Canon did the EOS R launch event in Maui. They have released 8 or more videos on Youtube about the R system, the first body, and the first 4 lenses they will be selling later this year.

Do you think Canon has done a better job than Nikon with their Z system? Any reason for a Sony shooter to head to Canon or Nikon? Perhaps more importantly, is the Z and R systems enough to keep folks from moving to Sony?

Looks very promising. Like any camera it is wise to wait for some in-depth reviews and probably a Firmware update or two before making any conclusions let alone purchases. That said, if the R is as good as it looks, those who've stuck with Canon should be more than satisfied. It has EOS handling (apart from the lack of click-wheel) and compatibility but a host of new features. The new lenses also look very promising. It will be interesting to see if they have real benefits from the new mount.

I thought the adapter with filter slot is interesting. In theory you purchase one CP or say a 10 stop ND and they work on all lens. No distortion on images shot with very wide angle glass. I would guess that adapter and filters will not be inexpensive. The control ring on the R lenses and adapter is an interesting idea as well. Evidently you can assign it to IOS or other parameters.

I anticipate the majority of Canon users will buy this and the majority of Nikon users will buy the Z.
Some of each might buy the Sony.
But if your all in with Sony, I doubt anyone will switch.

I'll forever be annoyed that they waited so long and fell behind on this market. I still have a few of my Canon lenses after having sold most of my 7D kit last year. Just in case something ever did come out. I like the adapters and I guess we'll see about these when they are released. I'd like to check the weights as that was a pretty big factor for me in switching. I'm going to have to make some decisions soon. Dammit. lol.

EDIT:
Well, double dammit. This thing looks nice. The ring functions and that multifunction bar look really nice. The grip and size look similar to the Oly OMD EM1, which feels really nice in the hand.

No rush. I'd wait for a while after launch.

Don't get that there is no IBIS and it only has a single card slot though? Some shortcomings on the Silent Shooting FPS as well.

They have had some good ideas though, like the filter in the adapter.

I also am a Canon shooter with the crop 80D and three lenses - 17-55 f/2.8, 70-200 f/2.8IS2 and the 50 f/1.4. I am hoping that both EF and EF-S lenses are compatible with the R, but I don't expect EF-S to be.

Lack of IBIS is a bummer. ISO range is 100-40,000, not comparable to Sony.

Wait and watch, Canon is 10 years late to the party.

Nice to have options and maybe the competition will drive down prices.

And it's kind of interesting that to a certain extent Sony and Nikon are competing with their own DSLR lines, unlike Sony. I wonder if we'll see as much development in the DSLR vs mirrorless bodies going forward.

Both the EF and EF-S lenses are compatible (with adapter)
That's good to hear and I just read up on it, looks like one adapter is all it takes. I wonder how the EF-S will perform on the larger FF sensor, and will that lead to vignetting on EF-S glass.

With EF-S only a small portion of the sensor gets used. I read approximately 12MP.
That's an interesting way to make use of the EF-S lenses, so the software essentially uses just the crop form factor of the FF sensor. I guess that is a compromise one has to make to use EF-S lenses on a FF sensor.

"I am a Canon user for a long time and I am quite excited with this announcement and most probably will preorder."

I, too, am a Canon user (77d bought last June), but...

... I wouldn't "pre-order".
I'd sit back and wait for at least a couple of months after the EOS R is shipping and pay close attention to the user reports as they come in.

Perhaps there may be a glitch or two "as yet undiscovered" that will be found by the first buyers and users "in the field" (and then addressed by Canon).

Let THEM find out if there are any problems.
Also, the price may drop a bit after 2-4 months, once the initial "buying frenzy" cools down.

IF the EOS R proves to be "in the real" as nice as it seems "in pre-release", I may get one too. But probably not until next year, along with the "control ring" adapter so I can use my EF-s lenses.

I'll wait and see if some show up in Canon's online refurbished store.
If so, they may be available for VERY good discounts.

