Let's get Apple to add 120Gb HD support for 1st Gen Air

Hello fellow 1st gen MBA owners. I propose we barrage Apple with e-mails requesting that they make a HD upgrade available for our Laptops. We all know that the 120Gb drive from the new iPod Classic will fit our laptop. Now all we need is for Apple to add the FW support for such a drive. I bought this laptop believing that one day we would have support for such a drive and now it seems apple are pushing us aside as they move forward with the new SATA drive.

A lot of you have more experience at this than I do and I am hoping that someone has an e-mail address that we can use to send Apple these requests.

I totally agree with this.

When I heard the theory that there's a limit of 80gigs on the hard drive in the rev. 1 Air ... I thought to myself "yet another 'gotcha' by Apple."

Every time I turn around, you find something like that that makes you go WHY?

On the rev. 1 Air ... another example is the lack of a 'thousands of colors' option. Because of that, there's certain entertainment titles that won't run.

It has nothing to do with the x3100, since I can get thousands of colors when I boot into Xp.

You believed. Don't blame Apple for your assumptions. On the other side, they should allow the upgrade, but they should just update the firmware so the support is there, but don't expect Apple to say, "Here, $100 for the 120GB hard drive upgrade" or something like that.

Please, if you're THAT desperate, buy a 120GB iPod Classic and do the switch yourself.

what does apple have to do with it?

If you want a 120GB, install it yourself or pay a tech to do it. There are lots of people who would have no problem doing that install and would charge less than apple.

How about instead for begging apple, lets look for a vendor that sells an HD that fits our machine. Apple will never and I MEAN NEVER perform something close to this when they can sell us a new air with 120gb.

I have searched this until I could type no more. There seems to be a few that have tried and the computer simply fails to acknowledge a larger hard drive. Is it correct to think there is no HW support built into the processor for a larger drive?

All I want is the HW support in the FW. That is it. I will buy my own Hard Drive and make it work.

FW = Firmware or Firewire?

Is the problem firmware or pin-out? Has anyone been able to confirm that the 120GB drive used in the iPod has the same pin-outs?

Also I remember in the PPC Macs that the bios at the time was pretty esy to get into and change, am I wrong assuming there is something similar in the EFI?

It's an IDE connector. IDE on old computers support 128gbs, so 120gb would not be an issue. It's probably not a firmware / apple issue.

In addition, IDE drives might need the proper jumper settings.

I would think it's because nobody wants to support PATA anymore. A couple companies announced product, but I don't think anyone has delivered the 120GB 5mm PATA drives. Now that Apple has switched to SATA, I doubt you'll ever see anyone deliver one.

Apple is not going to help you make an unauthorized, warranty voiding modification to your laptop. You are better off spending the time you would wast nagging them on working more and saving money for a Rev B. :)

But that would be a waste of a good piece of equipment. I care about none of the new features except for the larger hard drive.

Someone just posted on this forum that they got a 1.8" 8mm Toshiba HD to work. Now why would this work and not the 5mm one from the classic?
