There are two stores within half an hour of me also but they are both closed due to Covid currently. That's why I had to drive down to Illinois to pick one up there instead of waiting for three weeks for an online order. The Mall in Illinois where I picked it up was a ghost town

The malls are open in my state (we have the third-lowest number of infections in the country). I suppose that could change at any time if infections continue to rise. Our Governor has not reinstituted the Stay at Home order that we had this past Spring and Summer though there are times when I wish that he would. If that happens, then everything will be mailorder only.

I ordered a M1 Mini on Launch Day and it should be here later this week. Since then I have decided that I didn't need to worry about thermal issues with the MacBook Air and I found an Apple store about an hour away that had stock on the model I decided to get and picked that up last night. I will be returning the Mini as soon as I receive it.
Funny I was about to do that - pick up at the Apple Store and return the incoming M1 Mini.

However, I just got an update from FEDEX - delivery is today but the M1 Mini is not tracking from China - it's from Southern California!

Strange - how come mine comes in from local instead of everyone else who is tracking theirs from China ???

No idea. Mine shipped from China on Sunday. According to UPS it should have arrived here tomorrow. I just checked the status and it shows it was still in Hong Kong yesterday so I doubt that it would make it on time. I am glad I picked up the air. I am really impressed with it so far

Not for me. My preorder day ordered Mini with 16 gb of ram shipped in time for me to get it on launch day. An entire week before Apple had promised it.

I am 20 minutes from two stores and 30 minutes to a third store. I can order today and pick it up on Saturday. It's typically one to two days to order a preconfigured model. The reason that there are so many stores in my area is that we don't have sales tax in my state and we're on the border with a state that has sales tax. So a lot of their shoppers buy in my state to use in their home state.

A nearby Apple Store is a luxury and it's part of the value equation for owning Apple gear. One of the Apple Stores was five minutes from my former employer which was also handy.

can i haz some tax free

*Sigh* - unfortunately so. I ordered my two configurations at 2:04 EST (Air) and 2:07 EST (Pro), just minutes after they went live. The Air came yesterday and the Pro is now "rescheduled delivery," after sitting in China for 3 days. Likely not coming until Monday. Really annoying and disappointing to my impatient first-world self.

There is also a discrepancy in shipment methods for the two machines, which I thought was quite odd. The Air shipped UPS Worldwide Express Saver while the Pro shipped UPS Worldwide Expedited.

I feel you mate, we have the same situation with iPhones here. Pro Max has delivery dates well into December while my local store has them in stock ready to pick up today.

sorry to hear! i'd just go to the store and pickup the new one and return the other one when it arrives. but that's just me...
Yup, just did that today. Have migration assistant going as we speak. Decided that since this was a placeholder machine until the 16" M1 in 2021, the Air really was as good as the Pro.

The pro will be going back as soon as it gets here. Still in Osaka.

Finally got my silver Pro 16GB 1TB. Ordered within one hour of the announcement. It took quite some time, but finally...

I'm in California in case anyone wonders.

P.S.: locally, they don't seem to have this config, so I would have had to wait anyways. They said they had 16GB 512GB though.

I am also in California (about 5 miles from Apple, ironically) and UPS can't even give me an update on my Pro 16/512 that I ordered the day after launch. Expected delivery dates come and go on the UPS site and they are currently gone.

This is my exact configuration and I ordered within 10 minutes of orders going live and mine is in Alaska... May I ask what method shipment they used for you? E.g. UPS Worldwide Expedited

Yeah, it's UPS Worldwide Expedited. The tracking is quite... interesting. Here's a snapshot in case you're wondering:

It got stuck in Shanghai for 2 days, then didn't really move away from Alaska for 24 hours, then sat in Louisville for another 24 hours. After that, it went super fast.

I gave up on pre-orders. Ordered two M1 Air's 16/1TB on line and picked up in store a couple hours later. Current dates were Dec 5th on for the delivered ones.

Same when my wife wanted the iPhone 11. Picked it up at the store a day or two after release. Her co-workers waited another three weeks after they ordered right after the keynote.

There are 16/1TB models in a store an hour away but almost all of the inventory is gone in my local stores - it shows you what happens when people are willing to drive to not have to pay sales taxes. I'm avoiding travel to Boston because their COVID numbers are much higher than ours.
