Hi guys,

I noticed the article on MacRumors about the keyboard issues with the MacBook Pro's. I just recently bought and returned 2 MacBooks and had to give them back because of the same kinds of keyboard issues the Pro users are having. This happened when I got them home, so yes I believe it starts happening when the MacBook heats up as when I checked them in the store they seemed fine. I am now going to wait for the new MacBooks to come out and hopefully they will have solved this problem. Has anyone else had these issues with their MacBook? I'm pretty horrified with this experience from Apple. Not cool

what issue did your macbooks have? mine is fine (2016), am actually really happy with it...

The keys. First MacBook's bottom left keys were slightly more smashed in than the others and had no play. The second MacBook's delete key was funky and it would do things on it's own, like delete a couple emails in a row. I'v decided to wait till the new ones come out. As a shareholder this really pisses me off....

right, but it's not a universal issue, it's something you experienced. what about all the macbook users who don't have a problem? you had some bad luck, and surely that will change. your experience doesn't define the product, it just is... your experience. good luck with your next mac, for real..!

Has someone had a chance to compare the rMB and new rMBP keyboards? Like, not just Apple Store compare but actually use both? I saw a pretty sweet deal on the 2016 512GB/m5 rMB and I am tempted to give it a chance, that particular store has a 30 day return policy, so even if Apple announce price drops or (r)evolutionary new models, I'd be covered and able to do extended testing.

I know both generations of the new keyboard have problems, but I wish it were possible to find out what percentage of users actually experience them. I don't think a thread called "who doesn't have any problems with the new keyboard" would work...

you make the same error as fisherking - you claim to know that it is not a universal issue, but how are you so certain? - bottom line is that lot of people are experiencing it, so maybe that group of people is either using it more heavily, OR, the particular way that a group of humans are using it is causing the problem - meaning that the macbook/pro is not able to hold itself well in specific and certain day to day conditions , and this is not good, so perhaps for a group of people it is universal.

when you say 'a lot of people', where are you getting your facts? what's 'a lot'? 200, 2 million? and what percentage of 2015/2016 macbook owners have keyboard issues?

an opinion is not a fact. if you have 2 friends with macbook issues, that's still... 2 people. i am not making an error, not at all...

Very common. The butterfly mechanism is fragile.:(

'very'... as in? all these posts, with no facts to back them up. what percentage of newer macbooks have problem keyboards? facts are so much more useful than opinions (but, sigh, that doesn't seem to stop anyone from posting their own opinions or theories as 'fact').

am not saying some people aren't experiencing a problem, but if you balance that against all the macbook users who don't post on online forums, or don't have a problem, how can you determine the number of people who do have an issue?

What is your point? Who cares about the exact count. Many people have the issue and it's obvious when you look at how many posts there are about it online.

again, what's 'many'? and how does that stack up against all the people who don't live in forums, and don't post online, but use macbooks? all i'm saying is, that making a statement based on internet postings isn't the same as presenting facts.

I too am on my 3rd rMB due to keyboard issues. The enter key on this new one has all but completely failed. I have had nothing but problems with my first gen rMB and now the newest generation is a fail. It is impossible to tell how many people have failed keyboards, you are correct about that. The complete lack of surprise from the apple store is a give away that it must be semi-common in my opinion.

Yup. Is it 1%? Is it 99%? This is what I would like to know. It is very upsetting to read some people are on their third rMB because of the keyboard failing repeatedly, but then, I'm on my third set of Logitech speakers in two months because they keep on failing as well. Then I looked it up and apparently I'm just unlucky.

Thanks to Brexit part II I can pay almost the same price for 512 GB/m5 rMB on Amazon UK as I would here in the NL for the base model. Tempting. Very tempting. But if I do it and Apple drop the prices four weeks later I'm not going to be a happy bunny.

Fisherking believe me you dont know what facts are yet. You learned 1st grade science or maybe daddy told you something and you think you know it all - scientists would laugh at your silly remarks. Hopefully one day ull overcome yoir black white view of the world and what so called 'facts' are. Start by Hume maybe.

i have no idea what you're on about. i'm merely pointing out that a theory or opinion is not a fact. is that not true?

maybe it's a widespread problem. but without actual data...

what does 'semi-common' mean? and how exactly did the apple store show a 'complete lack of surprise'?

Semi-common would indicate a low but steady frequency of occurrence. Complete lack of surprise? Well they were devoid of surprise, as in not surprised in the least as one might expect if it were a rare occurance. Kind of like "oh we are not surprised, your not the first one we have seen with this exact issue". Hope that helps

'steady frequency of occurence'... but we still don't know the scale of that. percentages. am not denying some people have a problem with the keyboard, am just pointing out we don't know what that percentage is. it's inevitable that some units out of every new mac release (or any tech release, or a car, for example), will have a problem. but unless everyone is reporting that problem (samsung phone, anyone?) it's a smaller issue (and of course, should be rectified).

and when you say 'the apple store'; are we talking one employee? a dozen? everyone? this is the problem with these sort of posts, people making 'absolute' statements.

You think you had a bad time with the new butterfly mechanism keyboard? Well think again!

In only four months of usage I had to replace TWO keyboards because the keys would start to stuck and produce funny irritating noises when pressed in.

Living in a third world country (Croatia) where Apple's support is as slow as a two legged donkey, I waited in total 64 days for the keyboards to be replaced. 64 days out of 120 days owning it?!

And on top of it, as soon as the outside temperature reached 20 degrees celsius, MacBook heats up so much it's impossible to use it, even the keys are getting hot.

All in all a terrible terrible device to use.

unfortunate story, but certainly not the 'common' experience, just what you experienced. for many, it's a great mac (for me, my favorite, and i started with the 2400c...).

According to the guy from Apple's service, they had to change the keyboard on nearly 30% of MacBooks 12' therefor I seriously doubt that I'm the only guy experiencing this. Also regarding heating up of the device, how on Earth am I supposed to use a device that reaches 140 °F on a normal day? And when it gets this hot it starts to slow down drastically.
And they say this is a normal working temperature for a fan-less device.

On the Keynote presentation of the device they said it's the successor of the previous generation of MacBook. Size wise and performance wise it is not the case. From my point of view this is an expensive toy for rich kids.

ha, brilliant. an apple service guy told you this. 30%. he got this number from? a panicked meeting at apple? an interoffice memo? and if the number was really this high, why is this not a major tech news story? IF he really told you that, that still doesn't make it fact. and facts are far more valuable than speculation, rumors, or guesses.... etc.
