It is far too limited to be considered a tablet
So far it seems most people are comparing it to the iPad and also stating that this tablet is the first real competitor to apple.

Like apple, Amazon got their ducks in a row with content, they have their own app store, they have books, media and other content. The tablet is running android so its not too limited.

Overall it appears that Amazon hit this one out of the park.

All I really want from a tablet is to surf the web, watch movies and videos (Youtube, Vimeo, etc), and read my work-related PDFs and textbooks. That's it. If it does that, then I'd consider the Fire a "real" tablet. What else does it need to do to be considered a proper tablet?

I don't need a $500+ device to do that, so this looks perfect. Too bad I'm not in the US.

It's a "real tablet" if one has bought / pre-ordered / wants one, and it is "not a real tablet" if one has bought its major competitor. :p This is loosely like the situation with Santa Claus, where I will continue to believe he is real as long as I wake up on Christmas Day and find presents. :)

After that...

Massive, sustained sales. Something other tablet manufacturers aren't experiencing. Otherwise, it's just another Xoom/Playbook/TouchPad dud.

Amazon doesn't need massive sustained sales. If they can continue the positive sales that they've been experiencing then it will be successful.

They revolutionized online shopping and eReading. Now they're attempting to make a mark on a market that has been dominated by only Apple for the past 2 years and look to be making a damn good job of it.

Huh?

The device is not even shipping yet, nor has it spent any time in the hands of anyone but very limited, guided reviewers.

Damn good job of what, exactly?

Selling the Fire at a loss, Amazon will only be successful with the device if people use it to purchase Amazon content - and do so at higher volumes than they would without the Fire as a display device for that content.

It's a high risk proposition and will take at least a year to measure success.

I really don't understand your mentality on this subject. To you it doesn't seem to matter if the product is good or not, you just care about how many units sell as if that is the only metric of value in determining worthiness.

It's the same formula they have applied to the success of the Kindle, I don't see why it won't apply to the new Fire. From what I have read so far, the component cost on the KF doesn't quite indicate that they will be loosing money on each one, but they certainly won't be making a 100% margin like Apple does.

In light of the Kindle, the eco-system they have, the price and the positive response it has had, they look to be making a good job of it. I never said they had done yet.

Weeks before the first units ship is a little early judge success...

Okay. Let me put it this way. Let's say the GalaxyTab or the HP Slate is currently at the same stage of development/release as the Kindle Fire. Which one would you credit most worthy as a real contender to the iPad?

Apple were the first people to effectively "get it right". No-one else achieved this. Now Amazon (*ahem*, excuse me while I use some capital letters and a bold font this time,) LOOK to be getting it right. I never said they had done or will do. But at the moment, if the GalaxyTab or HP Slate were announced on the same day as the Kindle Fire was, I'd be putting my £ on the Kindle Fire being the most of a success.

Get it now?

I understand what you are saying, however it's based entirely on the fact this is Amazon and nothing else.

The Fire may in fact be a great tablet, however even fanboys should wait until its actually shipping to herald the success of the product.
