I honestly thought getting the 10.5 was sensible and the next version would be a minor bump in speed with consistent form factor.

My 10.5 is not going to suddenly get slower.... but I totally want this A12X with minimal bezels!

Awesome! I’m sure these will be $1,000+ if not close to $1,500. The good thing about the iPad though is I feel less inclined to upgrade every year like with the iPhone.

I am wondering how well they will sell with current iPad Pro owners. I love Face ID but it’s different with an iPad. I unlock my iPad with it laying down, quite a few times. The iPad Pro 10.5 isn’t exactly the lightest device so picking it up every time would be a little irritating for some. Right now I’m not picking it up much due to dual wrist injuries so Touch ID is coming in handy right now.

The A12X is likely one reason why Apple waited to release new iPads. Will make the urge bigger to upgrade. I’m keeping my 10.5. I have a feeling the price will be much more than what the 10.5 is priced at. The A10X is still an incredible beast and I still think it’s future proof.

it's not missing, in the first paragraph the article links to an other that mentiones an "ipad2018Fall" in ios 12 code, for comparaison the new iphene XS is refrenced in the same code as "iPhone2018Fall" so I thnik it's safe to assume the new ipad is coming this month or the next one as apple is used to having events in october or november.
march is pretty much reserved for the regular ipad now

Nope. I don’t believe in future proofing, I believe in purchasing devices that serve my needs for a reasonable lifespan of the device (typically a couple of years). The inevitable release of a shiny new design with evolutionary changes isn’t going to immediately negate the relevance of the device currently in my hands. iOS is still going to work well on my 2nd Gen 12.9 for the length of time that I expect it to.

That said, the only thing in the latest leak articles that peaks my interest is the potential for USB-C input/output on the device. Would be great to have the ability to go direct to a display via a USB-C cable . . We shall see.

For years I had been leasing video cards and now I feel like I’m doing that with Apple stuff. The 9.7” iPad Pro with 2 GB became obsolete the moment I got used to the iPhone 8 Plus. The extra speed of the chip and the comfort factor from the extra ram helped to alleviate much of the frustration from the 9.7” I DIDN’T EVEN KNOW EXISTED.

Just took delivery of a 12.9” iPad Pro 2? Because the “headphone jack removed” scared me. But if I think hard about this, I can get around that issue with a decent DAC like a dragonfly (which I’ve never had to do or research or know anything about!)

I’ve a USB-C Mophie 10000mah? I can only priority charge via the included USB-C cable. So while it’s great to charge the battery and the MacBook or the Moto g6, it does nothing for anything lightning. The USB-A will only charge if the pack isn’t being charged. :/

Neither do I, it wasn’t stated in the article but was speculated by others - I just failed to communicate my skepticism.

I agree with you. It’s a smart way to buy. I loved the A10 on the 7+ and still is a phenomenal chip in 2018. The A10X on the 10.5 will receive years of support if Apple continues the iOS 12 trend of making iOS cleaner and more efficient. Plus the 4 gigs of RAM will help.

If this new iPad is indeed OLED without a notch and Face ID is supported with 3 sides, plus the A12X chip, my prediction is the base price (smaller Pro with smallest storage offered, no cellular) will be at least $799. I won’t buy an iPad without cellular so I would have to rob a bank to pay for that model.

Having the A12X alone does not imply a price hike. It's not like with Macs where Apple has to pay hundreds of dollars per-unit to Intel for i7s even when buying in bulk.

All they're paying per-unit for the A12X is the manufacturing cost which is probably like 40 bucks each.

The R&D almost comes for free because they're going to be doing the sibling SoC for the iPhone anyway.

iPad does enjoy long prime age. Its 3.5mm jack could serve you till the end of its life span.

But that processor is still a beast. Unless there is some feature that requires the power of the A12X there is no need for you to upgrade if you don't want to.

That said, if you want to that's totally valid, I'm not casting judgement on your decisions.

A trackpad option in a Smart keyboard would be very nice, sans pointer even if it must be so. Maybe something in the style of the touch part of the ATV controller.

For me, the jump from Lightning to USB C was what gave me this feeling; it made me feel that my game recording setup (that took a while to figure and experiment with) feel dated since with this iPad Pro 3 I can just use a simple USB C to HDMI cable to the game recording device instead of AirPlaying to an Apple TV first. Sure, there may be teething issues with USB C from iPad Pros but I am willing to give it a fair shake. The A12X just sweetened this by just a bit since I agree that the A10X is already one of the strongest SOC on the market.

Totally valid. If there was ever going to be another mini (which I don’t think will happen) I’d drop my 1st gen iPP in a second for the form factor change alone. Everything else would just be an awesome cherry on top.

Yeah come to think of it most of these are indeed cherries on top of a cake (maybe except the USB C part)! I am ok with my iPad Pro 2 too but will need hands on the iPad Pro 3 (or at least firm news) to make the final decision. Alternatively I can just make a shrewd (or foolhardy?) move and go all in on the iPad Pro 3? Am gathering some info and doing my own tests to see if a single iPad Pro 3 is all I need instead of my setup

Well, in fairness it is coming up on 17 months since the current iPad Pro launched, and even that one used the 9 month old (at the time) A10.

Feels more like iPad is getting back on track with iPhone & current SoC. I wonder if we’ll see more consistent annual hardware updates going forward.
