So Amazon claims they have 20% of the "tablet market". What does that translate to? And how would anyone verify that. Amazon never gives out sales figures. Why can't they just release figures like Apple does? Everything we've seen so far are guesstimates from Wall Street analysts.

I thought it was actually 20% of the "android tablet" market that I read ... Which is a big difference, and that's not just Kindle Fire HD, but Kindle Fire & Kindle Fire HD lines combined (much like the iPad marketshare if for all models (iPad 2/3) combined not per model.

Before the iPad Mini was announced I was planning on getting my sister one for Christmas but not for $329. So instead I'm buying my sister a Kindle Fire HD for Christmas today. :)
Get your sister the nexus 7 instead. Amazons skin is not that good and its much more limited in app selection. Also offers a much more complete experience and will be supported for many years.

I see the words "may" and "estimate". That's nothing official from Amazon. But for whatever reason they seem to be able to get away with it. I mean they lost money this quarter, said zilch on their investor call and yet the stock goes up 5% the next day.

I gotcha so you're not buying into their numbers. OK here's the official Amazon sales stat. They only sold one Kindle Fire HD and it was to me. I have proof and so do they. So it's Apple 55+ million iPads and 1 for Amazon. :)

Yup i'm aware of that. I got it on both my iPad's, Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, PS3, XBOX 360 and soon to be Nexus 7. It's all tied together and more seamless and optimized on the Kindle Fire HD. ;)
And you can do new movie rentals on apple tv/the iPad.. Apple won't have that on any other operating system :)

I have an Amazon Prime account so I have a nice selection to choose from for free including TV shows and books. :)

No, I go with official numbers from the companies themselves. Well...unless its Andy Rubin or Eric Schmidt giving us som crazy number about millions of android activations a day. :p

Fire at $199 or mini at $329, for my wallet that's a no brainer.

Kid wants an iPad for Christmas and unwrapping the box finds a Fire?

Just tell them what a great deal it is.

Any kid that WANTS product A but gets product B and complains about it has bigger issues than getting the wrong product. My kids WANT lots of things, what they get they appreciate to the fullest and often times see the wisdom of their parents through smart choices which aren't always the most popular.

I played with the Kindle Fire HD at Best Buy today and it's a nice, well built tablet but you can't convince an Apple snob of that.

I used one a bit today, and yes, it's a decent tablet, but if the iPad is the Majors, the Fire is still stuck playing AA ball. I don't care that what the screen specs said; to my eyes it looked pretty poor at rendering text - especially in landscape orientation, and like every other 7" 16:9 tablet, there is virtually no content visible in the browser so it's like peeking at the web through a slit.

The discounted price doesn't seem quite as good when you consider the entire experience or take into account that the money saved up front is entirely wiped out at resale.

You missed the point but father knows best.

I've used a Kindle Fire extensively before, and I loved it but for me it's the iPad-exclusive apps that get me going Apple.

Amazon's tablet exists as a good option if all you want to do is consume media. I actually thought their sales would decline after the iPad mini announcement, but I guess the starting price really is that big of a deal..

No I got your point, a kid wants something and you get something else based on value, it doesn't change the image in the kids mind and you cannot explain the value point to them. I was just saying, sometimes kids need to have an adjustment on wants, needs and values.

Apple does a great job of creating want or turning that into need, maybe better than any other company.
