I've owned both. The MBP keyboard feels way more sturdy and professional than the flimsy keys on the MacBook, in my opinion.
Agreed. I happen to like the quality of the mbp's keyboard more, but this is all a matter of personal preference.
Thinkpad keyboards are the best in the world, tried and tested!
Indeed they are on laptops, though I wonder just what that has to do with this topic...:p ;)
The glass is always full. Why does it have to be half full?
You've never heard the expression before?

Of course I have heard it before, but what does it have to do with a post about keyboards?

Sometimes the MBP keyboard feels like it has latency when I'm typing...especially with MSWord. That's my only complaint...I haven't really used a MB to compare.

I am using the same MBP config as you and I have the same problem. First keystroke sometimes doesn't work either. I don't like the more concave feel of these keys. My accuracy is worse now then with my Dell or Compaq Presario, and my fingers seem to have to stretch more to reach keys (I am not saying those PCs are 'better', I am just saying I type better on them for some reason).

Word

Word feels slow on all Mac Intel computers right now, as it's running in Rosetta. When the Universal Word 2008 comes out, this shouldn't be a problem.

One of the things I really like about my macbook pro keyboard is that it is so quiet. Because it doesn't click as loud as the macbook keyboard, I feel less intrusive in quiet bookstores or coffee-shops. Also, it feels very comfortable moving from a full sized keyboard on a dell. Mind you I also have the aluminum wireless keyboard at home, and I enjoy that quite a bit as well. All in all, they both serve the purposes and the combination I have now (macbook pro keyboard for on the go and aluminum at home) is the best I have ever used.

My five cents.

I have a MBP at home and an iMac at work with the new wireless keyboard. I like them both, even though the wireless keyboard kinda looks like a Fisher-Price "My First Keyboard" thing.

Sure the keyboard is plastic, the keys move around a lot, and they are not all aligned perfectly, which annoys me a lot of the time, but if i got a new MBP for free, i would take a saw to my current MBP and cut the keyboard out of it and use it with my desktop. This keyboard is by far the best typing surface i've ever come across, and i hate going back to school and using my desktop Dell keyboard. I find myself typing papers on this just so i can use the keyboard, even if i have to transfer my work back the the PC for the finishing touches and printing/all that good stuff.

Apple should do away with their new keyboards and make ones like the MBP.

End of discussion!

Hmmm

I think the MBP has slightly too much key travel in the keys...I feel like I'm reaching. Also there is too much "wiggle" in them. I do like the size, shape and indentation of the keys a lot, but I feel like I have to be gentle with them.

My wife's MB keyboard seems much sturdier, and I feel I can bang away on it.

Ironically, I cannot use the new Apple external keyboards at all. I want to like them, but they just do not work for me. Gawd help me when my older BT Keyboard dies.

Yeah, no matter how hard companies try, they can never make a keyboard that is like their laptops, i don't know how they can't. I personally have not tried the MB keyboards, so i can not comment.

agree

I agree, the keyboard of the mbpro is ok but not great. The keyboard of the ibook G4 is much better.

Well...

i never fort it would get this attention thanks guys

Short of looking at my screen, my laptop keyboard is the number one way I interact with it, making it very, very important. Many power users also navigate using keyboard shortcuts, making their interaction time that much more.

I agree, all good information.

The keyboard on the MB is one of two things holding me back from getting one, the other being that it doesn't have a dedicated video card, hence why I'm saving up for a MBP.

Well he was pointing out how most laptops have horrible keyboards, and depending how one looks at it, that can be the glass half full or half empty I suppose. Whatever. It's really not the crux of this thread. :p

With Word that's due to Rosetta. Once Office 08 comes out, I doubt this will be a problem.

The MBP keyboard is absolutely the best laptop keyboard I've ever laid my fat fingers on.

A couple of issues though: they're a bit too wiggle-able, get snagged by vacuum cleaners and the sort too easily, and get misaligned.

hehe fair enough :)

Oh and apologies to Cassie if my reply came over with the wrong 'attitude' (having just re-read it, I phrased it badly). I didn't mean it to be challenging, was just curious :)

It's ok, I don't own a MBP nor a MB, but from what I've used at the Apple store, the MBP keyboard feels like a $400 Dell laptop. It feels like if you took it out, you could easily snap it in half without much effort.

I had every revision of power book from 2002 to my last 17" 1.67 I am sure they use cheaper materials on the MBP keyboards, because they have changed from my first 1.83 MBP. The new keyboards feel thinner and also they do not have the same texture my powerbooks used to have. BUt i still prefer them to the Mb's.

I also like the MB keyboard better than the MBP! But I use the bluetooth apple keyboard when I use my MBP. I do like the lighted key pad just like the MB style better.

I've got both, MacBook and MacBook Pro (although the MacBook is my dad's, but I've used it a lot). The MacBook Pro keyboard is much nicer to type on over time. The MacBook keyboard gives me aching knuckles and end-of-my-fingers after a while (technical term :p). Something to do with the travel and shape of the keys. I also prefer the MacBook Pro keyboard finish...

MacBook Pro = Backlit keyboard

MacBook = No backlit keyboard

For me the MBP keyboard is therefore better. I am not picky about what I type on since they are all pretty much the same. I don't mind either design, but the MBP keyboard is not cheap by my standards. The entire book could be built stronger though, all Apple portables seem to be a little on the flimsy side compared to their PC counterparts, even the stuff from Dell.

Sony right now is at the top of my list.

Here's something I never got why is it you need a backlit keyboard your not supposed to look at the keyboard I never do.

Although yes Mac's are somewhat flimsy but Dell's are really sturdy they have no give very rigid machines. Never tried Sony.
