If you handle and spend some time with a Galaxy Note, you'll realize they're not as big as people make them out to be. A lot of people who say, OMG, IT'S TOO BIG haven't even held one before. (insert joke here)

My favorite is when people try to say that apple doesn't need a phablet or larger screened phone because they sell the iPad mini as if they were anywhere close in size and pocket-ability.

Note II vs iPad Mini. (couldn't find one of the note III vs iPad mini but dimensionally the note III is the same as the note II)

That is not a note 2 in that picture.

But don't forget! Apple considers the iPad Mini usable with one hand:

In the official iPad Mini video, Ive explicitly says "...you can still pick it up and easily use it with one hand..." Easily. Earlier in the video, they make the distinction that you can hold it with one hand, but at the 2:10 mark, they're clearly talking about using it with one hand.

Video is here: http://www.apple.com/ipad-mini/overview/#video-ipad-mini-features)

Going by that reasoning, any device can be used one handed, yet according to their iPhone 5 campaign, one of the main talking points is that anything larger than a 4" smartphone is unusable with one hand.

So either the iPad Mini can be used one handed (like it says in the video) and therefore so can other smaller smartphones, or nothing above the iPhone 5 screen size (like it says in the iPhone campaigns) can be used one handed in which case the iPad Mini video is a lie.

Apple marketing for the win.

I dunno, somewhere in West Texas
Nope. I live in Korea and the pricing of electronics is ridiculous here. Laptops, cellphones, and even cars are more expensive here than back in the states. Not just electronics but clothes too.

Samsung, LG, Hyundai, etc are more expensive here than America. Pretty damn ironic.

Just an example when you buy a cellphone here. The price of a Note3 is roughly 700-800 US dollars. That's on a 2 year contract. You sign a 2 year contract and you might get a hundred or 2 hundred bucks off.

So you end up paying the remaining 500-600 dollars in monthly installments for 24 months. Plus you're paying your monthly usage fee.

Biggest ripoff market.

I can attest to this. When I was stationed in Korea, all the major brands were very expensive. Like when you go to the Nike shop in Seoul, a pair of Jordans came out to be more expensive than back in the States., and this was back in 95' when I was stationed at Camp Casey in Uijeongbu. Now the fake stuff you could get dirt cheap.

The survey must prove that 41% of South Korean phone owners do not have a problem carrying a phablet around with them. I must admit that when I first moved from a iP4S to a SGS3 it seemed massive, within a day I was used to the size and would not go back to smaller.:)

Even the LG G2 felt huge to me at first. But now when I hold my wife's iphone 5 and look at the screen I literally laugh out loud at how pathetic it looks. I can't stand to look at it more than a few seconds.

Phablets are extremely popular in Eastern Asia – but why is that?
http://www.androidauthority.com/southeast-asia-phablets-283826/

A big reason is because most people find them easier to carry here. The reason for that is because most people don't have a car.

So, almost every man here in East Asia carries some sort of bag when they go out, from messenger bags to man purses. You'll find that they won't pocket their large phone, or even their house keys. And of course, women always have a bag on them as well.

The iPhone is still immensely popular here though, fwiw.

Most people don't have a car? Many guys carry bags? These are all assumptions.

Want to know why big screen phones are so popular in East Asia (especially Korea)? Its because of digital entertainment.

Soooo many people here watch tv and movies on their phones here. That's even why the phones in Korea havea DMB tuner and come with an extra battery. So people can enjoy their media.

And watching a movie or TV on a tiny screen is not going to cut it.

Yea the internet is a "trend." That is what phablets are about more than phone calls. The compact phones were all about phone calls, and a little numeric pad texting with the smallest device possible. We will never return to that era anymore than we will return to rotary dialed phones.

Michael

The Internet is not a trend. The Internet is an invention like the wheel, so it's here to stay, but its use is going to vary over time.

As for now it is cool to surf the web on your phone, but in the future it might be more google now centric (for example). You don't need such a big screen to ask your phone some questions.

This is just an example, I don't know what will happen for sure. But screens didnt got larger cause of people's demand. People's demand got bigger, because larger screens came to the market. And just how that happened, at some point smaller phones are going to return to the focus.

My points are assumptions but yours isn't?

We're both offering anecdotal evidence. But what we both said is true. People here in Taiwan are constantly watching movies and TV on their devices while on public transportation as well.

If I were a woman with a handbag, I'd get a Note 3.

As a guy, it doesn't currently fit my lifestyle - I'm more music focused, as opposed to reading/films/commuting.

But that could change.

Yes this is an assumption. Whats around here? East Asia, Taiwan? That's a very large and vague assumption. Around here most people own cars.

In Taiwan the figure is at 32 cars to every 100 people. That means roughly 68 percent of people don't own a car. Here in Taipei there are more privately owned scooters than privately owned cars, if you dispute that then it's because you've never been here.

In Japan it's at 51 percent ownership. Not really a majority. In Korea it's 37 percent. In Hong Kong it's 7.7 percent. In China it's 8.5 percent. You can read about it here:

That's why I asked what do you mean "over here." Because over here is very broad. And yes, I've never been to Taipei.

I could have sworn this thread was titled "Korea 41% of phones are phablets."

And let's say for a minute even if we were talking about all of Asia in general. To assume that people prefer phablets because they don't drive cars as much and the guys carry bags is ridiculous. So you're saying a backpack or bag is mandatory if you own a phablet? Or, if you drive a car a a small screen choice is ideal. And if you take public transportation a phablet is the ideal choice.

How are you going to watch movies and play games? On a tiny 3.5 inch screen?

Yes the tiny cellphone craze was legit at the time because technology had evolved so much that there was no need for large Zack Morris phones that weighed a ton.

I had one of those huge brick phones. It weighed a ton and the screen was a 2 color 1.5 inch screen. What were the functions of this beautiful brick? Just to make calls.

So why have a brick of a phone when you could have a super tiny phone that weighed a feather, and could do the same functions that the brick phone could.

Unless foldout/foldable screens and holographic displays appear in smartphones, the tiny cellphone trend is not coming back.

There's a big reason why phones are getting bigger and bigger.

I'm saying that a lot of Asian dudes carry a man bag. I never needed one in America because I could throw stuff in my car. But here, a lot of guys who don't have a car use a man purse.

If you have one of those, it's easier to tote around a bigger phone or even a tablet every day. If you don't have to worry about your phone fitting in your pants, then you'd be more inclined to buy a bigger phone. This doesn't go for everybody, but there will be people who feel this way.

Note, this pertains to warm weather situations. If it's jacket or coat time then it's easier to pocket a phablet.
