Lack of games..

So whilst im here typing aware on my MacBook im contemplating the toy im buying myself this Christmas, which will more than likely be a MBP.

Figured i'd buy myself some games for Christmas too, yet to my utter disappointment COD Black Ops for example is not available.

In fact, hardly any games are available!

Whats the easiest solution? Bootcamp? Or...?
 
Boot Camp, as you run Windows and the games you want to play, at full hardware capability. Running Windows as a VM would be too slow, as there are additional layers between games and hardware.

Or you could get yourself a "cheap" gaming rig running Windows. Or a dedicated game console, the SEGA ones I believe are a good choice.

Boot camp probably sounds best i think. Not really into consoles too much, they're good and all, but i dont want one enough to go and spend money on one! Have plenty of friends with them.

So is this it, we're resigning ourselves to the fact we're going to have to use boot camp?

I don't know, who "we" is, but if you want to play games like Call Of Duty 7 and want to use a Mac and don't have access to a non-existing Mac OS X version of such games, then Boot Camp is the only viable option if you want to play smoothly.
 
You could just try installing on bootcamp, but playing through OSX through the whole wrapper thing.
 
I think its funny how people can't bring themselves to say "use Windows" ... its dirty I guess... it sounds better to say "use Bootcamp" even though bootcamp isn't what your really running to play the game, your just running Windows like any other PC.

You think it's because people can't "bring themselves to say Windows"?

Most everyone here has a Mac. The only way to install windows natively is to use Boot Camp. There are other ways to install Windows that are less effective for games. Pretty simple.

None of us are pretending it's not Windows we are using. Stop trying to stir up controversy that doesn't exist.

I don't know what the "reality" is, then...have always played good games on my Mac, even if the selection is not as varied as the craptastic PC market.

COD1, 2 and 4 are here; SC 2, Civ 5 is available, a LOT of Steam-powered games such as L4D, Counter Strike and HL; the Diablo series; WoW; Riddick; lots of Star Wars games; FlatOut2; most of the GTA series, not to mention the best set of casual games around...is it really that bad? I don't think so.

It is reality. The truth is, there are more titles for Windows then there are for Mac. Always has been and it should be that way for quite a long time to come. But I guess if you set your aim low and think that the available games are the best games then I guess ignorance truly is bliss.

Two words: HALO:Reach

In short, if you buy a console buy it for the games you want. Selection means nothing if it won't play the ones you want.

I don't have time for games, so the ones I have are more than sufficient - call me ignorant if you wish, but it's more than obvious that a great part of the Windows PC titles is just crap or renaming of existing engines...besides, if you are REALLY into gaming, just buy a console. The selection is WAY more varied than for personal computers, as well as the related performance optimization - just check the aisles for yourself.

I have all of the consoles. Plenty of titles on there. Just as there are plenty of titles on Windows that are not available on the Mac or Console.

But yeah, only the best games get released on the Mac. If a title is not on the mac then it must be just plain old, reused, tired engine, PC crap.

Even better is a reply to a post saying that the Mac has everything YOU need in gaming and then responding later that you don't have time for gaming.

That was my solution back in 2006 when Gears of War came out and I realized that I NEEDED a console to experience games to a full.

But I realized after four years of console gaming that games on my mac (halo, unreal tournament 2004, call of duty 1, Quake 4), I tended to stay with much more than individual console games. Factors like mods and customizability affected that too, but I just played Call of Duty 1 more than any other Call of Duty that I've ever played on the console... and I never even touched the multiplayer.


I'd say go with bootcamp.

controversy? its just an observation.. using slightly incorrect wording so that it sounds better in the Mac world. I said "use Windows" not just "Windows"

Using Bootcamp doesn't play a single game, ok...? Using bootcamp lets you install Windows, using Windows lets you play the game. My observation I made, just because I find it humorous. Many Mac users find people telling them to "run Windows" for their program as bad as saying "buy a PC" ... Using an Apple software word "Bootcamp" instead of actually telling people to Run Microsoft Windows is funny to me... looking at it in a psychological way. I never tried to stir up any controversy. I'm not saying to not use it, I'm just remarking over the common word choice used all over the web, not just here. Forums are about conversation, and thats all it is.

You are either stupid or stupid, so here is my quote again:

What I said above is completely compatible with the fact that I have little time for that hobby...so please refrain from misquoting others; better yet, go back to "all" your consoles and have some fun because you seem to be needing it.

So you result to point blank insults directed towards me and not just in general. That is quite the reliable defense. This guy is making me mad. I am going to insult him.

I didn't misquote, I pressed the quote button which quotes you verbatim. But surely that is another good defense.

Anyway. Back to OP. He should use bootcamp with Windows to increase his game selection. Because the reality of the situation is, there are less choices with Mac and you cannot drag a console every where you go.

Bootcamp... A fancy marketing name for "turn your Apple hardware into a regular PC by installing Windows on it". Because, you know, that's all that it is. It's a drivers collection for Windows and an idiot-safe interface to resizing your hard disk partition and launching Windows instead of OS X. Big deal. But in the end, you will be using that PC all those Mac zealots warned you about - it just has an Apple logo on it.

Anyway. If you want to play games, buy an Xbox 360 AND install Windows on your Mac. You might also want to add a PS3 to that mix, so you can play all of the interesting exclusive titles for each platform.

that's not just todays problem. it's been a long time. mac game is always shortage all the time because it doesn't make any money. so developers don't make mac version or mac game barely. don't expect. it will be continued this way no matter what. especially, if you want very recent game, just run bootcamp, install PC version. it's the best way you can do now. or just buy xbox 360. because Steam seems to make effort for mac platform recently? not really. some games I want that they don't sell. you don't see need for speed hot pursuit, Tron evolution. I doubt that they will even sell dragon age 2, dead space 2, mass effect 3? I don't think so because recently EA changed policy for game distribution.
