I upgraded an Air 2, to the Air 4.

Pluses: great screen, solid performance, support for Apple Pencil 2.

Negatives: losing the Home button and headphone socket. I HATE the multi purpose power/login button, and lack of headphone socket is a real PITA for iOS music making. Also don't like the squared off edges to the device, which can make holding it uncomfortable after a while.

I realise the design related points above are standard on the Pro's as well, but I much preferred the Air 2 design.

Yes i agree with you about the headphones jack, i really miss that from my Ipad Air 3 (which i still have). With my Air 4 though, i use a USB C to female USB A adaptor and connect my Fiio K1 DAC and then use my Sound Magic HP 151 headphones for incredible audio.

I like the Air. And was hoping to upgrade from an Air 2 to an Air 3. Was not happy that the Air 3 used the gen 1 pencil; so waited another year for the 2020 Pro. If the Air 4 was available, I would have bought that in a heart beat.
My daughter though just bought an 11” M1 Pro. she was looking at the Air but thought 64G. was too small. She briefly considered the 256Air but for about $50 more she could get the 11”Pro 128GB. Made sense to me.
It’s definitely a hard sell to stick to the Air 4 if you’re going above the 64gb base model as now you enter pro territory for pricing. For the extra $50 you get double the Ram, double the speakers, 120hz screen, better cameras, better processor etc.. it’s a lot for the $50 difference

Yeah I’ve got the Apple adapter, but it feels very fragile, takes up the power slot, and has to be inserted at the bottom of the ipad - making it even more susceptible to damage when using apps that force you to have the screen the right way up (e.g. Instagram). Not an issue when I connect it to the Mini and Ableton via IDAM with a standard cable though.

All of my iPhones have had hardware failures with worn power sockets, so I worry about putting more wear and tear on the single iPad socket.

Aside from that though the Air 4 is a real bargain for the power it serves up.

if you want to add some color to your life, AIR 4 IS THE WAY TO GO! I got the sky blue and love it! my space gray MBP is awesome, but no color options besides silver! I think I'm going to get a red mini iPhone when its released!

What is your experience with Touch ID? I found it really unreliable. I often use password because finger is not recognized with Touch ID. It is not better even with same finger saved 3 times. iPad Pro 10.5" was much better in that regard and even iPad Air 2 was better. It is normal for iPad Air 4 or should I warranty claim it?

The sensor on mine is also really unreliable. Must be the slim form-factor. Very frustrating design choice.

The Power button Touch ID on my Air 4 works absolutely flawlessly for me, just like how Touch ID works for me on my older iphones. I guess the thinner contact area may cause issues for some peoples fingerprints, but for me its perfect. I have the option enabled for 'rest finger on button', maybe this will help you guys.

Thank you for responses. I deleted all fingerprints and tried to save them once again. After that and restart of the iPad, Touch ID works reliably. It is strange because I tried it many times. But not with current iOS. So maybe for some poeple’s fingerprints earlier versions of iOS did not save them/register them properly.

Since the Mini 6 is rumored to be a small Air 4, I wonder if anyone has any experience of hooking up their 4 to an external monitor and using it as a laptop/desktop? Do many apps support full screen mode on the external monitor or just a few?

I'd like to use it(if rumors are correct that is) to edit some light video, but I'd prefer to do it on a larger monitor with keyboard and mouse. Of course, this would not be a primary use of the Mini, but it would be fun to be able to.
