I was having the same issue using a shorter third-party cable. I just tried the original cable from the monitor, and it comes up as 5k.
Interesting. I'll have to have a look to see if I can fine the original. I thought I was already using it. Has anyone had success with a replacement cable? E.g. the apple thunderbolt 3

For those that have had problems restoring the native 5K resolution even by swapping the TB cable multiple times (after the Mac has awaken from sleep):
Plug off the power cable behind the monitor and plug it back in. Not the Thunderbolt cable. It seems like the trick is to completely cut the power to the monitor.

Anyone taken out 3rd party insurance on the monitor to cover issues out of warranty?

I was looking at this for my M1 MBA / M1 MBP .... I got as far as ordering then had a touch of the seconds after reading re 4K instead of 5K and screen ghosting.
Is this now the wrong time to buy one of these ? One website I saw suggested it is not stocked in Apple stores as being replaced.

Any comment for a prospective buyer and alternatives if there are obvious ones ?

I intend to use it for web browsing, Netflix and photo editing in Lightroom Classic (thus wanting as sharp as I can).

People are losing their minds in these forums regarding the M1 platforms.
They are good machines. I think the traditional overly hyped YouTube videos skewed expectations.

From a usability perspective, they are better than the machines they replaced in the product line. Don’t expect them to be top-tier options.

in short, it works fine for Lightroom. And will be better when the app is native.

It is the best external display available, if we don’t count the Apple Pro Display XDR at $6k.
It can run with the full 5K resolution, right now with the M1 Macs it just has some bugs after sleep/wake.

Ahhh so it's missing the 3200x1800 one! So this means there is some sort of limitation on the M1 doing HDPI resolutions greater than 3008 horizontally (when put together with the wonky LG 5k2k monitor results).
They may have a 6016 width limit (the normal resolution of the XDR) so the max HiDPI resolution is 3008. 3200 HiDPI requires the limit to be increased up to 6400. I wonder if this can be done with a software patch (lilu.kext for M1 Macs? - There are still some things Lilu can't do in Big Sur on Intel Macs).

Yeah, that's what I'm going to have to wait for. I ended up cancelling my air order as the available resolution on the LG 5K2K was too low in HDPI but too small in native. I have a 5K ultra fine as well and would drop to one monitor, but this was a step too far, even for the power and silence of the M1. Looks like I'm going to have to wait for a patch, or the 14" to come out!

So, for me as an M1 user atm (MBP 16gb awaited but using MBA 8Gb 8 core GPU variant) is the message I see here to wait until they sort their act out or bring out something else ?

I don’t see anything being released soon. Could be a few years if at all, no one knows.

There are a few quirks with the M1 and this monitor but it’s manageable. Such a lovely screen and a pleasure to use, the bugs will be addressed soon I’m certain.

Depends on how high of a virtual resolution you want! If you're happy maxing out @ 2880x1620 then the Ultrafine seems like a good choice (barring the image retention issues which maybe only affected the early ones like mine?). Otherwise yeah it seems best to wait.

I ordered a Macbook Air M1 to use with my Ultrafine 5K, but I'm glad I saw this thread so I could cancel the order for now. I'm gonna wait and see if they fix the sleep and resolution bugs in the M1 or if it will work better with the upcoming 16 inch revision.

I'm not even sure if I can expect Apple to do something about it since it's a monitor from 2016 and it might also be LG's problem not Apple's?

Been pretty happy with my LG 5K. Even works great on my Windows PC running an RTX 3080. 5K Windows gaming is craziness!

How do you connect from your windows PC?
He could be doing 4K with a DisplayPort to USB-C cable or an onboard Thunderbolt controller that has one DisplayPort input.
Or he could be doing 5K from a Thunderbolt 3 add-in card that has two DisplayPort inputs.
A Thunderbolt connection or USB-C connection that includes USB 2.0 is required to use the USB features of the display (such as audio or camera or USB ports). In that case, Boot Camp drivers can be installed for brightness control.

Yes. TitanRidge Thunderbolt 3 card.

Couldn’t be easier to set up: The TB3 card has 2x miniDP ports and 2x TB3 ports. Connect the included two short miniDP-to-DP cables from the TB3 card to the GPU. And then one TB3 cable from the TB3 port on the TB3 card to the LG display’s input.

Works a treat. And yes, full 5K. Not 4K.

i went for this in the end as an interim as I don't want hassle with my M1 not seeing 5K ... so spent £399 on this 4K monitor ... not from Amazon though. V happy with image for stuff in LRC.

The UltraFine 5K is not a big volume seller for LG, and Apple is one of the few places left to buy it, but it works well with the M1 MacBooks. It was Apple's "officially sanctioned" high-end monitor before they introduced the XDR, and is still the same panel they use in the 5K iMacs.

Can people reassure me this 5K isn’t going to break my heart in the next few years? I like what it offers but for the price and the 1 year warranty it’s making me nervous.
