Am I correct in assuming the PPI of a monitor never changes no matter the scaling or resolution on the monitor? The Dell is at 163ppi and the LG is about 150, hope its usable compared to the 5K iMac.

The Asus PQ321q is 140 ppi and I would say to me a bit more comfertable than the 150ppi LG. But the LG is sharper by a little, it's a little less comfortable than the asus but definitely comfortable overall. For me 150 is the most I would feel comfortable, 163ppi on the dell might be pushing it, but it's so subjective you have to see it.

Considering this monitor, but also the Dell 27" 4K for $699.

There are some folks in the US getting that Dell 27" 4K for just over $500 with coupons.

The DPI is definitely fixed on the monitor... when you scale, you're effectively increasing or decreasing the size of the desktop but it will always be rendered at the resolution of the panel. For example a scaling factor of 2x on a 4K display will give you the desktop of 1920x1080 but super sharp. A scaling factor of 1.5x on a 4K display will give you a desktop that's effectively 2560x1440 but also much sharper (thanks to the added pixels and Apple's great scaling algorithm).

This is true for scaling, I was talking about running the monitor at the full native res 1:1.

Ohh, No question, I was just sharing my experience running the 4K displays at native full res 1:1 and how comfortable the viewing experience was depending on the screen size and ppi.

Trying to order the Dell with these coupons,$FHX1NQQR7ZG17 and CTCBFMG8$BF92F. I can get the first but not the second. The first works on in the Dell Business site, and the second is not working at all.
Anyone else have better luck?

I have a Mac Book Pro Retina 2012 and a Mac Pro 2012 with a GTX 680. I was unable to run either with MST activated. I was able to get very strange resolutions and highest was 1080p. The Mac Pro was running 10.8.5, which could be the issue, but the LG works...The Macbook pro was running Yosemite but that one is not supported per apple for 4k 60hz anyway. The MacPro was able to run the PQ321Q no issues in windows 8.1.

I am going to try Yosemite on the MacPro with the PQ321Q today, so that should be able to work I think. I actually prefer the PQ321Q's aspect ratio and slightly bigger pixels. The color and sharpness is not as good as the LG but by maybe 10%, not a huge difference. The strangest issue I noticed on the PQ321Q was that my speakers start to Buzz extremely loud running the display port feed. I have never experienced this with any other monitor, ever, maybe a GSM cellphone, haha. Seems like a ground loop issue.

I see. I missed what hardware you were using with it. It's odd that you experienced issues like the buzzing.

Well I couldn't get the Asus PQ321Q to work in OS X with MST mode in Yosemite either. on the GTX 680 What a cluster... I think the LG is the keeper though cause I can run it at 4096x2160 50z or 3840x2160 @60hz in 10.8.5 to boot!

How many C4k monitors can be run by the nMP?

Eventually, the OS/LG drivers for the LG-31MU97 monitor will be fixed so that it can display true 4k(4096x2160)60Hz via TB/DP. And there will be other pro/sumer C4k monitor options that will arrive soon.

But how many of them can be run off one nMP? It looks like the answer would be three, kinda.

The third monitor, off the Lower/Hdmi/TB2 (bus-3), would always max out @30Hz. According to my reading of the Apple specs. Not sure if the D300/D500/D700 card options make any difference in this.

Perhaps the next nMP(Broadwell?), estimated arrival in 2015-Q1, will bump the graphics too.

SUCCESS!!! GTX 980 For the Win!!

I installed the EVGA GTX 980 SC (04G-P4-2982-KR) on the Mac Pro 5,1 and I am running the LG 31MU97 at 4096x2160 @ 60hz. Woohooo!!

I couldn't fit this card in the first slot for some reason so I had to move it to slot 2, but then the GPU covers slot 3 so I lost a PCIe slot.

I can't get any other scaled resolutions at 4096x2160 besides the 2x res of 2048x1080, switchrez X wasn't able to make any HiDPI custom resolutions either. But certainly good progress!!

The device id file that was provided did the trick now I can run all the correct scaled resolutions at 60hz. Amazing, thanks so much everyone!

So is this display now without issues on OS X with that Device ID?

