I have a desktop lamp connected in one of the USB ports but just to annoy me the screen delivers power to the USB ports even when the computer is off so the lamp is on 24/7. Why, oh why.

Other than that the screen works great with my 15". The first time I connected it I got a lot of beach balls just trying to click things but after the first reboot it has been working just fine. The only thing (besides the USB power) would be that the cable that came with the screen is very touch sensitive. If I so much as touch the cable it loses connection for a second or so before the screen comes back.

I had a similar experience with the cable when I tried to connect the LG 4K. It seemed like a very loose connection.
It didn't feel solid like an older USB connection. It feels loose like when I plug in a HDMI cable.

I prefer this behaviour - Ethernet connections and hard drives definitely benefit from it, not to mention the ability to charge any USB device - phone, watch, iPad, sports watch etc without having to turn your machine on. Very convenient.

I was wondering whether anyone could suggest a USB-C hub with ethernet to attach to the back of this monitor? I have one attached currently, but it has a very short cable and sort of hangs in midair. I am worried about the extra stress on the USB port at the back of the monitor because of the weight of this hub (otherwise it works quite well). I was looking at the OWC USB-C hub, which has an 18" cable (this would allow the hub to sit flat on my desk) - would this work? Any other suggestions?

Finally got my 5k monitor a couple of days ago. Verdict? This stuff is awesome! Text is crystal clear, as you would expect from a 5K screen, but the best part is the fantastic color reproduction. Colors really "pop", and are generally more intense than I'm accustomed to: this becomes especially evident when I look at the greens and the reds.
I tried watching "the force awakens" on this last night: and there was a very noticable difference compared to both my Sony TV and my spouse's iMac 2014 (also 5K).

An interesting glitch though: I hooked up my wireless mouse to the USB-C hub on the back of the screen, and whenever I disconnect the MBP from the monitor + later reattach it, I have to disconnect the mouse transmitter from the screen, and then reattach it to re-establish contact with the mouse?

Having said that, I would recommend this to anyone. Go buy it!

EDIT: Also tried using bootcamp with Windows 10 yesterday: running it on 4K resolution went perfect: scaling on this monitor is working very well. Gaming with Battlefield 1 and DooM tested without incident. It's workning perfectly, and games look stunning on this monitor. Top marks!

Nice, what're those stands (for the headphones, Mac, and iOS devices)?

That looks like a winner. Anker seems to be a reputable company. Would it allow full USB 3.1 speeds when connected to the back of the LG monitor?

If I understand all of this USB-C/3.0 mess, it would be 5Gb (Gen 1) with a 3.0 cable. I need a 6 ft cable so having trouble finding 3.0 and a USB-C connector though.

I also love the fact we can control brightness through keyboard in clamshell mode and I love the 3 usb-c ports on the back.

I keep hearing this but the touch bar brightness adjustment will only adjust the MBP brightness. The only way I've found to control the LG brightness is to go into to display settings and adjust manually every time. I've got to be missing something

In clamshell mode: with the computer lid closed, and an external keyboard connected: the brightness control on the keyboard controls the LG screen: thats correct.
When the lid is open, and the MBP screen is active, though, the touchbar controls will adjust brightness for the MBP only, and the external keyboard will then still adjust the brightness of the LG screen; not the MBP screen.

The adjustment of the LG screen via the external keyboard is somewhat slow and laggy, anyone else experiencing this?

I am using macOS 10.12.3 Beta 4 and have setup F1 and F2 to control the brightness of the display. I see no lag. The brightness changes gradually but starts to change right away once the function key is pressed. When the MacBook Pro is open, F1 and F2 on the Touch Bar adjust the brightness of the 5K display.

Ops. Yeah, missed that. =)

Just configured it the same way: and now the TB F1+F2 controls the LG display. Thanks!

...adjustment still slow/ laggy though. Will try a reboot later, might help.

Wow, very nice setup!
Link to both wallpapers please?

What dongle are you guys using for the back? I'm looking for ethernet, card reader and USB A

Definitely lag with keyboard adjustment. Should be fixable via software/firmware update since there's no lag via System Preferences.

I'm using a Monoprice SuperSpeed 7-Port USB-C Hub (bus powered). I have an existing USB card reader which I then plug directly into this. Can't comment on ethernet. One member is having really slow speed with a USB-C ethernet adapter though.

I was considering this display for mainly Windows (bootcamp) use. Would've been devastating to find out it could only do 4K :(

I'm using the Belkin USB-C one for ethernet, and these Aukey adaptors for USB-A. Then this Satechi card reader attached to the MacBook when I need it for an SD card.

"only 4K" LOL!:D

Text is sharp, pictures and movies look nice and gaming, well, you wouldn't want to game in 4K with a MBP anyway.

Using bootcamp, the latest AAA titles run smoothly in 2560x1440 on my machine with 2,9Ghz i7 & Radeon 460. Thats good enough for me. If running windows games on high resolutions is your main priority: go for a stationary windows ATX machine instead. Macs are built with other tasks in mind.

Just got my 5k set up yesterday and I immediately noticed that the USB-C connections are very loose, especially in comparison to connecting the same adapters directly to my MBP. I can easily wiggle them from side to side.

Is anyone experiencing the same? I'm using two Apple USB-C to USB-A and a Belkin USB-C to Ethernet. The Thunderbolt cable isn't much sturdier.

Update
on Realtek based (Anker, Belking, Cable Matters, Monoprice, etc.) USB-C Ethernet Adapter not getting full speed when connected to the LG5k monitor : the problem is driver related

The driver built-in OSX seams to be the problem

The driver found on Ankers website seams to make the adapter able to go full speed. For now, I'd suggest anyone using one of these adapters to download and install the driver.

I should probably report the bug to Apple so they can fix it in next OS upgrade.

Good stuff. I'm glad that you were able to resolve the issue!
