I'm plagued by telemarketing type robocalls several times a day. They come from all different numbers all over the country, so adding a particular number to the block list will not solve this problem. (Luckily, I never get spam texts).

Using Do Not Disturb mode is not a solution for this problem. While it silence unwanted calls from those not on my allowed list, it also silences all texts and emails and other alerts I may want to receive, even from my allowed list.

On Android, there is an app called Blacklist that allows you to block calls from everyone not on your contact list, diverting them straight to voicemail, but allowing everything else through. It's a great feature, but there's nothing similar for iphone.

I'm not a techie, so any jailbreak type solutions aren't for me.

So, could I do this to kill off unwanted calls on an iphone 6?

1) Create a silent ringtone, silent alert tone, and a no-vibrate, and use these as my default settings. This way, when unknown calls come in, I won't hear them or feel them and they will go to voicemail.

2) Go into my contacts, and then create a vibrate, alert, and ringtone for each person. (Yes, it's a hassle to do everyone, but I'd do it if need be.)

Would this solve my problem and have things set-up the way I want them, which is unknown numbers get silenced and everything else gets through?

Are there any downsides I haven't thought of? And how does one create or find silent ringtones and alerts and no vibrate anyway? (and can more than one caller have the same alert and ringtones, i.e., using 'chimes' or whatever for all of my contacts?)

sounds like it would work

keep in mind jailbreaking is not difficult especially now its as simple plugging in and hitting start

I'm 52 years old and barely have the mechanical ability to figure out how to open a window. I don't think this 'jailbreak' thing is in my future…

No downsides to my plan though, huh? I'm trying to figure out the various angles here, but don't see any problems with my scheme yet.

EDIT: Trying out a silent ringtone app right now. Will report back on whether it works for my purposes or not.

So far, so good. silenced a couple of junk phone calls today while allowing everything else to get through. One call came while I was listening to a podcast on the earbuds, and things went silent for awhile until the call ended, which is not as good as that android app that immediately kills off the call, but that's a relatively minor drawback compared to the plusses here.

It's also nice that this silent ringtone I bought can be used as a vibrate only alarm clock, which is something I also wanted.

I'll see how things go in the next few days, but seems to be working so far.

Hey OP - your solution is the same way I've worked around avoiding spam calls... silent ringtone as default with contact-specific ringtones for the calls I do want to receive. Not ideal but the best I can do for now - can't jailbreak even if I wanted to because of an employer-mandated app that won't work on a jailbroken device.

The only minor annoyance I've had is similar to yours - if a spam call comes in while I'm in the car, my radio silences while the phone is "ringing" (silently) over the bluetooth connection.

I do miss the blacklist capability of Android, but that's about all... other than that, I'm LOVING my new 6+.

Please check back in a few days with results and also the name of which silent ringtone/app you used.

I will.

Sounds like we're doing the same thing indeed. Let's hope we don't discover any downsides we haven't thought of yet.

Doesn't do anything for robo-callers. Or politcal callers. Or non-profits.

Correct. I'm already on the Do not Call list. It doesn't help. Plus, my problem is doubly worse since I have my home phone forwarded to my cell. Two sets of junk calls...

I was hammered with robo political calls leading up to the elections sometimes 5 or 6 a night. And the worst part is I can't answer and tell them to stop calling me.

I was getting a dozen or more a day on my landline (thankfully not on my cell) and let them all go to my answering machine (never left a message), afterward Googling the Caller ID numbers to find out which bottom feeder was calling each time. Political calls from states I've never lived in, calling to "remind" me to vote for their Party (GOP, I'm talking about you.) Bah.

Normally, I ignore obvious trolling calls but lately I have been answering and requesting they no long call me. This has worked quite well and the number of unwanted calls is way down.

I was really hoping to answer the political calls and happily inform them that by wasting my time and cramming their ads down my throat I would certainly not vote for their candidate. Their damn auto calls took away this pleasure too.

Where I live, if you answer and they discover there's a real person answering, the calls increase at an alarming and overwhelming rate. Sending it to the machine at least prompts the robo-dialer to recognize the electronic answerer and the call terminates. Until the next fool calls...

I can see a downside to the silent ringing. What if you leave a car to be fixed and they call you to update or tell you it's fixed. There's no way you'll know all the possible phone numbers they could use to call you. Same with any other business that needs to call you back and they don't have a single unique number that is already in your contacts list.

Yep - that IS a problem. I've missed a few calls for job interviews because of this... the best I can do is listen to my voicemails ASAP after they come in and then add the incoming call # to my contacts if it's someone I want to hear from again.

I would port your number to google voice and get new number and let google voice handle rejections of unwanted calls. I have pbx box running of pogoplug and it has lenny that takes time from unwanted callers.

Yup. I ancitipate this will happen….

And this would be one part of my solution. The other part is to change your ringtone if you're expecting a call from a number you're not sure about. I did this type of thing on the Android Blacklist app (temporarily changed the settings), and it worked fine. That said, I'm sure I'll forget to do it from time to time and miss some calls.

Still, having the occasional call I want to receive go straight to voicemail seems a small price to pay for killing a few nuisance calls every day. Over a year's time, we are talking about a thousand phone calls. A thousand times I won't to have to fumble for the phone. A thousand less interruptions.

You lost me at "port".:)

Google voice is an option. It has built in screening capabilities so you know who is calling and can decide to accept the call or let it go to voice mail.

What do you mean "you know who is calling" and can "decide" to accept the call or let it go to voicemail? Isn't that what everyone has with any old phone with caller ID?

A few days using this method now, several junk calls killed, no downsides yet.

Good for you! Which silent ringtone app did you settle on?

It's called "Silent iphone - quiet alert and ringtone" and the icon is lavender. (There are similar ones offered). It seems like it could be the best 1.29 I've ever spent.
