KOTOR has some problems with Vista. It can be fixed by downloading a DLL and adjusting some settings, etc. but it will take a small bit of work. You can find out about it with a search. I think you have to lower the graphics settings too because some alias functions might crash it on Vista too.

Yay!

Brad, I think I love you. I have been wanting to play KOTOR again and have been scouring the internet to see if it will work on my intel iMac. If you can get it to run smoothly, I may even ask you to marry me!

KOTOR = best game ever. Can't wait. :D

Dunno what Mac you have, but if it's got a Radeon X1300/X1600 or an Nvidia 7xxx/8xxx, the UB out there now should be pretty smooth. Ditto for most PowerPC Macs, AFAIK.

Intel iMac 20' 2.4Ghz Aluminium (2007) with RadeonHD2600! The patch you're working on should cover this model as I understand it?

If I recall correctly the game didn't support the widescreen on my Macbook Pro, so that turned me off right away.

It doesn't support widescreen on the PC either (aside from stretched, which the Mac also does). It has resolution-specific UI layouts and we don't have an editor to create our own, unfortunately.

Ah thats right. Too bad there isn't a way to turn off stretching and have it just add black bars or something, turned me off it right away. Never went past the menu (but I already beat it on Xbox).

I believe you that you never made it past the main menu because you can choose stretching right in the resolution list in the "Graphics" menu. The resolutions are duplicated in the list with "(stretched)" after them. This has been a feature of the Mac port since we first shipped it back in 2005, and I added it specifically to address this particular shortcoming - a Mac-only feature, if you will.

Did you really pay money for this and ditch it after such a cursory look? ;)

It should but it isn't. It's jerky and unstable.

Here's a fun fact; back before I got my MBP in 2006 I used to play KOTOR on a PowerBook G4. Interestingly, I could turn the settings up to max and suffer no loss in speed.

The punch line: Speed was just plain terrible to begin with. Turning things down didn't change anything so I figured I might as well play in relative luxury.

Game has arrived...I played it a great deal yesterday! What a game (Can't believe I didn't play it before!!!). That said, it seems to CTD a WHOLE lot (Saving frequently now...). At one point of the game going into a certain area, I couldn't get it to load without a CTD every single time. At that point, I installed the Universal Binary patch for Intel Machines. That seemed to clear it up quite a bit, but I did have two other CTD's after the fact. Overall though, despite the few hickups, what an enjoyable game!

Actually, I am about to play KOTOR again, too. I have the 2GHz unibody now, running Leopard. I have joined the pre-pre-pre-hype that is gathering around BioWare's MMO "The Old Republic".

Brad, you sound somewhat influential in the gaming industry. How would you go about making TOR interesting for Apple?
Every now and then, Apple seem to make efforts to stabilize the residual gaming platform that is Mac OSX.

OK, help me out then: on what Mac config is it poor - specifically, what video card are you running it on? Also, if you're using it in Snow Leopard, say so as there is a known issue that we'll be fixing there related to performance (the same issue that affects the Macs released since the KOTOR patch came out).

KOTOR on boot

hey guys this is my first post and I joined this forum because i needed an answer specifically on this topic

I bought star wars best of PC a while back and now when I install KOTOR on windows 7 (bootcamp through leapord) I go to play the game and it says "insufficient 3d hardware detected" or something like that. I analyzed my computer and the only test i didn't pass was the TnL test, for which it says No.

I have a black macbook running windows 7 and leapord. I have the intel GMA 950 chipset and an 80 gig partition for windows with about 200 gigs for my mac partition.

What do I do so I can play this with the other games in the pack? Am i better off getting a mac copy? Or is there something I can do so I can play these games on windows?

A few years ago, after watching my friend play KOTOR on his PC, I decided to give it a try. I have a Quicksilver 2002 Mac, with 10.4.11. Unfortunately, the game is nearly unplayable. Often, when I command a character to walk forward, it will run off in some random direction and get stuck in a corner. Sometimes it won't respond to the command at all.

One time while in the Grove on Dantoine, after a combat one of my characters was magically on top of the nearby mesa. No way to get him down, nor get out of the area.

I don't know if this is a bug in the program or a conflict with some other software, or what. I may be getting a 2009 Mac Mini soon, and might consider trying the game again. Given my past experience with it though, maybe, maybe not. :(

This is directly related to performance. If your framerate drops below 8 fps on a regular basis, movement gets wacky. You don't mention what video card you had, but it's not hard to imagine this being an issue on certain G4s.

It should run like a champ on that. Also, you paid money for KOTOR, so why not try it, right?

That sounds bizarre, that framerate would affect the basic controls in such a manner. But as you say this is a known issue, I'll believe you. (And yes, the video card is certainly sub-minimal, ATI 7500. ;) )

As for trying again, it was just such a painful experience the 1st time. Of course, I have to win the auction on the Mini 1st...

Thanks for the feedback.

Well, framerate is the visible symptom. The game is really running the simulation at fewer frames than it is expecting, so the math it does to calculate the player's expected movement fails in a bad way, resulting in the player movement being either extremely large or extremely small. This manifests itself by the player zapping across rooms or appearing stuck in one spot in a walking animation.

OK, that I can understand. But sometimes, it would simply not respond to any movement commands in any way. Often, switching to another character and back would let it move, but not always. Sometimes I would command forward and it would go off some other direction. Very frustrating.

If I win my auction, I'll be sure to let you know how things go.

Would it be worth it to run KOTOR on the mac in my sig. I really want to try this game out (the videos on youtube look awesome) but considering my machines age. I try to always get a second opinion before buying.

Yes, the ATI r300-class (of which the Radeon 9700 is a member) should run it just fine. That was our 'high-end' Mac card when we were doing the original port. I can also personally attest to having played it on a similar PowerBook G4 and having no problems.
