I had the exact opposite experience, but I run a lot of 3rd party apps. I notice you only mentioned Apple apps. You might as well just use an ipad then.

Not for Logic. If you run a lot of 3rd party apps you might as well just use a Dell then.

I find big sur more restrictive than catalina for power users, but i'd say the 1st catalina release and this Big Sur are neck and neck about similar degrees of "mess". Instead of building on months of bug fixes and stability improvements, They take a relatively stable version of the os, and then scramble it up and destabilize it all over again every year. woopie...

I use various 3rd party apps, and pretty much been fine. No kernel panics, the only issue, as I said, is the iCloud Tabs. Running the 2017 MacBook Pro. Always find it odd when I see people saying they have the opposite experience as me.

Side note, I think that you were a bit derogatory with the comment about just using an iPad. There was no need for that.

I use my mid-2014 13" Pro (i5, 8 GB) for basic apps (mail, Internet, iTunes), and pages. Nothing fancy so Catalina works perfectly. Big Sur seems to hang at times with the spinning beach ball but it eventually resumes without any crashes or bugs so far. I've only been using it for a day.

was just being sarcastic... Clearly Apple is heading towards a comply or get out sort OS. Some will love, others will hate. Others won't even notice.

It’s always amusing seeing people like you making doom and gloom predictions for MacOS and where it’s heading. 🤣

Upgraded from Catalina 10.5.4, and it's been a hot mess. Control Center crashes and relaunches constantly, so ReportCrash was taking up 85% of one CPU constantly until I disabled it. Also having issues with iCloud, generally system lagginess, and lots of little things not working, and I just lost my Stickies database.

Running on a 2013 MacBook Air 11"

you might get this when you reboot back into Catalina. I rebooted into Big Sur and the disk (disk2s7) wasn't showing in Big Sur nor int eh Big Sur recovery. So either it must be connected to Big Sur in some way? Would be interested to hear what others think.

Did you create a new Container and Volume or just a new Volume in same the Container where Catalina is installed?

Maybe try a new clean install to a new Container and Volume.

Two days using the OS, upgraded from Catalina:

Everything I have installed works: iWok, Office - insider fast, FCPx, Motion, Magnet, DayOne, Things, Fantastical, ToDo, CleanMyMac.

Battery life is quite good, it seems to drain slower than Catalina

Boot is as slow as Catalina

Graphic glitch when an app switches integrated to discrete (1 second blank screen) on external display

Wifi drops when I go in System preferences and check for updates.

No Translation available in Safari.

There are a bunch of UI inconsistencies (e.g. weird spacing on some sidebar lists, the same sound is called 'Glass' in one pane and 'Crystal' in another) and I've experienced an occasional app crash (most recently from Maps and the Mac App Sore) but it hasn't been a horrendous experience. I never usually put Mac betas on my machine but was too excited this time around to wait. Pretty stable overall.

I assume you have a time machine back up and did not install a Beta 1 version of an OS on your most important computer as known as your daily driver?

My i7-4790k Hackintosh is the computer known as my daily driver, which is still on Catalina (and, incidentally, loses the Stickies database as well from time to time).

My MacBook Air is my take-everywhere machine that I play around with and keep nothing important on so I can wipe it quickly if I need to, hence why I installed the beta.

So while I do keep backups, nothing of value is lost either way other than time.

I tried to partition the drive which failed. Then created a new container with Catalina which worked and installed into that container. Was that a mistake in doing that? Wasn’t sure the best method.

A new Container is what I was suggesting. How does it work now? Still getting the same error message?

At the the days of "Why doesn't apple just license the MacOS like Microsoft does with Windows" are seemingly gone...or even worse "Why doesn't Apple just use windows?"

iCloud Tabs In Safari

Previously, when you had tabs open in Safari on macOS and iOS/ iPadOS, Safari on other browsers would show you the name of your device and tabs underneath. Now, Safari on devices does something like this - John AppleSeed's MacBook (9). That number inside can change, and I have even seen multiple computers listed under iCloud Tabs in Safari, and they seem to relate to my 'browsing sessions'. For example, suppose my current session has 6 tabs open on macOS, and I close all tabs and close Safari. Next time, I use Safari to browse websites in 3 tabs, say. Now, if I check my iPhone, Safari will list two computers, with numbers in brackets that are not relatable to anything, containing my two sessions. Clearly something is wrong somewhere.

Had this issue in the past with macOS and iCloud. Its a mix of OS and iCloud syncing. I raised (hell) and a support ticket directly with Apple and had it escalated to "engineers" who's fixes were never really great. ultimately after upgrading to various versions of 10.14.6 it seems to have resolved and I no longer have this on my iCloud account...but am concerned if its still lingering.

Overall, Big Sur is visually a bit more appealing....though whoever the UI designer is, they let them overly contrast and emboss things, might want to scale that back a bit. I like the menu spacing and overall look.

I believe the coming weeks will shape a polished OS. And iCloud Tabs issues should normally resolve when the OS is released. On macOS betas, I have observed that iCloud Tabs doesn't work very reliably for me, generally, and resolves itself when I am on the release version of macOS.

I havent tried. Catalina seems sluggish. I.e it's a fresh install of a week ago, not installed any new software at all, can’t work it out.

2015 Retina here(it's my travel laptop, not my main one, but also my only one fully supported), and dual booting Mojave and Big Sur. I haven't personally run Catalina on this system, but did do Catalina Beta on a 2012 Air. Speed seems okay-ish(Mojave was fine on the Air I mentioned above, while early betas of Catalina were borderline unusable on it) with no noticeable difference between it and Mojave after Spotlight finished indexing.

So far what I've tried to do on Big Sur has worked reasonably well, but I haven't really pushed it much beyond web browsing and a few other odds and ends. Messages seems to be a bit buggy with regard to syncing up to my iCloud messages-for whatever reason it picked up through March of this year and then stopped(although it works with anything that has come in since then).

My biggest complaint has been WiFi issues. For one thing, whether actually connected or not, it likes to display a slash through the WiFi symbol in the menu bar. The other big thing for me is that normally the WiFi signal on this computer is rock stable, but Big Sur seems to randomly drop it while in the same locations I've not had a single drop in the year I've had and been using this computer.

Stability overall has been fine.

Since 10.15.3, I can't find any example of bugs in Catalina on my Late-2013 MBP 15.

I always see those "Catalina is a dumpster fire, Catalina is like Vista, Catalina is like xxxXXXxxx," but never see any real specific examples of what is wrong. I mourned the loss of Quicktime 7, but that is about it.
