This article points out thorns of the ad campaign, but I am beginning to think KitKat is perhaps a supremely brilliant move.

  • KitKit is just a version nickname, much like the cat series is to OS X (look at system profile, you only see the version number, never the code name).
  • KitKat is really a knock at Apples naming scheme, Kat, Cat, Big Cats.
  • KitKat is known and loved by billions more world wide, unlike Key Lime Pie (the original proposed name) which is small.
  • KitKat is the food of Google, or at least a popular one the staff reach for.
  • The branding can be so popular that every time someone sees KitKat, they think Android.
  • KitKat is an ancient product, a level of familiarity that can rub off to Android.

Except for bunch of snide and snarky jokes, IMHO I think it is a major win all around for Google.

Come to think of it, why doesn't Apple name its iOS like it does with OS X?
Oh, and OS 10.9 "Mavericks"?
Mavericks? Really??

This what I think of when Mavericks is used.
