That's the part I don't like. I really do not want to install Windows on my Mac.
I guess I will have to wait and hope AnyDVD HD will have a Mac version soon. :(

Well, you will be waiting for a long time, as I am pretty sure SlySoft has no plans to do a Mac version of AnyDVD.. Windows on a Mac is very easy and harmless. I have a small XP virtual machine just to run AnyDVD, works great in Parallels.

...I am pretty sure SlySoft has no plans to do a Mac version of AnyDVD...
This question has been asked a thousand times in the Slysoft forums and the two general responses are:
-"there will be no Mac version of AnyDVD" - which sucks, or
-"we have no plans to bring AnyDVD to the Mac in its present incarnation" - which gives us hope:).

Anyway, with Micro Center offering previous generation Mac Mini's for $400 (after rebate) through April 12th, I'm considering making the jump to Blu-Ray ripping. The Mac Mini will only be a front end; the Mac Pro will do the ripping. This is what I hope to accomplish, and I'd just like to get a few things straight before I take the plunge:

1. on the Mac Pro, in Windows, rip the Blu-Ray using AnyDVD-HD. I'll be left with one big .m2ts file that contains all I need to play the disc (similar to an .iso of a DVD)
2. move that file from Windows over to OS X, into a folder called something like "Blu-Ray rips"
3. install Plex on the Mac Mini, which will be connected to my 1080p HDTV
4. the Mac Pro and the mac mini will be hard wired to my router and will see each other on the LAN
5. using the Mac Mini as a front end, load the .m2ts file in Plex and stream it from the Mac Pro to the Mac Mini and watch it on the HDTV

That's just a general outline, but in a nutshell, that's what I'd like to do. I'd lke some feedback from those who are already ripping blu-ray discs on the feasibility of this plan. Thanks.

Not a bad plan, seems doable. The only issue I can see is a huge amount of disk space you're going to need to store those m2ts files. We're talking 20-30GB per title here.

I personally prefer to downconvert BD content to 720p, which shrinks the size to 3-5GB per title.. Still looks pretty darn good on my 105" projection screen, but much more manageable. And the movies are playable on my AppleTVs around the house. Don't even need Mini/Plex if you go this route.

Sucks it can't do VC-1 m2ts/ts files :( damn Microsoft and their closed source codecs.
Wow, you really are on a roll with bad information at the moment (nods in the direction of the "Best video convertor" thread you have dug up)

I presume you are talking here about the Mac version of TSMuxer (as per the thread topic, and not about HandBrake), from which i quote direct from the TSMuxer site:
"Supported videocodecs:
H.264
Microsoft VC-1;
MPEG-2."

I certainly have no problems with VC1 M2TS files

I somehow posted this in the wrong thread that was about
The latest HB svn has this ability with AC3 DD, but does not handle DTS or True HD. I don't think it handles vc1, but I could be mistaken.
I commented on that post because in 0.93(latest supported version) it was not working and it was 3rd on the list when I looked it up. That was not bad information, the current supported version of handbrake does not work.

And yes this does work, this is about the only thing that does unless you want to build the program yourself.

If most BR disks are DTS, how are you playing them after ripping?

I've been holding off of doing BR because my ATV had no easy way of getting them on.

However if I can just rip with anydvd in a parallels window (no reboot required) and then play with Plex, I might have to explore that option.

What does tsmuxer do if you can play the rips directly in plex?

This stuff makes my head swim

I play mine with Plex or the Apple TV. The ATV requires that you transcode the DTS to Dolby Pro Logic II (5-channel matrix) surround, downsize to 720p (i.e., no wider than 1280x720) and 24 fps or less.

I think it's pretty easy now. Just time consuming (cpu-wise, not really person-wise).

TSmuxer allows you to remove the unnecessary tracks from a movie. For example, I have no interest in the Spanish, Dutch, Chinese, etc audio or subtitle tracks, so I remove them with tsmuxer. In addition, tsmuxer extracts the DTS and AC3 audio cores from DTS-HD and True-HD high bit rate audio tracks (reducing the sizes by about 80%). You can then pipe the resulting m2ts or ts file from tsmuxer to Handbrake.

Plex plays DTS via optical out on the mini?

Be honest - how much hassle is it setting up a Plex HTPC?

No I meant setting up the software in general.

I tried using various front-ends in the PC world, it always lead to imdb interface dropouts, and never would in a stable way allow me to easily add, browse and play movies without frequent adjustments, tweaks, and updates.

Is plex really a plug and play way to manage a video library? With handbrake and metax going into itunes, it's close to that right now for me. It takes just a few seconds of input and the file appears in itunes (and thus ATV) with a cover picture and description.

Sorry if this is getting off topic, but with tsmuxer now available on leopard, and ripping within parallels, I'm about ready to make the plunge if the front end aspect will work.

I don't want to do all hte work just to transcode to 720p and DPL on the ATV.

Ok guys, I think I've decided to give up on the ATV and move to the mini with plex. Primarily because now that I'm using some bluray source material, I am not at all satisfied with getting dolby prologic downmixes using handbrake since atv won't play DTS.

I used anydvd to rip a bluray disk tonight, and I end up with a folder on my hard disk that has a "BDMV" and "CERTIFICATE" folder in it, and then many other subfolders within it.

I thought after reading this thread again that plex would play this folder w/o any further manipulation, but after pointing it to the directory, I"m not getting anything showing up to play.

Do I have to use the TSMUXER software to create a single file in order to make plex work? If I am willing to sacrifice disk space for ease of ripping (disk space is cheap, time is valuable), what is the fastest way to go from Bluray to plex?

BTW, this was a "BD+" disk, and so the mac makeMKV wouldn't touch it.

You're almost there. In the BDMV folder is a folder called STREAMS. Open this and look for the largest file. That's the one you want to navigate to in Plex. Keep in mind that some titles have the movies fragmented and for those you have to use TSMuxer to open the PLAYLIST folder for the playlist (usually the longest) and assemble them into one m2ts file before you can play them in Plex.

I think that is the issue - I ended up with just a small portion of the movie when I chose the largest file. So now I have to figure out what order they go in?? ARGH.

Maybe I'm doing something wrong, but when I browse to that folder with TSMUXER, this is all I see:

Voila_Capture12.jpg

Not sure how to know within that list what to use.

TSMuxer crashes on load for me. Tried it on 2 macs.
But it works in BootCamp
What steps do I take for a TV Series.

I ripped Dexter S1D1 Blu Ray with AnyDVD in Bootcamp.
Now what do I do with TSMuxer? I use Plex mainly, but would like to make it playable on AppleTV as well.

Thanks.