For now I'm holding tight onto my 5D4. The EOS R line will be interestng to watch as it develops. For me, I'll wait for Mark II or even Mak III versions. You've got to give Canon credit for some unique and innovative things with its first dip into the mirrorless pool, like the three different attachment rings, R lens 3rd ring, etc.I don't do any vlogging and rarely if ever use video, so I really don't get excited or disappointed with those features. I'd like to see Canon come out with a pro-style stills only mirrorless, but like I have said, I'll wait for later versions to see if that happens. Kudos to Canon for springing this surprise on everyone

I cant help but think they have been trying their miniaturisation skills on us for the past couple of years with the SL1 and SL2 teeny tiny DSLR models.

I like the look of it to be honest but yes, no IBIS is a bummer. Having said that any Canon lens I would want to put on the front would likely have IS anyway. I will be watching what happens with the adapters too.

Maybe the EF-S lenses will work in crop mode the same way that the APS-C E-Mount lenses do on the Sony.

I must be the only person who finds the camera ugly and a bit underwhelming haha! I think it could’ve been amazing but I reckon Canon have limited it in ways with the purpose of protect sales of the 5D Mk4’s and 6D Mk2’s.

I don’t think many people will ditch their Canon DSLR’s for it - and I’m not sure many will migrate to it from another brand.

If one already has a 6D or 5D the R makes little sense imho

Never been a Canon person, for I am now a Sony guy after being a Nikon person for a long time. However, I think it's great that Canon and Nikon are coming out if FF Mirrorless cameras, but it seems to me that they are a little gun shy. By that I mean I think they are afraid of hurting their DSLR lineup and/or having loyal customers go to a competitor. I think once all manufacturers realize FF Mirrorless cameras are the future or at least an important part of the future that they will make the FF Mirrorless cameras less crippled.
One of the reasons I went with Sony is that they are on their 3rd Generation of the A7 series of cameras and I like their roadmap when it comes to improvements on the next generation. Sony seems to listen to complaints that customers have with a few exceptions. I hope Nikon and Canon follow suit by listening to complaints and making improvements on the next generations. Competition benefits the consumer in the long run and gives people more options and/or to stay loyal to their camera manufacturer.
ALL companies need to stop crippling their cameras, but I think that all depends on the market if they do or not. All of the cameras are crippled for various reasons (my opinion and you know what they say about opinions. ;)) and I am guessing Nikon and Canon cripple the FF mirrorless cameras so they don't offend their loyal DSLR camera customers. Though I could be wrong on that and it might be more of a production issue. I really don't know why Sony cripples their cameras, but it might just be that they are (were) the forerunner in FF Mirrorless for the last 5 years? I think what has hurt all these cameras over the years is the camera market share has shrunk because the average person is more than happy with the smartphone cameras leaving camera manufacturers fighting for the professional market. I can't blame them for being a little gun shy when it comes to FF cameras, for if they make a big blunder and hurt their DSLR lineups then they might be in dire straits financially.

I am not sure I get your point. The new Canon R has almost 5D M4 specs at 1000$ less. Not sure what they protect.

But it's not their first dip in the mirrorless pool at all...

Remember the M series? No? Neither do they! :D

Have to agree with you Mark. I don't understand why they didn't go with the 5DS sensor in this thing and really make it a remarkable and almost industry leading body, built for their new lenses to get the absolute best out of them! Maybe this range of lenses aren't built to be used at that sort of MP level though, I find it a bit interesting really, in a peculiar way, not a good way...

As a currently heavily committed Canon full-frame user, my next move will either be to a 5DS or to a medium format Fuji or Pentax, starting off with just 2 lenses for them and then adding to them later on as I can.

Right now, with my 6D Mk I, I can print at A1 size really well, the next goal for me is to go much larger again!

At this moment in time, it's too little, too late from Canon and Nikon in the mirrorless field, from my perspective.
