I mentioned it in another post, but I was cool about it and felt bad, and they felt bad to have to rigamarole me too...

Plus it became evident that I'm not terrorist material when they saw my white computer with pink keyboard and Hello Kitty desktop.  :D

Yeah, I just let them do there thing and didn't freak out about it. The funny thing is the guy who handled my laptop almost didn't want to bother scanning it again, but one of them said "you really should scan it." <shrug>

Bless

Friends of mine who travel a bit tell me that sandles are easier to go through with... not sure how or why though.

I got yelled at by security when I didn't take my laptop out of it's bag. Good God- they made me feel like a criminal until I pointed out there were no signs alerting me to take it out and no one had said anything. They huffed and grudgingly apologized.

X-rays are only seen as harmful to undeveloped rolls of film you get in the old 35mm cameras.
I sent 3 or 4 rolls of film trough the security scanner at the airport once. They all came out ok.

alright cool, im off to europe tomorrow and just was making sure and stuff.

Found that out the hard way when I stuck a laptop in my luggage to come home for Xmas cause I didn't feel like carrying it for once. Whatever they used WIPED IT CLEAN. Turned on the computer and BOOM "no bootable image detected" :(
Can someone confirm if that will happen if you check your notebooks at the airport? I have 6 notebook computers now and I am thinking about leaving this country soon (if that happens, I will be traveling via plane) and I would certainly take my machines with me when I move. I have a few software which requires the activation schemes and I don't want to get bothered with activation issues outside the country if the notebooks in the checked baggage are zapped strong enough to get their hard drive wiped out (which necessitates the re-installation and activation).

Maybe you should ship the laptops via UPS or something?

Sandals are easy and quick to take off. That's what I wear in the spring and summer when traveling. I just pack a pair of socks in my travel bag because of the freezing cold air next to the window seats (which I fancy).

Getting them out of the country won't be the difficult. I'm thinking you'll have to have your ducks in a row or some good contact to help you with getting them through customs wherever you're going. 6 notebooks will turn some heads, unless you have a way to have those traveling with you help carry them on the plane.

I am more concerned about zapping of the checked baggages which, as the previous poster said, eraised the hard drive content. I can takes those notebooks as my personal effect items with me or via a later flight.

I think I can cram in my 2 AL PBs, 1 iBook, and my Fujitsu Tablet PC in my carry on baggage (possilbe sqeeze in my Ti PB) without accessories, as those notebooks computers are relatively thin.

If someone has gone through the overseas move (from USA to Japan, Hong Kong or EU or from EU, Japan, Hong Kong, or others to USA), please comment if there was a problem. All cargoes are going thorugh some type of screening (X-ray, Gamma ray, and etc) and I want to make sure the items I sent out from USA to Japan (items can be Lacie external HDs) don't get damaged because of those screening.

when i passed through security i didn't take my shoes off.. the lady said i probably "wouldn't make it" haha but then the alarm didn't go off so i said "it must be my lucky day" lol:p and i had my belt on too!

Are you sure you want to lug that around if you're backpacking? Plus, it's a pretty expensive piece of hardware to possible 'loose' or have 'stolen'.

When I flew over the summer, I forgot to take off my belt and left my keys in my pocket and the detector didn't go off. I think detectors are designed to detect larger pieces of metal like a gun or knife, then again, I've seen knives smaller than my car key

Those knifes are now allowed...I feel much safer.

Do you really have a choice? You cannot leave the country without putting them through some type of X-Ray. I would just hope for the best and shove 'em through. Of Course make backups on DVD before hand.

Hmm I will be travelling in march 06 with both my ankle in splints
I wonder if they will ask me to take them off
And yes Vancouver airport has a habit of not so random checks on non-white people, though they do leave the buddhist monks and nuns alone.
I am still debating whether I will be taking my 15" PB with me.
