What do you guys make out of Apple's decision to give a Landscape Cemara Position in the new 10th generation iPad but not on iPad Pro ?

is it because of the thought, that people who buy entry level iPads mostly use for this gimmicky features more ? Camera Videos Call or Mere Browsing and Taking Pictures etc...etc... And Pro users on the iPad Pro are some geeky Einstein kind of guys who don't get into this Juvenile act ?

Either they are preparing a more ambitious redesign next year, or they somehow have trouble to engineer the face ID components in landscape. The former is the more probable answer in my opinion

Video calls are gimmicky? I would have thought that a "pro" user would be more likely to be using the iPad for video calls. So they'd have more reasons to want the landscape FF camera. Incredible decision to move it on the 10th gen but not the pro. I might have upgraded by 2018s for this alone. Ugh.

I just heard Dan from Macrumors says on his Video posted on YouTube some minutes back that he thinks his best guess is, some mechanism of FaceTime Components still not permitting them to put the camera in Landscape Mode on the Pro.

To me this screams of a big redesign coming in the next 18 months or so - an iterative update today and not even bothering to move the camera when it’s on the new base iPad? This will be a relatively short generation I suspect. Although seeing that they didn’t even let that new iPad use the latest Apple Pencil should tell me I’m giving them far too much credit.

Really not sure why they even updated the Pro’s this time. They should be embarassed. Hopefully, just means real update is in Spring like they used to be next year.

How can there be a big redesign for a rectangular slab? All they can do is shift the camera orientation and change internal components.

Maybe they will release the iPad Ultra next year when it comes with an optional touchscreen keyboard accessory, giving it a clamshell design instead of that magic keyboard crap. All for $1999.

It's frustrating that the entry iPad has essentially the number 1 new feature that many pro users are asking for. Especially when we're now unlikely to see new iPad Pros before 2024.

Yeh that’s fair - I’m not expecting a radically new shape. I do think that to add MagSafe, whatever the new 4-pin connector is for (?MagSafe), getting landscape camera and pencil charger to work near each other, mini-LED all round etc may well require a big redesign to achieve. I may be wrong of course but not moving the landscape camera when you’ve been changing nothing else for 18 months = placeholder IMO.

Why? If they have the chips and can do a spec bump why not?

The next update will likely be in spring. Spring 2024.

Because it's been 18 months, just like they did 18 months after the iPad pro 2018 with A12Z in 2020. They won't wait more than that. Back then they added more RAM and a new camera, this time it's M2 and essentially nothing else.
Next pro will be in 2024. According to rumors it should move ot a new type of OLED that will allow it to be thinner and lighter, a new connector for more than just charging and using the keyboard and there should be a new larger model by then too. Also M3 should be a much bigger jump thanks to 3nm and ArmV9.

If I had to guess, it's because the 10th generation iPad is a different design (thicker than the iPad Air 4/5) and so they had to make equipment/tooling to build it (or make modifications) whereas the M1/M2 iPad Pro models share the same dimensions and, to avoid costs, just kept the same equipment/tooling (no tweaks). Plus, it gives them an excuse to sell the next generation iPad Pro with that change.

What concerns me more, and frankly it's unacceptable, is that an iPad Air 2 from 2014 literally has better display technology than a 2022 10th generation iPad (laminated vs. unlamintated display). Just, wow.

That last part is a bit of a sticking point, yeah. I use an Air 2 for light duty tasks and there’s really not a better replacement - the Pro 9.7 has the same 2GB of RAM and is barely faster.

That said, it *is* cheaper to repair, and since these are still education targeted, I get it.

Yup, I get that point, as well. Just not sure many education departments would see the 10th gen as a better value than the 9th gen, considering it's almost 3 9th gens for every 2 10th gens.

The 2016 9.7" iPad Pro did however, at least have the P3 color gamut display. It's a shame the new 10th gen is so far behind. The iPad Air 4 is a much better value. I remember Walmart had them for $399 earlier this year, which just shows how much of a steal that was in hindsight.

They need to leave something for next time. What if landscape camera and OLED display didn't come at the same time lol

Well, if they can do it on the new base model Ipad, I'd assume it's not the camera itself. Maybe it's the location of the charging coils/magnets for the pencil. Which means they'll need to move them or tweak it in some way, which means more opportunity for them to make.....wait for it.....a new Apple Pencil! Same capabilities, but only works on the next model.

I see one of two things happening here.

1. I saw rumors start popping up today that Apple will put a foldable screen on the ipads first before they bring it to the phones, basically as a beta design, before they bring it to their main product lines. Target date mentioned was sometime in 2024, So maybe put all engineering efforts into this and make that the next main body redesign. In the mean time, they just needed to come out with something "new" enough now so that the product didn't sit on a 3-4 year refresh cycle.

2. Something wasn't ready for in time for their normal refresh cycle, probably due to supply chain (3 nM, larger screens, etc.), so this is just a temporary place holder because it's easy to implement, is technically new, and it will enough of a refresh to provide a blip in sales until the real thing gets sorted out over the next 6 months or so.

I tend to lean more #2. My reasoning being, we know the Macs are getting pushed, probably for similar reasons on the newer processors. Because the Ipads were always targeted to use the base M2, which has been out for a few months already, and their normal refresh cycle time was up, I think they just put in what they could at this point and punted until they get the other stuff sorted.

Simply because they use the same panels for the pros another year because, duh, but the iPad is redesigned so they had the opportunity to finally change the orientation and experiment with manufacturing on a lower demand product, like they do so often.
It’s simple. Stop asking questions with simple answers.

There will be tons of reasons given for why Apple did this. To me, the simplest explanation is that Apple wants to try and squeeze one more year of charging a massive price for a design that they've been using since 2018. Outside of the cameras, the design is the same and most likely the cost for Apple to produce these has significantly dropped. The only visual external differences between the 2018 to now is the camera module, so Apple is saving a ton of money on using this same basic design over and over again which will now be going on 5 years.

I do think that Apple is making a mistake here. The economy isn't great and I don't think people are going to be willing to pay what they are asking for the Pro models when they are the exact same thing as last years models and not worthy of an upgrade even from the 2018 models.

I would bet that this is the worst performing sales they have in this category in a long, long time.
