Late 2012 Mac Mini Prosumer Review

Here's my setup :

- Mac Mini with the 2.3 ghz processor
- 16 gig ram from Crucial
- 24'' display from Samsung (might change it for a 27'' display)
- ASUS usb 3 external blu-ray burner (use it on my 2012 Macbook Air already)
- Drobo external HDD enclosure
- Logitech K750 wireless solar keyboar for Mac
- Magic track pad

One question : I've connected my Macbook Air on the Samsung display via HDMI. I cannot have the picture to fill the whole screen if I choose the 1080p setting. I always have black bars on each side of the screen. I need to choose the 720p setting to fill the entire screen but then, the image is a little bit blurry. Any suggestion on how to do it in 1080p ? Will I have the same problem with the Mini ?

Sys Preferences>Display>Best for Display

Anyway you should be careful pairing Samsung display with a Mac. The Samsung LED 6000 series that I purchased for thousands of dollars has serious laggy refresh rate that causes an audio out-of-sync when playing movies. I don't have this problem with Sony Bravia 40" display that I bought later on for less than $700.

Quick question for OP. Seeing as you've had the ProBox for a few months now, could you give your impressions? I've been considering getting one for my 2012 iMac. Any issues?


I've seen several reviews saying this unit does not work properly with a 2012 mac with USB 3.0 or with os x 10.8.2 for that matter.

I've seen those reviews, it's strange -- every function of the device works for me. However, there are two minor bugs:

I had to download the program "Keep Drive Spinning" because the Probox likes to nap regardless of OSX Energy Saver settings. I hate drive latency while browsing/picking songs on iTunes. The little program took care of it with ease.

I have the Probox set to shut off when the Mac Mini goes to sleep.
Initially, when I would wake up the Mac, I would get a warning that the drive had not been ejected before sleeping. But, I didn't let that ruin the fun for long. I downloaded unDock. I press one button, the computer ejects both drives, and goes to sleep.

First day I had it, I moved 2 TB of content onto one of the hard drives averaging well over 100 MB/s -- it only took 4.5 hours! I have moved an additional 500 GB since with no problems.

I am very satisfied.
