So, an installer than can be run on a fresh install of leopard? Not gonna happen, sorry. I've got much better things to be doing than tracking down the packages for the dozens of Leo updates and then adding them to a single installer.

So many different opinions on this project, everybody thinks I should do something different! Tomorrow I'll start a new thread so I can add a poll. Also might clear up confusion, because I've said a lot of different things in this thread.

No. Not an installer for all of the Leopard updates, that is what Software Update is for. Technically speaking, I do not see Software Update stopping working for at least the next 2-3 years. A single installer for apps and tweaks only that can be run on any Leopard 10.5.8 machine.

That would ruin the point :p. The main idea is to save people time by having the apps and updates preinstalled.

It would still save a significant amount of time as all that one would have to do is install Leopard and the latest Combo update either from Apple's website or Software Update. Then, just download the installer and let it install all of the programs and tweaks in a single click.

The main 3 things this is meant for:
-Updates
-Apps
-Tweaks

I find installing the updates a very long and annoying process. Making the user update the OS manually is not something I'm going to do.

I appreciate your view though! :)

Making a flat image is not a very good idea, particularly since it's not very hard to modify Apple's OSInstall mechanism to add more packages and do other modifications on the fly (pre or post-flight) during an installation of OS X. The end user can properly use OS X's Setup Assistant to create an account and set up the system.

It's similar to the technique used to build versions of OS X that can run on unsupported Macs.

Additionally, Software Update can be taken over with a custom server to add additional packages for apps or binaries that are updated after the original distribution is made.

As demoed here (modifying my existing AUS server software):

That's really cool! I could use this for another project. ;) Could you give more details on how you did it? I'll try to connect to your server, swdist.furcode.co, before I make my own.