The device works perfectly with a GTX 980 in the 2012 MacPro 5,1 under Yosemite 10.10 using the DisplayProductID-76e7.txt to get all the scaled resolutions. No glitches, runs great at 60hz.

Ah ok... I'm wondering if the same is true for a 2013 nMP?

At this point I would take every situation on it's own, cause 4k is all over the place. Someone else said they tried the GTX 980 and it didn't work, so I dunno what to tell you, except with the specific GTX 980 model I have on the 5,1 MacPro I was able to get it fully working in Yosemite 10.10.

Ahh *******. Okay thanks for testing, saved me some headache. That is kind of lame though, dammit Apple. What about windows, did you try that by any chance?

I don't understand why it won't work in Windows though, driving me crazy.

Windows work without a glitch @60Hz. The only glitch are Windows themselves. I wanted to explore what is 10-bit color all about and since OSX doesn't support 10-bit I was forced to do my first install of Win8.1. MY GOD! The UI is so messed up! M$ essentially shot their own foot. Win was fast and stable but the logic of UI just made me appreciate OSX a bit more then before. They are onto something with the tiles but not the way they implemented them. And I couldn't try 10-bit anyway because I learned that only workstation graphics such as Quadro and Firepro have these enabled. We are not getting any break as consumers, are we? :)

Your screenshots show only scaled res @60hz. Not the 4096. I got that too without even messing with product ID. Granted I am on Hackintosh and using latest nVidia web drivers. Pressing Alt+Scaled option gave me all sorts of options all the way up to like 7k or so. But when selecting native 4096 I only got 50Hz. Can you post System Profiler showing you run full 4096 at 60hz?

Sure here it is. I have the option to select 50hz or 60hz. You do know scaled 17:9 resolutions mean that the res is running at full 4096x2160 right?

Yosemite OS-X 10.10.01

I know it's unlikely, but has anyone noticed any improvements to the graphics /drivers under the latest Y.1 released today? Just curious.

I asked this question several weeks ago, but thought I would ask it again since there is now more hands on experience with this LG monitor.
I have a 2013 nMP with D700s running latest Mavericks.
I'm currently running two 2560x1440 Nec monitors and want to add this LG as a third monitor and would be satisfied with UHD resolutions, 60hz, with the black bars.
I'll run all monitors off separate TB buses.

Will this pretty much be a plug and play for me ?
If I have the LG set on UHD resolution, will UHD videos play pixel per pixel ?

LG Site - Monitor Section, Changes.

Looks like someone at LG reads this forum.
Some updates to the graphics card section (at least since last checked).

For another point of view, I've had it a week now running on a nMP with dual 700's generally pretty pleased with it. I've come from using an Apple 30in cinema so it's definitely sharper.

I'm using it with the new profile from SwitchresX and the app itself, it will run at the full native 4096 but as people have said that's just way too small to be usable. I'm using mainly Photoshop, Illustrator, Indesign, Dreamweaver and Strata and the menus are just too tiny to be readable at 4096. I've found the best compromise is 3008x1586 HiDPI sharp but slightly more real estate than the cinema display.

Colour out of the box is pretty crap for repro work, seems to be overly saturated and setup for games and youtube, with some tweaking it's got better but I'm still working on getting neutral greys and clean whites.

I think the OS and software needs it catch up on 4K displays and although the type is generally sharp in most quite a lot of it looks somewhat pixelated, although that is probably because the pixels are that much sharper (and I'm a fussy bugger) anti aliasing made things a bit smoother on the old monitor but looking at it now they just look blurry. I've found switching to darker menus/interface helps.

No glitches or anomalies as some have reported, although I do find it sometimes randomly puts itself to sleep.

50hz isn't really a problem for me (60hz on the cinema) as most of my work is static, 60 is probably nicer when scrolling fast though as that can be a bit stuttery.

At the moment I think it's the best bet, other than the new 31 Eizo which will be a fortune I daresay or the Sharp at twice the price (haven't seen it in action yet so not sure of the picture quality), matt screen is really nice as well.

I got it for £870 from Overlockers so good value I think.
