

Why is everyone so quick to discount Kevin Rose? While I could care less for this feature, he has been right more often than not recently.

iPod nano, iPhone cut and paste and search if I recall - he was pretty much dead on. Sure he hasn't been right every time but recently he has. Also, from what I understand you never know what Apple does. His source may be telling the complete truth but may be unaware of something. For example on the original iPhone I seem to recall him stating that the iPhone would have a physical keyboard. For all you know the source may have simply seen a prototype out of many. My point is that with Apple you never know for sure because of their secrecy and I think people all too often are too quick to discount things. Just my two cents.
