there is the refurbished option too. I feel their refurbished ones works, looks, performs just like new ones. I got mine refurb for a discount very recently b/c there was no sales. I might return it if the newest ones is a million times better. But I actually like the look of the white bezels and home button. touch ID works well for this large iPad.

I hope you’re right, 749 is easier to swallow. That’s their typical price for a lot of products too. iPhone XR, Apple Watch stainless, I could see it being priced there. Will they keep the current models around? Maybe. They haven’t done that previously with iPad but they’re doing it more and more with iPhone, Watch and Mac.

That's the current price for the 10.5" 64GB wifi plus cellular (which I need).

If they wanted at least another £130 on top of your suggested price to add cellular then we're looking at about £900 which is pretty steep. Many people don't seem to put the prices of these devices into perspective, considering their true worth and what else could be bought for these not insignificant amounts of money.

As sort of suggested above, they may also play the reduced memory options dirty trick in order to upsell too. I'm good with 64GB.

Apple's raising pricing on base models but if you tend to upgrade to higher capacities, the prices may not actually vary by much.

I paid the ff (all are LTE models):
$829 iPad 3 64GB
$929 iPad 4 128GB
$879 iPad Pro 9.7 128GB
$879 iPad Pro 10.5 256GB (skipped this but here just as a point of comparison)

Also:
$1229 iPad Pro 12.9 (1st gen) 256GB
$1029 iPad Pro 12.9 (2nd gen) 256GB
$1229 iPad Pro 12.9 (2nd gen) 512GB

On a side note, paid $849 for iPhone 6 Plus 64GB back in 2014. It's finally getting upgraded to iPhone XR 128GB for $799.
What did you notice the most when going from the iPad4 to the 2018 iPadPro?

You’re referring to the opportunity cost, and it is something that haunts me with a lot of these products. I realize I could probably buy a refrigerator instead of an iPad. I’ve never bought a cellular iPad though, because it adds so much to the price and it’s just not something I’ve ever needed.

There's no 2018 iPad Pro yet...

I have both 2016 Pro 9.7 and 2017 Pro 12.9, though. Performance was greatly improved. The display upgrade was pretty nice. Speakers but I typically use headphones anyway. Also, fewer Safari tab reloads and out of memory crashes. Even now, I have no speed complaints with the Pro 9.7 (or really, any device with A8X/A9 or higher). Alas, battery wasn't as good as iPad 4.

I actually went from 128GB iPad 4 to 16GB Air (original). Size and weight were greatly improved. I had originally wanted a 128GB mini 2 but I was traveling overseas and the mini 2 wouldn't have made it for the flight. Got the 16GB thinking I'd replace it when I got back to the US but ended up keeping it. The 16GB storage though, was an absolute exercise in frustration. Really, by the time 2013 rolled around, 32GB should have been base storage considering retina display and how huge apps have gotten. Couldn't even do OTA update to iOS 8 (needed 5GB free?) without nearly emptying it.

Nah. I know what can be bought with it (heck, AAPL shares for one, BRK.B, VOO or VTI if one wants an pre-diversified stock/ETF holding). I just consider the utility and enjoyment derived from the iPad to outweigh other things those funds could've gotten me.

For my personal computing needs, the iPad makes up 90% of my usage so it certainly earns its keep better than, say, my iPhone.
