Thank you, RCAFBrat.

I've taken apart and fixed/added-to several mac laptops. But they're never quite the same afterwards!

So I like the external SSD approach.

I did read this recent post on MacForums ... and it confused me a bit:

"...I suppose if you could find a carrier which accepted a SSD and also had a firewire input, it would speed things up. But that might not be easy to find and could be expensive."

It suggest to me that it might be hard to find a SSD which will work with a Mac mini 2009 Firewire 800 [??]

Not sure what is going on there - perhaps the post was about having more than one device connected (ie second Firewire 800 receptacle to allow peripherals to be daisy-chained)?

Google "SSD enclosure Firewire 800" and you get lots of hits with the OWC Mercury On-The-Go Pro near the top of the list - the $60 US price will have to be factored into your decision although you can probably find less expensive options by spending a little time searching.

Also, check the iFixit guide to see if you want to spend the $60 US on an enclosure or install a bigger SSD for the same price!

Best of luck.

Cheers

Thanks again for your help :)
